Yellow Jacket SUPERNEST! AMISH House INFESTED | Wasp Nest Removals!

September 27, 2022 - Here it is, an AMISH Yellow Jacket SUPERNEST! This nest was the largest sized nest I removed in 2022! Over 8,000 yellow jackets in this nest and its girth was around 5 feet! My Amish client called me to come remove a couple nests from different parts of his house, and this was one of them! He knew there was a nest in that cubby last year but let it go to die in the winter, but didnt realize that the colony could reignite the following spring and continue growing the nest! He knows now and has my number just in case!
September 28, 2022, I dissect this nest and feed the larvae and pupating adult wasps to my chickens, Emus, Rhea, and Squirrel! December 20, 2022 I take the old comb and mass of envelope outside and show just how poorly a DRY old nest BURNS! Cant imagine how poorly a damp active nest would burn!

Burning the nest at the end was very neat to watch. As someone who works in fire safety it’s crazy to think the house could have burnt down faster than a “paper” nest. Nature is an awesome builder!

I see nature and you raise human knowledge. Thermite would burn the nest extremely fast and easily. I wouldn't recommend it though unless in a controlled environment by professionals.

Hornet King, I've been watching your content for a while and it had helped me get through some hard times. I had my baby 2 weeks ago exactly and he has been in the NICU ever since. Had a rough start, but is doing much better. I am going crazy now at this point in the process wanting him home. We were all hoping for a Christmas eve/Christmas discharge but I don't foresee that happening. Your videos have really helped me find my center and cope during this EXTREMELY difficult time in my life. I love your sweet pet voice and I love your chickens and ratites. With love from South Jersey. Maybe one day when I'm up in Amish Country enjoying the peace I will run into ya. God bless and Merry Christmas.

I'm always impressed and sort of baffled by how they build those structures between the layers of comb to hold them apart from each other. This supernest seemed to have even more than usual. I know it's just their instinct but it still suggests a kind of intelligence that amazes me. Thanks as always, Brett. Your videos are awesome.

Your relationships with your animals are endearing. The Hornet Queen is royalty for sure. My favorite species of yellowjacket :D i love how docile they are, i let them sit on my face and scoop them up away from kids, and they just let me handle them with no fuss. Theyre such darlings ^^ its so unfortunate they built their nest where they did, i imagine theyd be super useful to these amish folk if they had built their nest in a tree a bit away from their home! I can't believe how much Rhea has grown so quickly. The nest burned better than I thought it would. I didn't expect to see those flames at all. After all that material has been chewed up and spit out and all the wood that would normally burn has had the goodness(for want of a better word) taken out of it.

My late grandfather tried to burn a hornet’s nest out of one of his maple trees by the cow pasture when I was a teenager. He only succeeded in burning off not just the outer shell of the nest, but also the leaves on the entire maple tree too! (For the record, it was a sapling he had planted several years prior). That story became a family legend afterwards!

This was super interesting! Never would have thought that something so flammable looking was so resilient! Do you think that a lack of air movement inside the nest has anything to do with the slow smolder? It seems to burn better once you expose the nest to open air. Thanks for making such cool content!
@HornetKingOfficial
@HornetKingOfficial 2 жыл бұрын
I think it's a combination of elements. 1 is the layering of envelope (like trying to burne a stack of newspapers). 2 is the comb had waste in it that, though it was organic, was not super combustible. 3, the comb has a higher ignition temp, so unless you're throwing it onto a hot fire, trying to ignite it with a flame or torch would be pretty slow going.
@nemodious
@nemodious 2 жыл бұрын
Dont forget wax melts, not burns. Those combs are very waxy. Perhaps some of the envelope is wax as well? Its a great evolutionary defense. Think forest fires!

When you mentioned trying to burn the nest, my first thought was, "But isn't that stuff more mud than paper? I'm not sure that's gonna work as well as people think. I mean, one of the best ways to put fire out if you don't have water nearby is to chuck sand or mud on it." Glad to see you were bringing it up to make a point. And on behalf of everyone who wanted to see you try anyways, "Thank you for trying anyways." ;) There's a reason some people like beeswax candles. While it takes more heat to get one of those candles going, it also takes much longer for the candle to run out, because beeswax melts so slowly.
@HornetKingOfficial
@HornetKingOfficial 2 жыл бұрын
No mud. Yellow jacket and Hornets nests are made from wood cellulose mixed with their saliva secretion that dries and solidifies into a paper material. But the main component is wood cellulose fibers. No mud. You're thinking of mud daubers.
@1WolfFan
@1WolfFan 2 жыл бұрын
@@HornetKingOfficial Wow. Thank you for the concise answer, and I appreciate the quick explanation too. You're right that was what I was thinking of. Either way, I didn't personally think that stuff would go up very easily. Seems like that would be a good thing for me to know, since I deal with fire on a regular basis with the Burn Crew I work with. We've yet to have a problem with underground nests when we do our work, and I've always wondered why. Of course we haven't, THOSE normally WOULD be mud-style nests, and would likely not even smoulder. It all makes sense now. I always love learning new things. There's just so much cool stuff out there. And people wouldn't even give some things a second thought, unless they personally worked with it, or knew someone who did. Like bee and wasps, or culverts, or burn crews, or bird watchers or... *laughs* well, you get the point.

What do you plan on doing with the big birds? You sure do love your animals! Have a Merry Christmas. 🎄🎁I can't wait to see your next video!

Thank you for explaining the concept of a supernest. When I initially saw the size of the nest, I thought it was like those Alabama nests. I'm happy we don't have those here in these middle Atlantic states.

@@HornetKingOfficial Sounds like either New Order or Beachy Amish. Those groups allow electricity in the homes.

@dragondancer1814 No. Lanaster County PA. Depending on the church, and if they have a home business (which this client did) they are permitted electricity use.

Oof, the bugs don't bother me too much tbh (get a bee suit on and you're fine, mostly) but 100+ degree heat would not have agreed with me lol. Of course right now we're having the opposite problem in the midwestern US. Going into work this morning it must've been -30F, I had my glove off for not even 5 minutes and the frostbite was already starting to set in! (My fingers are fine now, thankfully). I'm too Minnesotan for working in hot weather, I'd have passed out before long in that crawlspace, but give me some thermal socks, good boots, and layer me up in 4 sweaters and I'll be just fine working in a blizzard! Hope y'all are staying warm and safe this time of year 👍

Some great info in the beginning, @2:20 re these German Yellow Jacket wasps, species: Vespula germanica anthic... details @3:05 their behavior individually & their behavior as a colony. Freaking HUMUNGOUS nest in an Amish attic space (evacuated 9.29.2022), attached to fiberglass insulation, over soffit. Nest was at least 2 seasons-worth, with the previous year's combs no longer used at all; dead & abandoned, but the current year's active combs built/continued onto the side of that structure. These Vespula germanica anthic tend to be less aggressive, but build bigger nests. Great video... very educational. [10.15.2024]

That really made me laugh, too! I guess I haven’t smelled enough mice in my lifetime to know what they smell like! When I was married to my second husband we raised sheep and dairy goats, so I saw plenty of mice..even rats occasionally. I guess I lack the ability to detect their smell! 😂

Hey Bret, as usual, your content is one of my most anticipated content in any given week. I have a crazy suggestion for next year's relocation. Could you printout your own comb patty and attach it to the relocated nest? Will the queen agree to use it? What happens if you use transparent material, can we see the larvae developing into adults? What happens if you introduce queen-sized cells early in the season. I know it's crazy, but wanted to get your take on it.

Thanks so much! I have tried transplanting pupae into transparent cells to develope, but they are so delicate, they die soon after transfer. I don't think the queen would lay eggs in a donor comb.
