Apollo was never the bad guy. He was a Champion, and he had a lot of pride and cockiness. His pride wouldn't let him let the first fight go, and ultimately led to his downfall. That being said, I think Apollo was in his best fighting shape in the 2nd one

In his best fighting shape of the series, yeah, for sure. The only reason Apollo's chin failed him is because he was getting older and past his prime. If it were a Creed from even two years prior and he took it seriously, he wouldn't have suffered the knockout.

Im not sure someone comment on Paulie (Burt Young) but he was actually a real boxer. "Young served a tour of duty in the United States Marine Corps from 1957 to 1959. While in the Marine Corps, he won 32 of 34 boxing bouts. He later became a professional boxer and compiled a 17-0 record under three aliases. His manager was Cus D'Amato."

Rocky's strategy during the second fight is based on the famous Muhammed Ali vs. George Foreman fight in the 70's. Much like Rocky, Ali was an older, former champ, seeking to reclaim the Heavyweight title from a younger, reigning champ. In what is now called a "rope-a-dope", Ali let Foreman wear himself out from punching (usually by leaning against the ropes so that they would absorb the force of the blows), and then, once Foreman was too tired to fight back, Ali unleashed a devastating counter-attack and won by a knockout.
@RichV20

Foreman could destroy you with one punch, which was Clubbers main strength. Rocky's only chance, like Ali, was to wear him out and take away the energy from his deadly blow.

Fun fact: Clubber's lurid remarks towards Adrian wasn't scripted but Stallone decided to leave it in because it gives the character a more despicable taste. And according to Mr. T, during the premier he brought his mom to watch it so when that scene came on, she turned to him and angrily said "I didn't raise you to talk to a lady like that!" He tried to explain to his mom that it's a movie and he was just acting the character but she stormed out of the theatre.

Even though you're struggling to find the words, you're exactly right: Rocky and Rocky II are wonderful, character-driven sports dramas about an underdog, while Rocky III and Rocky IV are wonderful (in their own way) 80s action movies about a champion with almost a comic book quality to the heroes and villains.

One dimenional is another way of describing Clubber Lang... Originally Stallone wanted to score Rocky III to "Another Bites the Dust" by Queen. Awesome reaction! I was very impressed. This was my favorite Rocky flick because I too fought Mr. T (real name Lawrence Tureaud) back in 1980 when I was on an NBC Sports TV show called "America's Toughest Bouncer." It took place in Chicago (T's home town). He won the competition, but he and I hung out together, and I was his sparring partner. That's how he got this role as Clubber Lang. Sylvester Stallone was watching the show when it aired in August 1980..He was searching for that character, and T. was just what he was looking for. Anyway, once again thank you, I really enjoyed your review. You don't sit there and yack all through the movie like so many others. I was surprised to see "movies with mom" You don't look old enough for kids. Looking forward to your next reaction...Thanks again!

A lot of Mr T lunchboxes were carried by Generation X in the 1980's! I always heard, that in real life, Mr T was a good and righteous man. Hope, that you are doing well and thanks for commenting, so that we might have a little more insight into Mr T, a beloved 1980's icon!

For those interested: Not only was Clubber the first "Villain", he is symbolically "the beast". Not a character, but the dark side of Rocky's own self, his Fear incarnate, which he has to overcome. That's why Clubber lacks "character". He's a symbol. The whole Rocky franchise is very symbolic. Rocky is Jesus: From the opening shot of the first film, we see the face of Jesus. And, everything thereafter, the whole Rocky saga, is Rocky suffering for the benefit of others. Rocky takes a beating worthy of crucifixion and in doing so elevates everyone else around him. Sly's brother, Frank, is a Brother: Freemason. Their mother is into spirits and crystals and such (and promoting ladies pro-wrestling, hence the Hogan/Thunderlips segment). The Rocky journey is always based on esoteric and symbolic traditions: For example, the ring is always the alchemical color scheme: Black, White, Red, Gold. The colors of the Lodge. Of Transformation. Great movies, in and of themselves, but there's even more to 'em few have ever noticed.

I think with the first two films, those films did a good job of going out of its way to show that Apollo Creed may be the antagonist, but he’s not the “villain”. Even in the second one where he’s calling Rocky out in public, they even show a scene where he’s talking to his PR team and them warning him this will make him look like that bad guy to the public. But you understood where that decision came from, you see how the near loss affected his pride in a way that’s not that dissimilar to what Rocky went through in this movie. With this movie, I think they wanted to have an antagonist that is more a straight up force of nature. It’s not important to know his background and deeper motivations as his purpose in the film is to not understand him, but to fear him, to dislike him. To want to see desperately Rocky get over his own fear (which the way the film portrays it here is really honestly straight up PTSD from the beating). You want to see him conquer and beat Clubber Lang more passionately because he’s such a bad guy. That said, I think for what the role asked for, Mr. T did an amazing job. His toughness exudes on screen and feels genuine. He doesn’t feel like a fake tough guy, a Hollywood actor trying to convince you he’s tough, he feels genuinely scary. And he also has so much amazing quotables in this film.

I think the first two Rocky movies were more grounded, and the third was more of a stylized movie, but what keeps Rocky III from being forgettable is the performances. This, in my opinion, is Stallone at his absolute peak. Mickey's death, on paper, is a pretty typical and not all that special; the hero's mentor dying isn't uncommon in stories. But it doesn't feel typical at all, and that's because it really feels like you're watching a man lose someone he loved in his arms. It feels real, it feels honest, and THAT'S what makes this movie shine.

In the movie Million Dollar Baby Clint Eastwood explains really well how to hit the speed bag correctly. And if you haven't seen that movie it's really worth watching.

I found Apollo and Lang to be two totally opposite styles....Apollo is a skill boxer, equivilent to a master fencer. Lang is a raw power puncher equal to an axe wielding berserker.

Boxing has no upper limit on the heaviest category. Until the 90's (I think) Heavyweight was the top end, so the weight difference between fighters could be extreme. Now we have Super Heavyweight for the really big fighters, and even then the difference can be quite noticeable. Honestly, the middle categories are now probably the more interesting matches because the weight requirements are so strict. Fighters really have to be in top shape, keeping their weight as close to the line as possible to maximise potential advantage. And the middle brackets are also a good combination of speed and power, you see a lot more footwork and dodging rather then just a slugging match.

I agree with you on Apollo vs. Clubber Lang as an antagonist. You don’t really get to see Clubber’s circumstances or motivations. He’s a one dimensional character.

@@CoastalNomad Because the point of the film was Rocky’s inner struggle. That’s also why the fight was shorter.

New subscriber. The speed bag is actually pretty well explained by Clint Eastwood in the movie Million Dollar Baby, which I'm exploiting your mention of it to recommend. Spoiler alert though, it might make you cry. I uh, got something in my eye when I was watching it... great boxing movie though, since you seem to like those.

Loved it. Trust me, everybody that's on here would watch all the Rocky on repeat every day if we had time. You owe it to yourself to follow the complete progression, Everybody is gonna tell you 5 ids the weakest, it may be. but it's not bad, it's not as good maybe, nut it's just different, and you gotta watch that to get to the final, which Rivals the first 2. We are all looking forward to it.

Here’s an Easter egg you missed during Rocky’s title defenses . Joe Czak his second opponent was first mentioned in the first Rocky as a possible opponent for Apollo Creed. Rocky’s title defenses while “ hand picked “ opponents but they were various top contenders who did not posed a serious threat to him like Clubber Lang . Rocky KO the German champion in his 4th defense . Good fighters but not killers like Lang

You never watched the 1980's WWF? It was a crazy time in Wrestling. Look up Piper's pit episodes and you'll understand better why Hulk Hogan's character was so crazy in this movie.

That's what wrestling is, a show. They are all playing characters. There's the ring persona and there's the real person.
