I love this song, it tells the story of the Bismark pretty well, for your Christmas list you have to include Sabaton's Christmas Truce, it get quite emotional but tells the story of a unique few days in 1914 when The British and Germans came together to celebrate Christmas, many could not return to the fighting afterwards, you have to listen to the whole video as there is a special ending

This metal genre is called Power Metal, but Sabaton has their very own and unique style that is a bit divergent from other power metal bands. Also all their songs are based on real historic events or persons with main focus on war. Not because they are fanatics or something like this, but their lyrics are always respectful and it's their way of contribution and to honor those who fought and died in wars throughout history. To conclude with their closing words in Christmas Truce, "Lest We Forget".

The old boat Capt. is the son of the last Sailor of the Bismarck who passed away before filming. Sabaton also has there very own "Sabaton History Channel" on youtube. For Xmass songs Sabaton's "Christmas Truce" is a must. this is the best way to learn about history. i would add "Swedish Pagans" (vikings) "The Last Stand" (1527 sack of Rome & Swiss guards) to the list to check out.

The "Bismarck" , and his sister ship "Tirpitz", were the 2 largest battleships ever built in Europe (250 meters long, 36 meters wide, and displacing more than 50.000 tones) and they were the pride of the kriegsmarine (Germany's militari navy) during Ww2. The "Bismarck" set sail in May 1941 to reach the Atlantic and destroy merchant convoys, but he was intercepted by the British and during a brief fight, destroyed the former flagship of the British fleet and pride of the Royal Navy, the worldwide famous battlecruiser "Hood", by penetrating her armor and detonating her aft main ammunition magazine and killing all 1400 members of her crew except for 3 men, and heavily damaged the battleship "Prince of Wales". This enraged the prime minister Winston Churcil who ordered all his ships in the Atlantic to abandon their operations and destroy the Bismarck. In total more than 40 ships participated to the hunt, making it the biggest naval hunt in history. Meanwhile Bismarck, who had received a hit during the first battle, was leaking fuel and was trying to reach the French port of Saint Nazaire, in occupied France, for repair. After 3 days of playing cat and mouse with the British, Bismarck was attacked by airplanes launched from the aircraft carrier "Ark Royal" and hit by a torpedo in the stern, which jammed his rudders during evasive manuvers, meaning that he was forced to sail in circles, just a few miles away from reaching air cover. In the end battleships "King George V" and "Rodney", along side the heavy cruisers "Norfolk" and "Dorsedshire" fought the already doomed battleship and, during the following 90 minutes completely destroyed it. However, despite having all his guns destroyed, and having received more than 400 hits (out of the 2800 shells that the British had fired at it) his armor was still mostly intact and the ship was still afloat. So the british launched another 4 torpedoes and he disappeared beneath the waves. After inspection of the wreck however it had been discovered that the torpedoes did no significant damage thanks to the battleship's excellent armor, and that Bismarck had been scuttled by his crew (although it should be noted that many historians believe that it would have eventually sunk due to the damage received). Of the 2200 men that served on it, only 114 survived. The old man seen in the video is the son of the last survivor, who died in 2018, 1 year before this song was released

The transition from hard rock to the softer side of metal is ofcourse blurred but as you listen to more of it you learn to tell the difference by heart. This is a clear metal sound in the power metal subgenre (although the 2 main characteristics of power metal used to be high pitched vocals and fast guitar riffs, now its more about how big and energetic the sound is)
@alancarter412 жыл бұрын
Sabaton covers themes of the sacrifice, heroism, and honor show by individuals and groups during the horror and chaos of war. They do not glorify war or choose sides, just accurately show what happened. One of the founders, bassist Pär Sundström said in an interview: "I don't think Sabaton can only be categorized as power metal, as the two main attributes of power metal are high pitched vocals and fantasy lyrics and Sabaton have neither of those. We simply play our version of heavy metal-what heavy metal is to us. Their rabbit hole is deep and emotional. And always watch Sabaton videos to the end, there is often interesting information or twists. Enjoy your metal journey, we will enjoy the ride with you.

Yes, to echo what many others are saying, you will really be glad you did if you choose Sabaton's "Christmas Truce" for your Christmas list. Please, for that one, do the "Official Vid," not the live show. The official vid is like a big-budget mini-movie and is very, very impactful for the first impression. You may want to keep a box of tissues handy for tears. That's the one with the "easter egg" at the end. You have to let the credits roll while enjoying the vocal aria. Read the credits to find the Easter egg.

In addition to Christmas Truce from Sabaton, check out "No Bullets Fly" from Sabaton. Even though it is not technically Christmas related, the event the song is based on takes place on December 20th, 1943, and one man gives the gift of life to his enemies. You MUST watch the collaboration video with Sabaton and Yarn Hub, because Yarn Hub tells the story and provides the animation, and Sabaton sings the song. If you are at all emotional, you might need a tissue for this song.

Valhallaluja by Nanowar of Steel is my favourite Christmas song. Bismarck is one of my favourite Sabaton songs, one both my kids loved basically since birth too. A special place in my heart I believe the difference between rock and metal is the intensity of feeling the song generates. Of course it all depends on the person. Sabaton is considered "power metal", a genre basically for giving fans an uplifting feeling. Sabaton do cover wars from every perspective as they're not political but love history.

You hit the nail on the head that the battleship Bismarck, was named for Otto Von Bismarck. Bismarck also had a brother ship named Tirpitz, though his story is up in the fjords of Norway for the most part, as he was constantly bombed by the Royal Air Force. Bismarck was built for firepower and speed, and his main task was to raid the merchant lanes and stop war supplies from the US/Canada going to Britain. As you can imagine, this was a major threat for Britain, so once Bismarck was active, the Brits kept tabs on his movements. At the start of the video with the radio chatter, you hear the line "...blew up the mighty Battlecruiser Hood." Hood was the flagship for the Royal Navy at the time. The first major engagement Bismarck, and the escorting heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen, underwent was against HMS Hood and HMS King George V. The engagement only lasted four minutes, as Bismarck struck a lucky hit into Hood's ammunition storage, and detonated the ship. The force of the blast was so powerful, that not only was Hood broken in half, but the front half continued to sail on pure momentum alone before sinking. HMS King George V retreated with some damage of his own sustained from the engagement. After this devastating loss, the British high command ordered pretty much whoever/whatever was available to sink the Bismarck. This included: Two aircraft carriers, a seven destroyers, two battleships, two heavy cruisers and one light cruiser. Torpedo bombers from HMS Ark Royal, as we saw in the music video, managed to cripple the Bismarck with a single torpedo. The torpedo jammed the rudders into the central propeller, and he could only sail in circles, leaving Bismarck easy prey for the approaching big guns of HMS Rodney and HMS King George V. So needless to say, it was a mission to not only stop Bismarck, but kind of get some revenge for what happened to Hood. The scene during the guitar solo was Bismarck's second, and final, engagement against the Royal Navy. There's a semi-unknown story about a Polish crewed destroyer called the Piorun that charged the Bismarck the night before the final engagement and fought it with everything they had, including flashing "I am a Pole, three salvos for the Kingdom of Poland" over and over with their signal light. The KZbinr LazerPig does a great video about this little story. His comedy is a bit dry, but it's enjoyable nonetheless. Sorry for the length of the comment, I really like telling stories lol

If you want more from Sabaton, they have many great songs about persons and events, The animated STORY videos of either "night witches" or "no bullets fly" are great, you will have a brief introduction to the history behind the song and some interesting animation of the action. then you have heartbreaking lyrics like "To hell and back" and "En livstid i krig". To hell and back is about PTSD and drug addiction that returning soldiers suffer. En livstid i krig is about the thoughts and feelings of a Swedish soldier in the 30 years war, but feelings and thoughts in the lyrics would be valid for most soldiers in any time period anywhere. epic videos would be steel commander you just saw Bismark Christmas truce then we have live performances. Well it is very complicated to explain the differences between Hard Rock and Heavy Metal and mostly of time is more feeling than other thing. Heavy Metal has a strong presence if the drums and a huge work in guitars, many times in galloping style and huge solos or duets with all guitarists, the sound are normaly louder and distorced too. Normaly the vocals are much more vigorous. Hard Rock normally has a much more perceptible influence of blues, very complex guitar solos and high and raspy vocals. The guitar riffs are much more generous and bass is not too high. It is import to say that metal has nowadays a huge number of subgenres like nu metal, death metal, power metal, glam metal, folk metal, black metal, speedy metal, industrial metal, symphonic metal, thrash metal and many others. Another curiosity thing is that mostly time, in great part of metal bands, the metal musicians are truly masters of their instruments in a much higher level that in another genres. About Xmas songs, I agree, Christimas Truce of Sabaton could be part in your december list. I also like Ramones (Punk Rock band) so much so I also recommend their song "Merry Christimas (I Don't Want To Fight Tonight)" (kzbin.info/www/bejne/gXrLenV8hdmhpcU). Another good option certainly is a classical from AC/DC, Mistress For Christimas (kzbin.info/www/bejne/hH2vg2SOhq9seNk).

@MommaTaunT: You are correct about Bismarck being an important historical figure. Otto von Bismarck, I believe, established the Weimar Republic in 1870. _KMS Bismarck_ was a Nazi warship, a battleship, built by the funny little Austrian man who became the German Chancellor in 1932 (KZbin doesn't like people who mention his name; his initials are A. H.) The _Bismarck,_ the only ship I'm aware of ever called a 'he', was the flagship of the German Navy, when he was sunk in 1940. _HMS Rodney,_ of British Royal Navy, after _Bismarck_ sank _HMS Hood,_ was one of the 16 Allied ships sent to sink _Bismarck._ _Rodney_ ended up firing over 4500 tons of shells, and when it was apparent that _Bismarck_ was sinking, had to be ordered to stop firing. From evidence gathered since _Bismarck's_ sinking in 1940, we now know that the Germans scuttled him, rather than let him be captured. In the video, the man who the band had gone to see was the grandson of the last survivor of Bismarck's sinking, who passed away very close to the release of this video (I think it was a year prior to the video, but could be wrong about this). The compass you see in the video was what contained the Bismarck's final coordinates. As for Christmas songs, I highly recommend Christmas Truce, a tragically haunting song about the "Christmas Truce" of World War I, also known as "The Great War." Two other songs by Sabaton are a collaboration between the band and a KZbin channel called YarnHub: The first is "No Bullets Fly," about the events of 20 December 1943; and the other song is "Night Witches," about the Russian Air Force's all-women 588th Night Bombing Regiment. Sadly, many Second World War veterans are passing away more and more. The last survivor of _Bismarck's_ sinking passed away in 2018 or 2019. On a personal note, it's why I think that no matter what, we need to remember the stories of those who fought in past wars, if only to never forget, so history is never repeated.

Thank you … and you are so right. We should never forget and it hurts so much to see some countries in war again … like they never learn 😔

@@MommaTaunT : I just realized an error I made, in my comment: _HMS Rodney_ didn't fire 4500 _tons_ of shells, just 4500 shells. _Rodney_ literally fired shells continuously for over 3 hours after _Bismarck_ was engaged by the Royal Navy, and as I said, had to be ordered to cease firing after it was apparent that _Bismarck_ was sinking.

Big Easter egg. The watch that the captain of the boat they were performing on was given to him by the captain of the Bismarck. As Bismarck is sinking it's captain gives his watch to a young sailor. The young sailor is later rescued. The captain of the boat is an old man but he has that watch. He was the young sailor aboard Bismarck.

The nice thing about this video is that it condenses the one week (or so) history of the battleship Bismarck rather accurately. From the HMS Hood to the Swordfish torpedo attack that smashed the Bismarck's rudder to the Royal Navy catching him. However, the pocket watch is a fiction as far as I can tell.

I'll make the same suggestion I always make, ballad of Bull might be their most unique song. It's certainly my favourite for the content and the style. Other great songs winged hussars, wolfpack, white death. Sabaton in terms of genre are really just heavy metal. That's what they refer to themselves as and it's a double entendre since a lot of their songs are about the heavy metal of the industrialised engines of warfare, so it seems fitting.

So sabaton is a "story telling" metal band. Telling stories of war, from different time periods and even different perspectives. They don't really push an agenda like politics or anything, they just tell the stories and let us make of it what we will. Making them one of the more talented and unique bands out there. I love basically every song they've put out. Its always nice seeing other people give it a try, even if they don't like it. As for this song, its about a world war 2 super battleship, one of the largest battleships EVER produced, and cutting edge technology for the time. With guns and armor that'd make it a monster. It was put on a course to go to the alantic and begin raiding the convoys. The subs were already starting, and the bismark could really do some damage. Unfortunately it was spotted by a spy who secretly informed the british. Who instantly began looking for it. This would lead to a show down between I believe 2 cruisers and the battleship hood on british side, and 1 cruiser and the Bismark for the germans. Bismark would score some devastating hits on both ships, outright sinking the royal navy's flagship, the hood. Which triggered the Royal navy to send anything they could. Eventually aircraft carriers would terrorize the hood, and after massive pounding by multiple royal navy battleships, air attacks with topedos, and the kitchen sink, the bismark went down. Taking the majority of its 2000 men with it. Ironically enough, for all the money, resources, and tech they used, it'd be the submarine that'd be germany's most effective weapon in the alantic. Also, Bismark was basically the person that unified and expanded the german empire. Even beating the french up to finish unification under prussia. Which set the table for world war 1. Sabaton inspires you to learn the history.

Welcome to the rabbit-hole that are the songs of Sabaton (much like Nightwish, but in a slithly different way). Enjoy your journey. As for recommendations, i saw you already did Christmas Truce and discovered the easter-egg in there (Floor). Bismarck has no easter-egg per say, but instead the dedication at the end. Videos that do, however, are the animated story videos for the Sabaton songs "No Bullets Fly", Night Witches", The Red Baron, and "Lady of the Dark" - although in case of the latter three those easter-eggs are 'just' little nuggets of historical knowledge. The easter-egg in No Bullets Fly does, however, more than make up for that. Tissues are STRONGLY recommended for it though.

Since you asked the difference between Metal and Hard Rock. The two genres blur at times, in fact, for a lot of the older Metal Bands they would sometimes be labeled as Hard Rock because that was the recognized genre at the time. AC/DC is a good example of what I mean on that. The thing is that Metal is in a way, a permutation of Rock, it has the same roots. Much like how Rock was at times similar to Rock & Roll, and Rock & Roll having origins in Blues and Jazz. The main thing that makes Metal, for me at least. Is that the lead guitar has a bigger harmonic emphasis on the song compared to the genres before. That's not to say the other instruments aren't important, in fact a lot of metal songs would be boring (in my opinion) if you took everything else out. There are some methods and tricks that are generally considered metal-only by some, but that's not the important point imo. The bigger point, at least when I'm appreciating music, is actually how Metal is as a genre generally quite happy to both experiment, and also look on really old techniques for inspiration.

You should totally do more of Sabaton! I would recommend "Christmas Truce" for December. I would also recommend one of their latest songs "Father". Down the line, it would be interesting to see you react to the Carolus Rex album songs which are all about Sweden's Era of Great Power. The songs on the album are both in Swedish and English, and the lyrics actually differ on most of the songs, the Swedish versions are more personal, whereas the English versions are more of the perspective of someone outside looking in. There are translated lyric videos by Piscator for the Swedish version, if you are interested in doing the Carolus Rex album. Sabaton is a Swedish band, and all of their songs are about real historical events, people and groups in war. They have a second channel "Sabaton History" where they go into the history of the songs they make. You do not need to be worried about copyright when it comes to Sabaton. They are pretty chill about it when it comes to their music and their history channel. Keep up the good work!
