Mom Sues School Over Daughter’s Secret Gender Transition

When Maine mom Amber Lavigne found out that her 13-year-old daughter’s public school had kept the child’s “gender transition” a secret and encouraged the middle schooler not to tell her parents, Amber demanded answers. But officials refused to engage in open dialogue, so the Goldwater Institute filed a federal lawsuit on Amber’s behalf against the Great Salt Bay Community School Board for violating her constitutionally protected parental rights. Amber’s parental rights were violated. This is her story.

Honestly, as a teacher, I feel like schools shouldn't even be put in the position to have to address these kinds of issues with kids. At the end of the day, the school has to keep kids safe, and unfortunately, many parents are not safe to be around once a child expresses any gender or sexuality issues. Parents should be the first people that a child comes to when they have questions or issues about this, but many parents are not supportive and can even be abusive. One of our students was brutally murdered by their own father in a domestic violence situation, so that gives you an idea of how ugly it can get when parents and kids can't get along. That kind of violence and animosity puts the school in a really bad position when they have to decide how much to tell parents for fear of what will happen to the child if they do say something. Schools are mandatory reporters, but that isn't always enough to stop a tragedy like the one that happened to our student. My advice to any parent who doesn't want to end up blindsided by something like this: Be that safe space for your kids. Approach the situation with an open mind and a willingness to compromise. Don't be so stubborn and angry that your kid and the school stop including you in the conversation.

Not agreeing to comply with your child transitioning is what parents have to worry about. No parent who has strong values and morals will support that decision. Being angry is not the problem! Not being supportive is the problem.

@@risingspirit2884 I don't even think it needs to be as extreme as agreeing to comply. Parents should just be open-minded; maybe let their child try new clothing or a new haircut, perhaps let them experiment with going by a new name, or even just be willing to let your kid see a therapist who has experience with this particular issue. Many therapists can serve as mediators and help create solutions in situations where parents and kids can't come to an agreement. I'm not trans, but my mom was someone with strong morals and values, and it ended up completely ruining our relationship when she refused to compromise, so I just lied and did what I wanted behind her back anyway. As a parent and teacher, I honestly can't understand why anyone would put their morals and value ahead of their relationship with their child. I certainly don't want that kind of relationship with my child. Truthfully, if my mom had been willing to compromise on a few things, I think our relationship would have turned out quite differently.

If you haven't raised kids then get a reality check. Yes there are transgender kids, but this is not a child who showed any indication prior to this incident with the school. Yes, schools go behind parents backs all the time "for the good of the child" this shit happened to me with my child's school, although it wasn't over transgender. My child was having a hard time with his father and I separating. He was seeing a counselor outside of the school, but the school counselor didn't even contact my son's counselor, instead called me at 9pm at night on a Friday night and said my son was suicidal and I needed to institutionalize him immediately. I contacted his counselor and between the counselor and I decided he wasn't suicidal . Response was the school called DCYF and said I was negligent. I pulled all my kids from the school and paid for private Christian school.
