Vet here - it can be worthwhile to keep her diaper area shaved down to a zero blade. This can make it easy to wipe the area and keep it clean. Many dogs can live long and happy lives with incontinence, it’s not a reason to put a dog down and my hats off to the owners for making this decision.

Can confirm. My eldest is deaf, and she screams a lot. For reasons that I would argue don't warrant screaming (breakfast is coming, breakfast isn't quite fast enough, there's a squirrel outside, the other dog is running around, I've put her leash and harness on, you name it) and her shrill shrieking does not sound like an Aussie. We've had to get used to the sounds and get good at picking out what scream means "you stepped on my paw" and what means "yay, food!"

I think I read somewhere that it has something to do with pack communication for sled dogs. Because they can't use body language hauling along at top speed. Obviously this they aren't all working dogs now, but as an active choice in their selection of breeding to have "vocal" dogs that talked to each other a lot. 😅

We had her x-rayed while she was being spayed. My fear was she’d been injured at some point. It turned out she had a congenital defect in the last bone of her spine that compressed on the nerves to her legs and sphincter. She was diagnosed with rear-leg ataxia and despite the incontinence and wobbly gait, she lived and was loved for 11 years. I miss that little girl daily.

A good option for incontinent dogs is a foaming shampoo that is meant to be used on a dry coat. You rub it in, let sit for a few minutes and towel off. I used it on my dog when he was incontinent for a month after surgery and it really helped keep him clean and free of urine scalding. You want to make sure the area gets fully dry afterwards before using a diaper as well. Air circulation is important for healthy skin I believe the one I used was bohdi dry foaming shampoo, lightly scented and coconut oil based. Formulated for dogs.

We use a dry foaming shampoo for our older guy. He's 16.5 years old and doesn't have the best bladder control (bowel too for that matter), so he'll often just have an accident while lying in his bed. So in between actual baths, we'll use a foaming one to keep him relatively clean and not smelling bad.

My Husky was exactly like this, lived until 17 years old. Same fur color and pattern, except she had more of the wolf/raccoon mask under her eyes. Same blue right eye, brown left eye. In her later years she became deaf, developed dementia, some blindness, and at the end incontinence and hind leg weakness. In the morning we would find blocks of her poo on the floor (at least it was dry), but I work in healthcare so it doesn't phase me and it was during COVID so we had gloves and wipes anyways. She was sweet and really perfect for us, in her earlier years she was very active and she was actually a very quiet husky. I wished she would talk to us more, but she only did so when she was 1) hungry or 2) needed to go out to pee. So watching other Huskies talk is kind of a catharsis for me. It's still a matter of professionalism. I, for one, respect that she can show a lot of it while staying true to her values.

God bless the owners for not dropping her off at an animal shelter because she is high maintenance.🙏🏼❤️

It's a good sign that you are focused first on the animal, and second on filming. It's a tough situation, and all we can do is our best. I hope she enjoyed feeling clean and refreshed, even if the back end won't stay that way.

You are so wonderful with all these animals. If I had not been allergic to so many shampoos years ago, I would have been a groomer. I love your videos! 💕💕

Shorty’s owners must love her so much. Caring for an incontinent dog must be so difficult. Bless you for taking such good care of her.
