I highly recommend two small bags. One for labor and delivery, and one for newborn phase. They usually move you after the baby is born, so there's no point unpacking the nursing pillow and the baby clothes etc, just to move all that stuff again.

Bring the baby book and ask them to put their footprint in it for you, they do it all the time and are really good at it. I also had a few copies of my birth plan, researched, realistic, doctor approved, and bullet points. First I figured out what I wanted (see the movie "Business of Being Born") and it was the nurses at the hospital that gave me a list of doctors I could go with and who to avoid at all costs based on what I wanted help with and what I wanted to avoid, they said not to go with the doctors who have MOST of their patients have very false "emergency" c-sections where the doctor LIES. Being that I want/wanted 4+ kids it was more important for me not to have a c-section. I have had four kids with two GREAT doctors. Things like APGAR on chest and to nurse right away was important to me. My doctor knew I wanted more than 3 kids so to avoid c-section and interventions that lead to c-sections at all costs including rare recommends like diation to correct instead of accept typical end of pregancy health issues. I also wanted it clear that I only felt comfortable with gravity assisted or hands and knees (if back laboring) birth and I did push and give birth in squat and not back or even side (at each birth a nurse saw this for the first time and were amazed at how much easier it is for the mother). I didn't even want to be offered an epidural, so they didn't and made sure the nurse that worked with me knew about natural pain relief, although one nurse did dismiss another nurse who didn't get that you don't loudly bug a naturally birthing mother during contraction. Few doctors are trained in how thing happen naturally, and statistically speaking they are not trained in how to assist women in the ways proven to be truly safest and reduce pain. My point is if you want something on your birth plan that starts months before the labor as you find the doctor, and bring copies of that list that day because having the greatest of doctors doesn't matter if you get the wrong nurse, I believe having that list helped me get the right nurses, and even when I got the wrong nurse one of the other nurses saw it and changed places with her. I wasn't difficult, I actually was complimented on being one of the best people to work with, because I was honest, upfront, realistic, and actually prepared and willing to do the hard work on my side to have a safe birth. That included working with a doula, dietitian, and pre-natual fitness instructor. It honestly cost me out of pocket only $500 more per birth and it was worth it. I choose hospital births, had I gone with a mid-wife wanting the same things I would have saved 3,000 each. Even if you're not about to give birth, we all talk to women who give birth, watch, "The Business of Being Born." It's older(ish) now, but much of it still stands and addresses people's concerns that they might have with what I am saying. But my point is not to give birth in my style, if you want your second kid via c-section followed by tubes tied you also can follow the same advice and ask the nurses at the hospital who the best surgeon is for you and to have a list of what you want so no one is bugging you, literally part of a birth plan can be about who you don't want bugging you. : ) Bring your birth plan and baby book.

I love how fun you make these super useful tips! We're prepping for our first baby and I bought one of them pregnancy planner books and we started looking at the hospital bag checklist. My husband was amazed at how much was on the checklist! There was a bag for labor and a separate checklist for a bag for postpartum! Who would have thought! He's like what undies that's it what more could you need? I'll show him this.

Kudos to the charging bank! When I got moved out of recovery to the maternity ward we had the tiniest little stalls (the nurse had to pretty much walk through the next one to check on my IV) and I had one outlet to choose between my IV and the pump the hospital loaned to me and another low grade one on the other side of my bed I could stretch my phone cord from if my husband plugged it in for me. Next time I might bring at least two! I chuckled at the permanent marker! My mom would draw little hearts on our feet (but I don't think she used sharpie). Bring two going-home outfits in case of blowout right before you leave, and make sure there are legs (so the baby can actually ride in a car seat)! I packed a bunch of things to do, but honestly I mostly slept and watched TV, especially when I was in labor. I would recommend a comfortable going-home outfit for the mom (I had the softest, stretchiest PJs my mom gifted to me at the shower) and a hoodie. When I tried walking down to NICU (by myself) it was chilly in the halls and I was glad for the extra covering over the nursing hospital gown.

So the reason they dont let mom's eat during labour is incase of an emergency c-section where you need to be put under. You cant have food or liquid in your stomach when you go under, so you dont accidentally hurl, and aspirate it when you're sedaded. After the baby is out, and you know you arent going to be cut open, you can eat all you want.

It’s in case of a emergency If you need a c-section you shouldn’t eat before surgery due to aspiration which is when you vomit due to anesthetics and it goes back down into your lungs
