Years ago, I was doing a New Year's gig with my band -- private show, somebody had hired us for their house party. I'd been having...just a really sad time for a while, and that night in particular I was missing my husband and wishing I could be with him and my family on that holiday night. Most of the people at the party were family to the guy hosting. So it's late, the show is done, and I'm dragging my gear across a cold, frosty front yard, loading my car. A couple with a small child are also leaving, and the small child stops to gaze at me for a protracted moment. I do my best to ignore and keep working. But then the kid walks away from the parents and up to me, and I kid you not, it's a probably 3-or 4-year-old Cindy Lou Who-looking little blonde girl with these giant blue eyes, and she looks up at me and holds her little arms up and says "Do you need a hug?" I look up at the parents, who give me this barely-perceptible little nod. I get down on one knee and tell her "Yes, honey, I DO need a hug." And she hugs me. Dear reader, it took everything inside of me not to break down sobbing in that moment. It took everything I had to keep my breath from hitching as that pint-sized packet of unconditional love and wonderment did me a human kindness, because I didn't want her to think she'd made me cry, didn't want to have to explain to her that people can cry because they're happy or because their emotions changed so suddenly. I hope it was dark enough that she didn't notice the unshed tears in my eyes when we parted. She trotted back to her parents, to whom I mouthed a silent "Thank you." I will carry that moment, that gesture, with me forever.

When I was going through my divorce 32 years ago, I was broke, alone in a new city, and having trouble with just bills let alone looking forward to anything celebratory for Christmas that year. I got an unsigned Christmas card with some beautiful encouraging words and $50 in cash! Cried big time over that, and have never forgotten it, never did find out who it was. I make sure to spread those fifties around wherever I can now. Sometimes we just need that little spark of kindness and generosity.

First photo - With all the tales of how children/teenagers behave badly these days, it's easy to forget that the vast majority still behave with common decency, let alone with altruism like this - kudos to this boy, and his parents for raising him to be the kind soul that he is. 2:53 - What a great idea. One has to wonder why all eateries don't do this. Then again, I had never thought of it, so I guess most owner don't either, or printers/menu providers for that matter (maybe some campaign from whatever Blind "Society" each Country has (the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) in Britain, for instance) would make owners aware.) 3:06 - I cannot express just how happy this "Post" made me. I really do wish that animal shelters were not needed but, sadly, they are. They do such sterling work, and it must have been so gratifying to them when this happened. 💖 To all of those who achieved something in this video (or those watching!) - Congratulations! Hope your world keeps going in a Wonderful direction. You have shown everyone that striving for something is not only admirable, but achievable. For those who have shown such kindness, love, and respect to their fellow human beings, no matter what place those humans have found themselves in, you make the world just that little bit better, not only for those you helped, but for everyone. You really do restore my faith in humanity. ❤

7:22 My Teenage Bedroom was located in an out building, separate from the main residence and because of this, I was permitted to have My own telephone extension. Whenever I was out and I knew that I absolutely wasn’t going to be Home before curfew, I would phone Home shortly before curfew. And when One of My Parents answered the telephone I would simply say “it’s OK, I’ve got it, it’s for Me” and My Parent would simply hang up, knowing confidently that I was back Home, in My Bedroom (and before curfew). God Bless them both, but neither of them ever caught onto this Deception and if they ever did, they never told Me.

Communication is the secret Would always leave notes for our son. He would do the same for us. Opportunity to say Love You or ❤❤'s, no matter how old he become. Husband was a shift worker, I always made breakfast or brunch in bed for him when he awoke. On "his" special tray with napkins, laid out nicely. Son, even while small would help me. I had a silver and porcelain flower which I would ritchulaly add to the tray, would tell my son to go and get it, out of my buffet, for his Dad, which son loved to do. Now even today, our 45 year old son likes to make people feel special and likes to cook for others.

Fawning? I've seen this a couple of times now, don't people know that the real meaning of fawning is not a good thing?
@just-dlАй бұрын
Nope. Looked it up. I’ve always thought it to be caring, and perhaps a bit over the top. Interesting. Wouldn’t have thought it had a negative connotation.
@SallyMB63567Ай бұрын
@@just-dl Did you look up dissemble at the same time? "Fawning: the act or practice of seeking favour by flattery or a servile way of behaving". In case you need this, too, "Servile: slavishly submissive or obsequious". Caring?
@just-dlАй бұрын
@ I stopped with fawning. There’s a few words that don’t sound (to me) like they mean. Oddly, dissembling I had right. Ambivalent is tough for me. Technically, it’s more like “mixed emotions” (plus and minus) but I associate it with apathetic. I know the difference but it feels wrong to me. As my daughter says, Englishing is hard. 🤣 I’m an amateur word smith, so I like learning new stuff!
@SallyMB63567Ай бұрын
@@just-dl Dissembling is related to lying. Had you looked it up like you said, you would have known what fawning meant, you hadn't looked it up.
@just-dlАй бұрын
@ not sure what you’re on about. No connection to fawning and dissembling in the definition at Webster’s. You might want to check your superiority complex at the door.
