this is what we call a realistic singer "chanteur réaliste" who recounts real life events with all the positive and negative aspects . the lyrics are intense and the music that accompanies it is just incredible and the phrasing of the song is fascinating

I am French, and I wonder if an American can really grasp the incredible tragic depth of the text (even if the translation of the subtitles is rather good). It is both a desperate love song and a social painting of a shattering truth and cruelty. What is fascinating with Brel is that he always wrote his remarkable texts on the border of an illuminated beauty and a terrible horror in the human soul, a bit like a tightrope walker always on the verge of crashing to the ground.

Hello Uncle D, 🌴🌞 As a child, I listened so much to all these incredible songs by the great Jacques in my parents’ car. Even though it wasn’t my generation, I loved his texts and his way of embodying the characters. I think that makes you demanding about art. The great French artists such as Piaf, Brel, Aznavour, Trenet, Ferré, Montand, Lama, etc., shaped the incomparable spirit of French song for the generations of singers who followed: Goldman, Cabrel, Balavoine, Berger, Fabian, etc. Besides, if we watch Lara’s performance for the first time when she sings “Je suis malade” (I’m sick), we say to ourselves, she’s remarkable; no one has ever sung like that before her! Well, that’s not true. It’s just that you don’t know the generations that came before her, lol. We could call it “The school of the French song” or, as we popularly say in France, “The old school.” In any case, thank you for taking the time to listen to all these beautiful titles that enchant the mind. Peace, folks. ☮👈😎

This was a TV recording. You should see his goodbye concert at the Olympia in Paris 1966 or some performances at Knokke. "Fils de", "La valse a mille temps", "Les bourgeois", "Le chanson de Jacky", "Le chanson des vieux amants", "Les flamands", "Mon plat pays", "Jef", "Le moribond" (which was the original of "Seasons in the sun" by Terry Jacks), "Au suivant", "La quete" or "Les bonbons" (hilarious parody). Clips of these can be found on KZbin. His performance, expressiveness, gestures, passion, poertry, music...I have never seen the likes of it again, probably never will.

I don't know how you do it man... I speak 5 languages fluently (you could argue about the fluent part) with french of course but I live in Luxembourg. We have 3 official languages that we learn here (french, german and luxembourgish). I learned english in school (and by myself... school level is never enough) and danish from my two parents (both danish). So I have seen multiple videos of you now and I can say that for an american you are well versed in french (not kidding)... not fluent but it impresses me somehow because (warning !! Stereotype !!) you really look like the american guy that doens't care about the rest of the world and here you are doing all those reaction videos... nice!

Always incredible lyrics with Jacques Brel and an interpretation at the height of his powers. Always topical. I always listen to it with great pleasure and attention.

Thanks to react about Brel with another song than "Amsterdam" or "Ne me quitte pas", which are more or less knowed in English versions but with so bad translations as the provocative style of Brel has always been deleted in the past English covers in the seventies. The most incredible and powerful interpreter who ever was. Masterful. Magistral ! Simplement le plus grand ! Simply the greatest ! Note a mistake obviously in the translation: Et puis ...Il y a Frida qui est belle comme un soleil ( = beautiful as/like a sun and not 'as beautiful as a son' ...) May I advise 'Avec le temps' or 'c'est extra' by Léo Ferré for a next reaction video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/kHmalXpmpt6tr8k kzbin.info/www/bejne/mIfVpp-KqNpliZo Thank you! 👍👏🙏 ~~~~ With time ~~~~ With time... With time, goes... everything goes away One forgets the face and one forgets the voice The heart, when it does not beat anymore, it is not worth going And seek further, you have to let it go and that is fine. With time... With time, goes... everything goes away The other we adored, that we looked for in the rain The other that we guessed at the bend of a glance Between the words, between the lines and under the make-up Of a made-up oath which goes away to make its night With time,... everything fades away With time... With time, goes... everything goes away Even the nicest memories Ah! you got one of those mugs! At the Gallery I rummage through the shelves of death On Saturday evening when tenderness goes away by itself. With time... With time, goes... everything goes away The other whom we believed for a cold, for nothing The other to whom one gave wind and jewels For whom one would have sold one's soul for a few pennies In front of whom one dragged oneself like the dogs drag With time,... everything is fine With time... With time, goes... everything goes away We forget the passions and we forget the voice That would told you the words of the humble people 'Do not come back too late!', above all 'do not catch a cold!'. With time... With time, goes... everything goes away And you feel bleached like a stricken horse And you feel frozen in a bed of chance And one feels alone perhaps but cushy And you feel cheated by the wasted years So really, With time,... one does not love anymore. Léo Ferré (transcript Fabrice)
