C'est une chanson très célèbre dans le répertoire français des années 70. Les paroles, la voix de Daniel Guichard et la musique apportent une émotion incroyable car on se reconnaît tous dans cette histoire. J'ai pu l'entendre lors de l'enterrement d'un de mes oncles et j'ai aussitôt compris que c'était un message de ses deux fils. Grand moment d'émotion.

Hello Dereck, Sorry, I cried while watching this video. I couldn't help myself. I lost my dad 5 years ago and my mom last month. The emotion was too strong. So many images came to mind, it shook me. You are never the same person again after the death of your parents. But well ...Life show must go on. Thanks to the person who asked for this reaction, even though it upset me. I lost my mom quite young almost six years ago and this song is hard on me. Because it's true, when you're young you think you'll have many many years with your parents so you don't acknowledge them enough, you don't spend enough time with them, you don't tell them you love them enough, and you regret it sooner or later. That's why I told to all young people I can talk to about things like that : please say "I love you" to your parents, be with them, enjoy the time you have with them. Toute une partie de ma vie dans cette chanson. 🙂 J'ai connu mon père avec ce fameux par-dessus, le réveil matinal, le monde ouvrier des années 70 à 80 et les conditions de travail d'une autre époque : amiante, limaille de fer, chauffage au charbon de bois, sans protection pour les poumons. Chez nous non plus on ne manquait de rien mais on ne roulait pas sur l'or. Je ne peux l'écouter sans avoir quelques larmes qui montent en repensant à mon père lui aussi parti trop tôt quand je n'étais encore qu'une enfant.🙂

Dammit, just like everyone around, this song gets me every time. Now I'd rather listen to the studio version for one little detail : there's a chord change at the very very end when he says "Papa" that sends you to the moon, which they didn't include in the live version, and it really does add to the storytelling. But then again, the live version is good because you can kind of sense the good intent in this man's whole character. He KNOWS he's got the ultimate tear up song in his hands, but he doesn't overplay it. Everyone and their grandmas whole body clenching, yet ... he's just him, doing what he's been doing for years with the same level of humility. Great parallel with the monotony of the whole "old man' song. And something you cannot hear if you don't speak fluent French but : this man's got an accent. He's got a heavy lower middle class Parisian suburbs (the poor kind of suburbs we got over here in Europe) accent. The story comes from all these little details adding up, and it participates in making it so relatable. The desolate iaccordeon theme clashing against the violins of the singer's true memories and emotion. That's the real deal, a bit of an old fashioned song in every regard, but a whole historical era described through the heart of one guy missing his dad.

The text was written by a female lyricist Michelle Senlis, one year before the death of her father. I mention her gender just to underline from how far the song came. The music was composed by the well known Jean Ferrat. Daniel Guichard was the third singer to record the song, 10 years after Michelle's father death... and the only one to have success. Michelle Senlis claimed the lyrics were changed without her authorisation. Daniel Guichard gives a wonderful interpretation: he made this song so much his own that it touches everybody.

In 1962, Michelle Senlis wrote Mon vieux as a tribute to her father, which Jean Ferrat set to music in 1963. That same year, the song was performed by two singers, Jacques Boyer and Jean-Louis Stain. On 7 November 1963, Michelle Senlis's father died, and she asked that the song no longer be used1. However, in 1974, she agreed to co-write Daniel Guichard's cover version2. Later, she declared that she regretted this gesture, reproaching Daniel Guichard for having performed the song in 1973 with altered lyrics without her agreement, and for the fact that "everyone" had hidden this from her at the time of signing. What's more, following the enormous success of Daniel Guichard's cover version, Michelle Senlis said she had not taken kindly to the "false connection" that journalists had made between Daniel Guichard and the song.

C'est l''une des plus belles chansons Française, peut être meme que d'autres sont ex equo, mais juste derrière ?! tellement elle est immense, grandiose, par son texte, cette réalité qui fait un putain d'écho á ce monde d'aujourd'hui! Le texte est aussi intimiste que cette Mélodie !!! qui est plus qu'approprié, et lá je me dis que la musique, la chanson est ce qu'il y a de plus beau au Monde ! qu'elle percute toutes les générations, que ca nous prend au trip, même qqun qui est né avec une cuillère en argent, la fibre sensible vient nous cueillir au plus profond j'ai envie de dire au firmament.Bien sure grand respect á Mr Guichard qui l'interprète magistralement !!! Ce bijoux fédérateur, colossal est un enseignement d'une richesse inouïe d'intelligence rien que par ce texte, ces?trois minutes…Et ca pousse á la fraternité, l'humanité tellement en danger.

Combien sommes nous dans ce cas? Surement très nombreux, c'est l'histoire de ma vie ,mais "mon vieux" et "ma vieille" avaient une phrase pour çà " oh mon dieu ne laisse pas un père et une mère pleurer un enfant" toute leur vie. Eux qui avaient perdus une soeur ainé que je n"est pas connu. c'est sûr qu'à 15 ans on a pas le ceur assez grand......c'est bien plus tard que l'on s"en rend compte , malheuresement,ainsi va la vie. Passez d'exellentes fêtes de fin d'année,pensez à vos proches présents ou disparus et je vous souhaites une bonne année 2022.
