I remember in Kindergarten, my teacher bought a couple of caterpillars online, as well as food and a cage. I remember every day we would check their progress, and when they started the process of metomorphosis, the entire class (including me) were amazed. Then I think it was a few weeks before school let off, they hatched and on the last day of school we released them. I will never forget that experience!

When I was like 6 I was so captivated by butterflies that my mom got me this little kit thing and it was sent with a little book on how to find and safely handle a monarch caterpillar and what time to look for them. I found one and it came with some milkweed leaves and I let this thing hang in this little expandable habitat with sticks and leaves in it and I would watch this little dude eat leaves. And finally the moment had arrived, I come home to a cocoon. I could hardly contain myself I watched for days waiting for the butterfly to emerge. He did, I released him back into the wild. I don't know why I'm saying all of this. But, it really stuck out to me how nature could be so complex and beautiful. Of course, at that age, I just knew that Nature was pretty and it should be kept that way. My mom did the same thing with Ladybugs and I also once hatched a praying mantis egg sack... except that I did not properly seal the habitat and they all came out and almost completely covered one wall in the house. We got most of them out into the yard safely, though. I always thought that I'd be an entomologist one day. I never really followed that dream. I still love this stuff, though. I hope I can provide the same kind of enjoyment and understanding of the beauty of nature to my son who was just born 5 months ago.

Insects go through the most incredible changes between infancy and adulthood. The pupal stage is particularly amazing. Inside the pupa's shell is goop with DNA. That's it. The larval animal that went into that shell is no more. It dissolved. Essentially, it died. Soon, the goop reorganizes itself into something totally different, and soon after that, the adult insect emerges, looking totally unrecognizable compared to its previous form.

Insects' skin doesn't grow with them as they age like ours does; they have to grow a second layer of skin under their current one and, when they become large enough that their current skin becomes too tight, they shed it through muscular action, kinda like how buff guys can make their clothes explode off of them by flexing. While the new skin is still wet and elastic, they puff themselves up with air before it sclerotizes (hardens) to maximize the amount of growth they can achieve until they have to molt again.

Isn't it kind of sad when people actively make fun of others who are in a state of awe when observing the absolute beauty of nature? It's such a shame that people can have such a low, pitiful state of consciousness that they have to take a shit on other's perspective just to feel better about their own. I don't personally believe in what is by and large called "God" in this world... it just doesn't make sense to me. BUT, if believing in God helps you make sense of the world, helps you to see the beauty of life, or helps make you a better person at all or treat others better, then please please please keep believing in God, the world is a better place with you & your God in it.... THANK YOU for believing in God. And to those who would make fun of these people...I sincerely hope that some day you learn to stop trying to compare dick sizes & grow the fuck up. Literally nobody is impressed by your so called "superior intelligence". You are not adding one iota of positivity to the fabric of life. The Universe looks down on you in shame & pity. You would be wise to learn from the caterpillar here: Go into your cocoon of self-indulgent immaturity, then transform. Emerge into the adult that the Universe would prefer you to become.

The Monarch butterfly is amazing from birth to death. The metamorphosis itself, along with their 4 generations, where the last one makes that great migration. I’m fortunate to live where I see them often throughout the summer. Last year on my back deck, one hatched from its cocoon and flew just a short distance, sat on my knee drying its new wings. What an awesome sight that was to see such a young one so close. And eventually he flew away, now free to explore the sky.

What? Caterpie evolving. Caterpie evolved into a Metapod! What? Metapod evolving. Metapod evolved into butterfree!

I would say the Monarch is more like Scatterbug/Spewpa/Vivillon. But the Viceroy butterfly would be like Caterpie/Metapod/Butterfree though!

One cool thing that people don't realize is that a butterfly is not *inside* a chrysalis, the butterfly *IS* the chrysalis. That pupa is the butterfly's body! If you touch one, it'll squirm and wiggle! As you can see in the video, it does not build the pupa, it molts just as it does when becoming a bigger caterpillar, then it gets it's body in the right shape to develop onto a butterfly. And when it "emerges", it is simply molting again! Another cool thing is how a moth caterpillar will make a firm cocoon out of silk like a spider and THEN it will become a pupa inside. They literally make a little sleeping bag!

Yes... but why on God's green earth do you cut exactly as the butterfly emerges?

+Björn Anders Nilsson It fell out and dropped. I did capture another fully emerging in a later video at kzbin.info/www/bejne/b6jLqJycatB8nsk

That one had a disease. Likely OE. They do not emerge that way when healthy :( They eclose from the bottom.

This could be what humans are supposed to go through is we are not controlled and manipulated --- just naturally transform into what we are going to be --- from the inside out?

How does this video have over 1k dislikes? Do people not realize the beautiful stages the Monarch goes through? I raise them and they never cease to amaze me. The only slight problem I see is it looks like at least 1 has OE. Unless you are raising them inside and bleaching eggs and food, it’s hard to avoid.
