Tom, I was one who commented about the elbow room between competitors but now after seeing it and you saying each guy stands on opposite sides, it makes perfect sense! Great job, can't wait see some video of the event :)

Hey tom, that 4 jaw machine is screaming for a pair of stopwatch clocks with plunger buttons on the top like chess clocks. Also, I agree with others that the legs on it need some kind of bracing to stop the side to side racking. It wiggled alot with just a little bump at 1:00. You could use you logo as a brace if you move it up, and then throw a smaller gusset in each legs top corner.

Another cool video Tom. You're right on about the old NC machines. Up until about 10 or 12 yrs ago the company i worked for had a General Electric NC lathe. It was retro fitted with a computer system but the machine parameters still had to be loaded by tape. What a pain in the ass !! Every time there was a power outage, you had to drag out the box of tapes, and re-load the dam thing. That old girl could still hold a .001" though….if it wasn't too hot. Anyway…..cheers from Canada….Mike.

When I worked at ArcelorMittal in Burns Harbor, IN (used to be Bethlehem Steel), they had an old Farrel roll grinder with a tape reader on in. Still had the "printer" to make new tapes, and there was maybe ONE old timer there who still knew how to program and print them. I always enjoyed seeing it used and maintained. The control cabinets were massive, and had vacuum tubes that you can't even buy anymore. That thing still ran like a champ, and held tolerances better than some of the newer machines. We used it to grind back up rolls for the 5-stand mill, as well as bliss mill (scale breaker) rolls for the pickling line. When I left there, they were in the process of retro-fitting a computer based system onto it. Kind of a shame the old dinosaur wasn't in a museum some where. Nothing like good old American machines.

Wow…small world huh ? When i worked for that company. half of our work was for Dofasco which is now Arcelor Mittal. I would do balancing of back-up rolls, table rolls, all kinds of stuff. I ran a cylindrical grinder for many years making worm shafts, pump shafts, output shafts etc etc. They were a great company to do work for.You are right, those old machines were very robust and built to last.

G'day Tom,I haven't been in your comments for a while, I've been in hospital for 6 months after having a stroke in January that left me paralyzed on the left side. My machining days are regrettably over now, but I see that you're still making interesting videos & I,ll still enjoy watching them. I haven't been near my computer in that time I've been in rehab learning to walk again which is still ongoing and will be for a while yet, It'good to be out now & able to get back online - Pedro...

I think the 4 jaw challenge rig may need some stabilizing trusses to keep it from swinging around so much. Or contestants might be using the pinball tilt technique as a major strategy in the competition.

Hey, Mr. Ox. Thanks for another great video. Is there a trick to grinding 3 flats on a tap so it would sit in drill chuck nicely? I kinda want to do that, but I don't want it to look crooked. I have no machinery available at the moment, only handheld tools and a bench grinder.
@davewood4068 жыл бұрын
With that list of tools... paint the shank of the tap with sharpie. Put the tap in the chuck and tighten. that should put some marks in the sharpie paint. Grind where the marks are.
@oxtoolco8 жыл бұрын
Hi Voron, I ground the flats using a hexagonal collet block or using the deckel So grinder. Thanks for the comment. cheers, Tom
@LambertZero8 жыл бұрын
I guess I'll put a nut on the tap. It's not a collet block, but I guess it is close enough.

Thanks for the videos, have you put your thoughts on press fitting in a video?
@oxtoolco8 жыл бұрын
Hi Nate, I have talked about press fitting in a few places. No one video dedicated to the subject. Its a tricky thing because there are so many situations and examples. The requirements for each are pretty specific so it makes talking about press fits in general terms kind of difficult. Thanks for the comment and video suggestion. Cheers, Tom

You could probably sell that K&T nerd pack on Ebay for $100. Maybe more at the Summer Bash as an auction to go along with the baby bullet. That is, if you care to let it go... A goodly percentage of the people interested in things like that will be there. I wore nerd packs, mostly IAM logo, for about 25 years at work, making it easy to move all the pencil, pen, rule, screwdrivers, and other crap from one shirt to another. One person said "You look like a nerd with that in your pocket." My reply: "I AM a nerd!" Still have some of those old nerd packs, in new condition.

I can imagine that 4 jaw competition bench coming up in year 2116 ebay, or in their version of a second-hand shop, and people wondering, "Ok, WTF was THAT machine used for!" If only they knew what was riding on it! BTW Tom, did you run out of steel for some diagonal bracing? ;)
