Hey Tom. I purchased a 14-40 lathe 4 years ago like the one u have plugged twice. Tore it down straight out of the crate for thorough cleaning, measuring, and setup. Wasn't expecting a lot for price paid. It's had a lot of use and still to this day seriously impressed with how true it is and the tight tolerances it holds. A great smaller second machine for the shop. Excellent machine for the home machinist. And that 2 hp single phase can thro some decent chips

Even though I don't do a lot of metal working (yet) I picked up the metric version of the Black Book. Seems like a very good source of condensed information as everyone is advertising. I'm a software engineer but has found the metal working trade to be facinating because of all you guys that I follow. Thank you for all the interesting videos, keep them coming and I will be watching! :-)

Hey Tom, glad you liked the notebook & the stamp. No need to do anything to prep the moleskine cover. Just line up the stamp, blue tape in place, put some kind of compliant backer on the opposite side of the cover, gently press with your hydraulic press to the desired depth, hold for 20-30 mins so the chipboard in the cover takes a set. Gently is key with your logo and its narrow lines. Best, Tom

My dad, at one time in his life, ran a rock crusher. This did the same thing as the macadamizing hammer, only faster. My first job was a summer stint with the family paving company. An asphalt pavement consists of a subgrade, then a layer of crushed rock, then asphalt (really pea sized rock + asphalt), The crushed rock drains out the water; in Spanish it is called "Macadam Hidraulico" . It was cooked up by a scotsman, Mr. MacAdam. The amount of rock you put in is determined by the load you put on it. We would put 5-10 cm on a driveway, but a road took about 15-25 cm. It is fascinating to me to see how they did it in old times aand that old hammer is a treasure.

Hi Tom, Glad you had a good time at the Summer Bash!! Yes, Adam put one on ya, 36 seconds is quick. I watched most of the live streaming, including the 4 jaw competition at the end. I just got my KBC catalog in the mail and was getting ready to place an order, so that discount code will come in handy. Thanks for all you do teaching us about tools, and equipment, and how to use them. Kevin

Glad to see you are linked up with KBC, Tom. Back in SoCal when I was converting old Boyar -Shultz surface grinders to CNC centerless grinders, we quickly found that KBC could hook us up with new machines that were more rigid than our old B-S machines at a cheaper price than doing complete table and spindle rebuilds. Plus, I didn't have to "de-crust" and paint the new machines that looked like they were raised from the Titanic. LOL. Plus, their customer service is awesome. We once had a new machine that I was converting to CNC that had column issues. We called, and they sent out a millwright to look at it. He said it was bad, and KBC sent out a new machine for us the next day.

I clicked on this specifically because of that hammer! I was trying to explain to someone what that was just the other day! My grandparents called it a knappin' hammer. There was a head to one sat on top of a fence post in the family farm for 50 years or better, then one day Grandma picked it up and brought it in to tell stories about it. My great grandfather used it to bust rock for the railroad bed that went 3 or 4 hundred yards in front of the house. L&N paid a certain amount for a horse drawn wagon load and the locals were happy to provide.

Great to see another meat loaf. Cool hammer Tom. Macadamizing hammers are super rare. Apart from Rock breaking they can be pretty useful for certain operations in custom sheet metal working, sometimes you will see one in an old school sheet metal magicians tool roll. BTW it's not pronounced Mac-a-da-mizing, but rather Mac-Adam-izing. It's named after the Scottish Civil Engineer Mac Adam who perfected a type of crushed rock road base stabilisation method. Keep the great videos coming. cheers

Another vote for the Black Book. It originates from Australia, but they do a US edition, presumably consisting a whole heap of archaic imperial crap you blokes insist on not letting go of. ;) Seriously though, I use my Black Book almost every day in the workshop and it's virtually my only workshop reference. Mine looks like it's had an argument with a paper shredder ... and came out losing! Forget the MH, it's clumsy and has no place in a workshop in my opinion, it's an office only reference. My only gripe with the Black Book is the index is rubbish. KBC were always good people to deal with when I used to travel to LA. Very helpful and were willing to ship to Australia. Enco no longer ships internationally, so hopefully KBC still does. If Paul reads the comments maybe she could confirm that?

Tom Re your mill indicating event. My first instinct would be to move the z closer and use the spindle to eyeball center, but on the videos I've seen no one did that. Did anyone try it, was it forbidden, or would it not be helpful ?

The Engineer's Black Book originates in Australia, and I have had mine for 3 or 4 years. I would refer to it several times a week as a hobbyist, and I think that it is just great. You lucky blokes get it for about half what we pay for it in Australia, Au$45.00 last time I looked, and the fasteners book in the same series was over Au$50.00. I don't have the fasteners book, just don't need it that badly, and as they come shrink wrapped, I haven't been able to look inside, but I can say that you will love the Engineer's Black Book, the oil repellant pages, the spiral binding which doesn't try to close up on you when you place the open book down, the great collection of info are all excellent. Oh the Ausie edition and I presume that the American edition will be the same, has an Aluminium drill sharpening guide, not card.. P.S. Aluminium is not found in North America, but is common in Australia, New Zealand and Europe. It has very similar properties to Aluminum, which you yanks will be familiar with;-)) Thanks Tom for all your most generous sharing of information, and the very community minded attitude you display. Your videos are a real pleasure to watch, and your workmanship superb. Very nice to see all you KZbin Creators having a good time at Stan's, I saw quite a bit of the live feed, and really hope that one day I might be like Bruce and get there to meet all you blokes. Thanks again and best wishes, Rob

Hmm, Enco becoming MSC, sounds like "we're doing away with the flanker brand we've owned for 21 years because they offer too good of a deal to customers and we want to gouge the crap out of them consistently". MSC consistently sells EXACTLY the same item as ENCO for more than ENCO, often times MUCH MORE. Shame on them!
@turningpoint6643
@turningpoint6643 8 жыл бұрын
I fully understand your very valid point. But Enco quit shipping to us low life's up here in Canaduh a few years ago so were limited anyway. I do appreciate Tom's mention of KBC, but...........................KBC Canaduh verses KBC in the U.S. has a vastly different pricing structure. Yes right now there is quite a difference due to the 23% money exchange between the Canuck buck and the U.S. greenback. However even when there's little to no difference between the two country's actual dollar worth KBC up here is consistently higher for the exact same item against even MSC's high prices . Almost always I can get it a bit to a lot cheaper through MSC even with the money exchange and shipping the far longer distance. There's no duty on incoming machine tools and machine accessory's into Canada. But there is a further rip off from brokerage company's here of $50-$75 per order just for shuffling a few bits of paper. I do give KBC there kudos for supporting Tom a bit and helping out with the bash, unfortunately there not doing me any favors up here. I've even had a discussion with the president of KBC for both the U.S. and Canadian divisions of the same company some years ago about this exact problem and got no where with her. I very much wish I could get access to a few of the company's the U.S. residents can. McMaster Carr won't ship to us at all, and to be honest I don't blame them with the extra paper work required. NAFTA isn't always two way street.
