In this episode of Mondays at Mirai, Ryan Neil is prepping for the cold wave of later winter coming our way in the Pacific Northwest, leaving him overwhelmed with prep work. Thankfully, renowned bonsai practitioner Todd Schlafer as well as the Mirai garden crew team up to help out with the delicate, dirt-filled process of repotting.
A scattering of legos populate a soil shovel as the team gets to work in the greenhouse, completing 2 bonsai repottings out of 284 more to finish. Todd Schlafer pulls apart a grow box on a massive yamadori spruce while Ryan preps a rectangular ceramic for a shohin, thus commencing the “dueling” repots. While Sam is busy holding the un-potted spruce upright, Ryan shares the meaning of being the apprentice tasked with holding the tree during the repot, such as he once was for Mr. Kimura in Japan. Troy is up to his usual antics messing around with camera man Josh, making an “invisible” appearance.
