In this episode of Mondays at Mirai, Ryan Neil is prepping for the cold wave of later winter coming our way in the Pacific Northwest, leaving him overwhelmed with prep work. Thankfully, renowned bonsai practitioner Todd Schlafer as well as the Mirai garden crew team up to help out with the delicate, dirt-filled process of repotting.
A scattering of legos populate a soil shovel as the team gets to work in the greenhouse, completing 2 bonsai repottings out of 284 more to finish. Todd Schlafer pulls apart a grow box on a massive yamadori spruce while Ryan preps a rectangular ceramic for a shohin, thus commencing the “dueling” repots. While Sam is busy holding the un-potted spruce upright, Ryan shares the meaning of being the apprentice tasked with holding the tree during the repot, such as he once was for Mr. Kimura in Japan. Troy is up to his usual antics messing around with camera man Josh, making an “invisible” appearance.

I've only repotted one of my maples and I'm glad I don't have so many trees. But I really am enjoying it. I've been waiting to get at them for a long time.

Great series... long may it continue! What top team to work with, you could literally go hard all day without a break and be stoked, rinse and repeat. Fair play with what you bring to that community Ryan. Loving life hard!

Thanks guys; great video. A slight nitpick Ryan (really a piece of advice if anything from my professional life as a pulmonary critical care physician, who takes care of COVID patients)- the mask with valve/ exhalation vent that you have on in this video is not recommended by the CDC- even though it protects you, it can eject your respiratory secretions several feet into the air around you. Noticing that the loop masks that your colleagues are wearing are probably not medical grade (given they are probably bought in stores), they are at risk from you, if you should (unfortunately) contract the virus- as you may know, even if you are asymptomatic, you are still potentially contagious; also this is a virus with occasional airborne spread, and while your (and your colleagues') risk being outside is lower than if you were indoors, still I thought I would educate about viruses (since I am merely a novice bonsai enthusiast). Anyway, take care, stay safe, and good vibes. Here is the CDC page with relevant information - www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/about-face-coverings.html
