Purchased and returned. 4K firmware has taken forever to launch and will only be 30p. Clamps to hold phone will not accommodate the iPhone 16 pro max in any case so you will need to go without. Thumb screws to lock in phone are difficult. V2 will probably fix a lot of the issues. Streaming and recording work well. Tools are nice.
@mondobytes2 ай бұрын
My understanding is that 4K firmware is right around the corner, not sure if 4K 30 is an iPhone limitation but does suck you can't do 4K 60 or higher. I do agree the thumbscrews are rubbish, I wouldn't say it's a deal breaker but I feel they could have done a much better job considering that so many phone clamps exist that are actually good!

thanks phil for the actual honest review 🙏 no support for the pro max model is an insane oversight, like how do you not add a few grams of plastic to accommodate all phones

Looks good. But might hold off for V2 since I do not have an immediate need. This is the way to go as phones get more and more powerful and have more and more storage.

Is there a limitation on the cameras this can record from and is there any plans to record RAW footage? Also, could someone take the 4k footage recorded in this an use it for the final product? is there any quality differences between whats on the SD/CF card compared to the internal recording on the phone?
@KofiYeboah2 ай бұрын
I actually tried this! I left my signal in s log and used the hdr internal pro res, and it actually came out real decent !
@mondobytes2 ай бұрын
Atomos Ninja Phone works with any camera that has an HDMI output and can send a clean signal. As for any plans of recording RAW footage I'm going to guess that's an Apple limitation and not Atomos. I doubt Apple will unlock RAW recording, but one can hope right? As for difference in quality between on board recording and iPhone yes there's a difference, on board will always be better. Heck even when I've done my own testing with Prores external recorders vs internal recording I've always felt internal to be slightly better, this is no different.

I cannot get mine to save directly to my photos app on my iPhone. The only way to do it is to open atomos app, find files, download files, the open Apple files, then save files, and then it saves to my photos app. There has to be a better way surely that’s not right?

much love on the review. i’ve been wanting to love this device but it’s sadly been a brick in a drawer since it came out. the new features that are trickling out are starting to make it worth it but one omission that really bothers me is the inability to record on camera and phone simultaneously. Other option for Sony monitor and control app or monitor plus - much simpler and includes camera control and more functionality - with direct USB connection don’t need extra battery and also have good low latency. For my needs, much better option.
@mondobytes2 ай бұрын
Not everyone uses a Sony camera, also doesn't record internally, no camera to cloud, proxy recoding, drains your phones battery, etc. If you don't need or care for those things than yes I'd say those apps are decent options but I stopped using them because they were so buggy and always crashed or lost connection. Maybe they're much better now since the last time I tried it was almost 2 years ago, but if it works for you that's awesome! As they say, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

@@mondobytes Monitor+ app works with HDMI signal ;) I use it with my Sony and Canon from work. It does suck it doesnt have a recording feature like record a copy of the camera input onto an SD card. Would ve great to use for the older cameras like the Sony a7S that only did 4K externally. But even a basic 4K backup file would be great.

I use the Accsoon version. It does work well, but the number issue I have is that if you film in sunlight, then the iPhone screen dims and makes it completely unusable. Went back to a normal monitor. This isn’t the fault of the atomos, it is the iPhone. Outside of sunlight though, they are awesome.

How does this compare to the accsoon SEemoo
@mondobytes2 ай бұрын
They're very comparable, I prefer the UI on Atomos over Seemo but that doesn't mean the Seemo is bad, it's still very intuitive and easy to use. I say if you can get the Atomos on sale like it is right now for $200 then I would go for that one but at full retail $400 for Atomos and Acssoon for $180 ($143 on sale right now) then I'd go with Accsoon. I don't think the Atomos is $200 better.

I like wha they are doing here with this one. But I much rather use The Acsoon Seemo 4k which the Ninja Phone is clearly a response to. Atomos can see the writing on the wall, in a few more years they will be obsolete, as our phones will be more capable than the monitors that they sell.
@mondobytes2 ай бұрын
I mean our phones are already more capable than any monitor out in the market but not everyone wants to use their phone as a monitor. Also I prefer using a smaller phone for personal use but choose to use a larger monitor for filming. I think there's a market for both and this is just another tool available to us to make life easier and more efficient.
@PrestonGladd2 ай бұрын
@@mondobytes I suppose what I mean to say is that in a few years we will have phones with 4 TB SSD's, IO that can support any signal, and wireless features that will make cables optional. Make the apple watch a bit bigger and more capable, and when your phone is in monitor mode your watch takes over and can handle most of your phone tasks. no need to have extra gear to deal with.
@mondobytes2 ай бұрын
@@PrestonGladd Could be a possibility, it's much more complex though as we don't have universal standards and every camera manufacturer is doing their own thing. Everyone would have to agree to a specific standard and as much as I'd love to believe that will happen I don't see it being universally adopted which is why these products exist because they can take a video signal and now let you do whatever you want with it using your phones tech. The only company really using phone tech to extend a cameras capability is RED. The RED camera app control is really solid and you can tell is truly an extension to what the camera is capable of doing because it was designed by RED and not a third party. I believe the only way we will see this happen sooner than later is if Apple bought a camera brand, to be honest it's a shame Apple didn't buy RED instead of Nikon I feel we could have had an insane camera with tech that we've yet to see in Cinema using AI and computational video. But I guess time will tell.
