From America, we are spoiled here with all the big machines. You mention muscle memory and thats no joke . Thank you for these videos. I am curious about the cost of labor.
@mondofarms4343
@mondofarms4343 6 ай бұрын
Indeed, we are working towards being able to buy some machines and increase our productivity. Fortunately, the cost of agricultural labour in our distruct is quite reasonable and allowing us to grow slowly. Others who operate farms in more rural areas face real challenges with the quality and quantity of labour.

just found your farm, watching you from the Horn of Africa great content . i am setting up my farm in a virgin land which is flat and no rocks. but has a lot of shrubs and small trees., my question is which one is better for land clearing; wheel loader or backhoe? thanks and keep going forward.

For a farm your size that is growing working capital, that portable thresher seems to be a very good choice. Something I'm certain you consider is one extremely complicated and expensive combine would be a marvelous status symbol - but it would put all of the soybean cutters and all but one of the people supporting the thresher out of a job. And it would be a maintenance nightmare. In Zambia, as in every developing country, gainful employment is so important to everyday people. Some may call it the "distribution of wealth" but I prefer "a rising tide lifts all boats" even the very very small boats. A rising tide is what fuels the healthy growth of a nation like Zambia. I like your use of the inexpensive blue tarps in many sizes. They are so critical with a crop like soybeans because they capture the majority of the pod explosions or "ballistic dispersal" of beans. For these reasons, I suggest you use tarps right from the very beginning of harvest. 1) Give each cutter their own small tarp that they will pull behind them as they move through the field in a straight line. 2) As they cut the stems, they are thrown into a pile on their small tarp. 3) When their tarp is full, the harvester can carry the entire bundle in one trip to the designated threshing area. 4) Now all ballistic dispersal beans are captured by the tarp and multiple small piles can be moved by one person in one trip to the threshing pile by collecting the four corners of the tarp into a bundle. 5) It will be obvious to the cutters who is cutting stalks quickly and efficiently and who is lagging. 6) The cutters will be self policing because they do not want the slacker to make the whole team look bad and jeopardize their individual wages. The soybean straw is a very valuable byproduct. If you want to do anything more than disc it into the ground where it lands, have your mechanics build an enclosed box on top of a large tractor pulled farm wagon and blow the chaff directly into the box. If you can efficiently transport it, you can sell it as animal bedding. Then collect it and spread it as fertilizer once it has been used. That, my friend is a win - win! =D

Wow! Impressive! 1.What kind of weedkiller do you use? 2. Is it wrong to wait for soya to dry so that you just pick up from the ground especially dina which doesn't shatter much. 3. From the machine do you pack directly in the bags or it has to be cleaned again. Thanks

Hi Emmanuel. We dont share such numbers on the channel. We feel that as a business, we need to keep that information proprietary unless it is directly relevant to the story we are sharing. Other channels share such. But our focus is on the journey and our experiences in this crazy farming thing.

Chimwemwe, Kondwani, Sangwani and other tumbuka names are found at Kimberley, which is deeicated to my late mother. Winterthorn is much larger, and over the years, we have various sets of names for fields in different areas. E.g. US states (Alaska, Georgia, Florida) Central and South American country names (Jamaica, Brazil) US Democratic Presidents (Clinton, Kennedy) locational references (Riverside, Westgate), and Asian cities (Tokyo, Baghdad, Bombay, Dubai, Jerusalem)

I know what you mean. We have to draw a balance in such things. Show it, but dont sell it unless they pay you for the marketing exposure. The channel has been taking up a lot more time and effort, not to mention all the equipment I keep buying to improve quality. But we are now starting to work with commercial partners for marketing products and services.
