The Importance of Training Farm Workers: Farming Success Tips 1

Starting a farming venture often begins with investment in land and infrastructure. But as the enterprise grows, so does the know-how of its workforce.
This video shares some of the ways we continuously up skill our farm workers with a mix of practical training in the field, as well as taking them to outside the farm for added exposure.

If I were to cultivate this plot of land, I would do everything to increase its organic matter content, its fertility and feed its mycorrhizal network (fungi) and bacteria ... So, I'll start by sowing broad beans and other leguminous plants ... These plants will bring nitrogen to the soil. Above all, these plants will feed the soil's mycorrhizal (fungal) and bacterial network... After harvesting my beans, I'll leave the stems and leaves on the ground to increase the soil's organic matter content ... At a glance, I'd say this soil has no more than 2% organic matter. Above 5% organic matter, the soil becomes very fertile, structured and has a great capacity to retain rainwater: 100 liters per m2, or 1,000,000 liters per hectare for 5% organic matter... To preserve the soil's fertility, I cover my soil all year round with dead plants, shredded wood ... This cover will shade the soil and prevent it from burning ... This blanket of dead plants will be eaten by soil decomposers, bacteria and fungi ... Then, these decomposers will be eaten by their predators in the soil, and the digestion of these predators will feed the soil with bio-available molecules for plants ... Finally, any crops grown on this soil will be connected to the mushroom network, which will provide them with water and food. Fungi can also provide the plants with the medicines they need... The same goes for soil bacteria... These plants will grow better because the soil will be in the shade, with plant waste covering it ... When the soil heats up too much, above 30°C, few plants grow well. Plants like to have soil that's not too hot, otherwise they wait until nightfall to grow, when the sun has gone down... Shading the soil is very important, as the sun's UV rays burn off all the life in the soil ... - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - In French : Si je devais cultiver cette parcelle de terre, je ferais tout pour augmenter son taux de matière organique, sa fertilité et alimenter son réseau mycorhizien (champignons) et ses bactéries ... Donc, je commencerai par faire un semis de fèves et d'autres plantes de type légumineuse ... Ces plantes vont m'apporter de l'azote au sol. Ces plantes vont surtout alimenter le réseau mycorhizien (champignons) et bactérien du sol ... Après avoir récolté mes fèves, je laisserai sur le sol la tige et les feuilles des fèves, ceci afin d'augmenter le taux de matière organique du sol ... A vue d'oeil, je dirais que ce sol n'as pas plus que 2% de Matière Organique. Au dessus de 5% de matière organique, le sol devient très fertile, structuré et sa capacité à retenir l'eau de pluie est grande: 100 litres par m2, ou 1.000.000 litres par hectare pour 5% de matière organique ... Pour conserver cette fertilité du sol, je couvrirai mon sol toute l'année avec des plantes mortes, du bois broyés ... Cette couverture va mettre le sol à l'ombre et l'empêcher de bruler au sol ... Cette couverture de plantes mortes va être mangé par les décomposeurs du sol, les bactéries et les champignons du sol ... Ensuite, ces décomposeurs vont se faire manger par leurs prédateurs dans le sol, et la digestion de ces prédateur va nourrir le sol avec des molécules bio-disponible pour les plantes ... Enfin, toutes les cultures qui seront faites sur ce sol vont se connecter au réseaux de champignons qui va leur apporter de l'eau et de la nourriture. Les champignons peuvent aussi apporter à la plante des médicaments qu'elle réclame ... Idem avec les bactéries du sol ... Ces plantes vont mieux pousser car le sol sera à l'ombre avec des déchets végétaux qui le recouvre ... Quand un sol chauffe trop, au dessus de 30°C, peu de plantes poussent bien. Les plantes aiment avoir un sol pas trop chaud, sinon elles attendent la nuit pour se développer, lorsque le soleil est couché ... Mettre un sol à l'ombre est très important, car les UV du soleil brule toute la vie du sol ...

Very educative videos, and definitely hats off to you and the team for the work you are putting to develop the farm and also come up with these videos that educate and inspire so many of us. I can’t say thank you enough. The two questions I have are that I have the opportunity of getting drip tape with an emitter spacing of 8 inches at a pretty affordable price. I intend to use it in water melon farming and the plant spacing would be some 24 inches, which is much more than the 8 inches. I know you don’t grow water melon, but I thought I should ask all the same: Is the one emitter which will not be directly on a plant be an absolute waste of water or will it be beneficial in keeping the spaces between the plants moist? I’m asking this because I think I saw water dripping on empty spaces between some egg plants in some of your videos. Secondly, have you used it and if so, what is your experience with the use of water-soluble NPK in fertigation?

Indeed, Ba Japhen. One piece of advice we always give is that farming should be started long before retirement. That way, by the time you are ready to leave work, the farming enterprise is up and running peofitably to replace the income.

I'm inspired sir by the wonderful work from Mondo Farm My question is how is weather out there especially during summer interms of high temperatures as you're doing outdoor farming because in my area in summer the temperatures are a bit too high

Indeed, temperatures are rising. Climate change is affecting us all. Each year is the hottest year on record, until the next one, and the one after that. We have to adopt different methods of farming to cope with it. E.g. During the hottest months, we start drip irrigating around 05:00 until around 11:00. Then pause until after 15:00 and go until 20:00. That has meant chabging working hours for some team members and introducing a kind of shift system.
