This fascinating talk explores the traits and behaviors of publicized “scam artists” and how they separate people from their money. There have been a plethora of scammers highlighted (Elizabeth Holmes, Billy McFarland) on recent television mini-series that set the background. This talk provides a learning experience and how to protect your assets and be better informed when investing or donating to your philanthropic causes.
J Mase III dives into money lessons and techniques scammers use and explores if those same skills can be used to better communities. Originally from Philadelphia, but currently living in Seattle, J Mase III, will reframe the way you think about famous scam artists. J Mase will dive into money lessons and techniques scammers use and will leave you wondering if those same skills can be used to better communities. An author, artist, and consultant, when he isn't working, J Mase and his dog take daily 7-mile walks. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

thanks. i feel like something you didnt mention as well is that when people lend/give money, if they feel secure that they will get their money back or benefit in kind, they will more likely part with their money. which is why they would rather give it to someone they thought was rich/powerful vs someone whom actually needs it but offers the lender no benefit in return.

This Ted talk gave me more confidence in my recent decision to be a independent contractor! People are constantly told to trade years of time for a few bucks an hour meanwhile others are making thousands an hour running their own business. Taking out the middle man is a good way to avoid being scammed for your time by selling your work directly to those who will pay for it rather than to a company that will provide work for pay. It’s not the overall solution but it’s the best strategy I have for my own survival.

A good example of one of these scams is getting medical care and only finding out how much it will cost when it's already too late. Or having to pay more for medical care if you don't have insurance compared to how much someone's insurance policy ends up paying for the same service.

Just because you are rich doesn't mean you are any smarter, just you hurt less and have more opportunities than people who have less because of the comfort of your wealth to try other things

"People with wealth aren't better at making money decisions." The speaker states this as a fact though a look at any evidence would show that learning from bad decisions is a key to wealth. What else do can you spot to hone your skills that may help you avoid being scammed? The speaker even tells you about having a high degree of scamming skills and tactics. If you view this at a meta-level, it is genius -- like Borat and Kayla Lemieux.

Wrong because many people with wealth file bankruptcy, or use debt
@alexanderthegreat1270

Yeah, learning from bad decisions is a key to wealth, but the vast vast majority of entrepreneurs and hedge fund managers are allowed to recover from bad decisions due to the safety net constructed from generational wealth and privilege. It’s the difference between being bailed out by the government in 2008 from your own meddling and losing your house in 2008 through no fault of your own. It’s also why Billionaires get to ride off their ‘rough road to success’ image because even if they had a company fail in the long run it doesn’t mean much, further strengthening exploitation. Remember, people thought that Bernie Madoff was a tried and true businessman
