Are you looking to upgrade your mobile hotspot for travel and are wondering if the Solis 5G is worth it? Let's take look at the device and what it has to offer.
Review: moneyat30.com/...
Years ago, I picked up the original Solis hotspot device and have been using it ever since. However, for the holidays, I was gifted Solis’s latest model, the Solis 5G. So, how does the new hotspot compare and is it worth it? Let’s take a look at what’s included and my experience with the device so far.
First, let’s take an overview of what you get when you purchase the Solis 5G
In the box, you’ll get your hotspot device along with a USB-A to USB-C charging cable and a SIM card ejector tool. But, much more important than what comes in the physical box is what’s now included with the purchase of a new device. When you purchase a Solis 5G, you’ll get 1 GB of global data each month. This data can be used in any of the more than 135 countries supported by Solis. As someone who’s previously needed to purchase data each time I’ve traveled, this new included data is a huge benefit.
The downside is that the Solis 5G currently retails for nearly $400 - although this does include shipping in the U.S. By the way, if you do decide to buy, you can save 10% on your device by using the code MONEY30 at checkout.
Next, one of the biggest changes with this Solis model is the LCD touchscreen - although you will still need a phone or other device to activate and manage your hotspot’s data.
Looking at the Solis 5G online, I was excited about the prospect of interfacing directly with the device via a touch screen. And while there are some features on here we’ll talk about later, I was a bit surprised that, in order to activate my data plan and better monitor how much data I had left, I still need to use my phone and scan a QR code. What’s more, the Solis 5G uses a different website than the regular device or the Lite. also On this website, you can override the device name as well as change the network name and password if you want.
Despite the minor annoyance of needing to manage your data via a phone or computer, the touchscreen interface does have some nice features. For one, you can see how many devices are currently connected and even block unknown devices if needed. Of course, it’s also helpful to see how much battery your hotspot has left and what network you’re currently on. So, while I wish it could do even more, I do like the touchscreen interface overall.
Speaking of data, should you need more than what’s provided, there are a few plan options.
Currently, Solis offers a variety of data options, including both global and region-specific plans. First, there’s their $9 Global Daypasses, which sound like a great deal - but with Solis warning that throttling could occur after 1GB of data in consumed in a day, I don’t see much of a point in them. Alternatively, however, the monthly global unlimited plan is $99 and includes 20 GB of data before throttling. But this plan does autorenew, so be sure to cancel if you don’t want to do that.
Personally, I think it’s probably best to just purchase global or domestic data by the GB. For the U.S., domestic data starts at $8 for 1GB and gets cheaper as you work up to $80 for 20 GB. As for Global per GB data, you can get 1 GB for $12 while 20 GB will cost you $180. FYI, that MONEY30 code also works for 10% off data.
What’s also nice is that your devices lifetime data plan allotment will be used before any other data plan you may have. Plus, per GB data doesn’t expire. So, if you think you’ll burn through more than your 1GB of included data, you may want to stock up on some spare GBs to use as you travel.
One of the best features of the Solis 5G in my opinion is SignalScan
On the Solis 5G’s homescreen, you’ll see an icon in the bottom right corner for SignalScan. With this tool, you can have your device seek out a better network connection that might be available. I found this useful when the T-Mobile network I was on by default was giving me problems and I was able to connect to AT&T instead using SignalScan. Of course, there’s no guarantee this trick will work everytime, but it’d definitely a nice feature to have.

I used twp skyroam mobile products for travelling wifi before (before the Solis round orange product). The products were fine until the gadget battery got old. Hard to find replacement battery (not even sure if it is still replaceable). Also, once they have a new product, the log in screen does not work for older products, and you have to call in to the CHAT room., Fairly cumbersome.

Can anybody confirm how aggressive the throttling is? Was thinking about purchasing the 100gb high speed plan with this model for on the go gaming “avoiding some atrocious hotel Wi-Fi speeds”. I don’t mind being throttled so long as my speed maintains a steady 4-10mbps download in metropolitan areas.

Yes you can. It takes a few days for them to merge over, but, just call customer service phone number and they'll get it done.
