I live in Vienna, Austria and my apartment is not as small as this gentleman‘s I do have my own bathroom, toilet and separate bedroom and a walk-in clothing cupboard but my apartment is small. The rent is Euro 380 (a steal). I come from South Africa, Cape Town where I lived in an apartment with an ocean view, huge balcony and before that, grew up in a fairly big house with a big garden boasting beautiful fruit trees and plenty of space. So, when I moved to Europe, I cried bitter tears to have to move into such a small apartment. Now, I absolutely love my apartment, it‘s saved me tons of money, I have no credit card debt, I can get on an airplane and travel anywhere in the world at the drop of a hat and as I grow older, the big spaces I thought were hip and absolutely necessary, are no longer what I need. It feels as if I am in a cosy nest.

When I was young and didn't have much money, I lived in a similar fashion, just not in New York City. My homes were bigger, but pretty cheap. I totally relate to finding treasures in trash bins, or gems that are sitting out by the street, waiting for pickup. I admire your thriftiness. It's sort of an adventure of life as we gain more money. When we start off with little, it seems we keep that lesson for life. We value what we earn more ... just my opinion. As you get older, you'll probably earn more money and your lifestyle will change - but you will never forget this time when you lived in New York City for $385 a month rent. Now, you have a video history. Thank you for sharing your lifestyle with us. You are to be commended for your tenacity and adaptability.

I worked two years at one of the most intense Housing Development county departments (Broward, FL), and this was the conclusion I came to after seeing all the programs. County, state and federal agencies do their best to provide affordable housing, but they fall short in numbers. If they'd decrease the size (and keep quality) of the housing options, they could help so many more citizens to be independent or at least not homeless. Primarily this could be welcomed by single people.

My first apartment used to be dorms (like back in the 60s) that were then rennovated into apartments in the 80s. The entire apartment used to be a dorm, so basically about the size of a bedroom. I wouldn't mind living there again if I ever found myself living alone. Being my very first place of my own, I have warm fuzzies thinking about it. I had a bunk bed, where the upper part was a twin size bed and the lower part was empty to leave room for a desk. Except I just used it for storage. My desk/table was one of those "breakfast in bed" trays with legs. I'd just sit on the floor and use that like a very tiny Japanese table. I had a "kitchen" which had a mini fridge (about the size of the one here). Mini stove/oven that only had 2 burners, and the oven could fit a 9X12 baking pan. And a small sink, it was the only sink, so it doubled as a bathroom sink for brushing teeth.. My "bathroom" was a toilet and shower in the corner. I rigged up a curtain to give it some privacy in case anyone was over. That was it. No closet, so I just got a little self standing clothing rack. I didn't have a TV. It didn't matter because between going to school, working, hanging out with friends; I wasn't home a whole lot other than a place to sleep, take a shower and maybe grab a bite to eat before running out to my next thing. I was still just a teenager, (I'd escaped a really BAD home life, but I won't get into that), so it was like the most awesome bedroom. Compared to where/how I was living before, having my own place was peaceful, and I felt safe. Can't put a price on that. But the rent was $280 (and not in NYC).

Truth is most people don't really live in their whole house or apartment. They have a spot where they spend most of their waking hours and that spot isn't much larger than your apartment. Mine is at the coffee table in the family room where I sit with my computer. Otherwise, I prepare food in the kitchen that I carry back to my spot to eat. And, I sleep in my bed in the bedroom. All the rest of the place is pretty much uninhabited most of the time and I pay someone to come in and clean it. Basically, you are occupying the same space I do in 2000 square feet. I do like the extra room for entertaining and being able to have over night guests. But you obviously do your socializing out of your living space. So, what would you do with more space anyway, pay someone to clean it? You are fine just as you are and not really deprived of anything of much importance.

Having separate rooms for work and rest is useful tho, separating the two is one of the most common advices for working from home. I live in a similar place to this: one room plus a shared bathroom&kitchen and while it's fine, I do have trouble focusing on work very often because everything I do; studying, working, watching youtube, hobbies, eating, makeup, etc. etc. is at the same desk in the same room. I'm definitely someone who needs that separation to do well, eg. I can focus so much better in the library than here (but the library, college, etc. are closed) I'm cool living here I do now, but I 100% intend to eventually live in an actual house (not even a big one, but like separate rooms, my own bathroom, stuff like that). Just wanted to explain a use for at least some of the extra space a multi-room apartment/house provides.

I like living in a palace. Good for pacing

Not true. I have a large place. Hot days I like the living room on first floor. Cold days I like the family room adjacent to the kitchen. Sometimes we eat at the patio sometimes at the kitchen island others at the dining room table. Bedroom for sleeping or having conversations with the spouse. Work at a bedroom turned office. Have coffee and read books in the library. You may be used to hang out on a corner of your house. Not everybody is like that.

Yes, people have way too much wasted space. It's so unnecessary.

Given where your place is located and what you're paying, you've got a sweet deal! As for being 30 and living there, former mayor Ed Koch never moved into Gracie Mansion because he had a rent-controlled apartment in the Village that he didn't want to give up.

I think the rent is a fair deal because there is no bathroom or stove/oven

Honestly William, great job. It’s clean, you are well taken care of and healthy and so are your doggos. I didn’t know you could live in NYC for $385 a month, many people have done much less with much more there.

I applaud what you have done to live within your means. Better still you have provided a home for two dogs who are content and happy with their life. Great achievement...

This is New York living. I slept in someone’s stairway in New York for a week when I started my first big job after college. One of the best times of my life.

I don’t think you’re crazy at all. The place looks good and life is what you make it

It's like having a VERY big room for $385, in New York, not bad at all.
