Woman Living in a 10' x 11' Shed Converted into a Budget Tiny House

Always open to new adventures, Heather has travelled the world, she has lived full-time in a van, and now she's in a tiny she-shed where she's dedicating herself to building community, dancing as much as possible, and being creative in her work and with her art. Join us on a tour of her unique and beautiful DIY tiny house. The shed is 10'x11', it's built on a concrete pad, it's fully insulated, it cost $5,000 CAD to build, and it's more spacious than you think.

The shed has a sleeping loft, which is stacked on top of a closet loft, which is stacked on top of a cozy couch nook. Yes, it's a little tight but she managed to fit 3 levels in the shed so that she'd have space for everything she needed. There's also a wood stove for heat, a spacious kitchen with a surprising amount of storage, a home office with a view, and even a composting toilet.
For electricity she is hooked up to an extension cord, and for water she carries in her drinking water, and she has access to the main house for washing dishes and showering.
After 3 years on the road with her husband, they decided to part ways earlier this year and this shed is a haven where she can heal and grow. And while stability is nice, someone as adventurous as Heather still needs to hit the road once in awhile. She is in the process of converting another van, and she also manages the Van Life Ontario group to welcome and host people in the van life community. So true! When l got divorced (many years ago) my first place that l could call my own was a one room efficiency. It had an attached bathroom and the main room held a two burner stove with a small fridge underneath, a small sink, a daybed, a small table with two chairs, a dresser and a place for a tv. I loved it, because it was mine alone!!

Yes I heard a few 'insights' of where she came from. One was when she was looking inside the fridge that she now can keep it clean. wow. This set up would be hard for anyone who doesn't have a mom with property for the shed, like this lady can : "Shower at moms. Washing dishes, do that at moms." This shed may blossom into a real tiny house with enough electricity to cook on a stove, use the toaster and computer without blowing a fuse., Happy Trails to you.

Are you kidding me, in Divorce the women absolutely gets everything! Even if she NEVER worked and he paid off all her student loans! The law's need to seriously need to change! She left him,and he flew her to see Paul McCartney for her birthday. My brother took excellent care of his wife,and she used him ! And took his money 💸💰💸 . Never get married in California and never live in California! You have zero Rights as a guy when it comes to Divorce! My brother has no place to live! He has no money, the court gave her everything! The law's don't evenly divide everything, so you can have a place to live! But the court at least didn't allow her to keep the house! That's what she thought she would get, but she couldn't pay the mortgage!

I love your pioneer spirit. When I was 63 I was layed off in the middle of a depression in my area. My wife is handicapped and we had spent almost all of our savings in 2010 paying her medical bills, I was layed off in 2015. Our house was foreclosed on. Instead of building a tiny house I found an old RV. It was furnished and had appliances and heat and a/c. Cost: $3000. We are now living on my Social Security. We found 1/2 acre to park the trailer The owner basically gave me the land if I would help feed his livestock and watch his place. We are 100 miles from the closest large city. My wife and I don’t need much, we usually put a little money back each month from our SS. I wish I had done this 30 years ago.

I really like your place, Heather! Now that I'm a divorced empty nester, I looked around and bought a fixer-upper 1 bedroom duplex for only $1500.00 here in Wichita, Kansas, with a nice fenced yard and great neighbors! It took about 2 weeks of sweat equity, and a few tears, to get my little nest livable. It still needs more work done, but nothing major, but since my medical problems are increasing, I can't do a whole lot....BUT IT'S MINE AND I DON'T HAVE ANY RENT OR MORTGAGE PAYMENTS! And in case anyone thinks I meant to put 15 thousand instead of 15 hundred, I didn't! Believe me, buying a home for only $1500 and not having to worry about moving again or noisy neighbors, I can easily and gladly put up with wood floors and a few other cosmetic issues! I feel so very blessed to have found my little nest!

Great to read of part of your journey. It shows the benefit of changing our expectations, that in fact we don't need all the junk associated with modern life. Wooden floor? Ask or buy off-cuts from a carpet wholesaler or retailer. What they call "samples" can be what keeps your feet warm in winter. Go well, stay safe.

@@juliejules7780 Thank goodness I am no longer homeless at the present time. Three years was definitely enough for me. It was not fun and honestly, I'm surprised that I survived. It was rough. Especially, when it was storming and I was terrified that a tree would get struck by lightening and crush me in the tent. The summers were extremely hot and the winters were brutal. Yeah, really not fun.

I am SOOOO impressed! Your place is beautiful! It is so functional, yet clearly "yours" with your own touch and organization. I don't know I would have come up with so much workable and livable space as you have in such a small building. I don't think it is "crazy" at all having to allocate when/where to use electricity. You simply know the limitations of what you are working with and work within those constraints. Clearly you are good at problem solving in that sort of organization. I love how you stacked function and utilized the vertical aspect of the building to its fullest and yet still kept an open center living area so you weren't claustraphobic. When I watched you climb up to the loft I thought "what if you were sick at some point and needed to be able to get to the toilet faster or couldn't climb down from the loft fast enough without injury? Then I remembered the couch at floor level centrally located to the toilet and the stove. All so incredibly functional for multiple needs. Great job! I am remembering much of your design in the event I need to follow suit some day. Thanks so much for sharing!

Great use of space and light. During cold weather when you don't want to go out for dishes it's easy to use spray bottles and wipe dishes (one bottle with a few drops soap and one bottle with clean water). I add a bit of vinegar and baking soda for extra cleaning. Thanks for sharing all the great ideas!

You go girl! I did something similar at 49 to go back to school. Two grown daughters, divorced 13 yrs. Rented out my small house and found a 10" x 10" room, separate entrance and pus tiny bathroom. $100 a mo, [32 yrs ago]. Brought a dorm frig., micro-wave and electric skillet. A twin bed and small desk, a few plants and sm. comfy chair. It was a good year!

Easier said than done. Allot depends on how much outdoor space you have. cubes like that are bearable when you’re on a large property. Place them one next to each other with your neighbor 5 to10’ on either side, is a whole different experience.

Awesome, you did a great job! I had to sell my home in Texas to move to Florida on my mother's property, I built a tiny house from a shed, too. I love it! I recently built on a tiny dolly shop because I have an online store. I gave away nearly everything I owned, but I've never felt more content. My Molly, chihuahua, and I wake up to birds singing, trees and flowers...and, little lizards called anoles live under my tiny porch..I don't mind them at all. Life is not about stuff, it's about what you've found since you gave up stuff. It leaves you to experience what really means most in life, especially family. I retired early from nursing because of rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis, I thought life was over for me...it's only just begun. Great job. I live in a very large old home, inherited, and since I retired I'm downsizing. Sorting out and giving my kids things they want. I'm lucky to also own a small farm outside the town where I live. Planning to sell town property and move to farm. My son and his family live on the farm. Im 67, retired, and I just don't want all this responsibility anymore. I'm planning a small home that is wheelchair friendly. I have some issues that may make this necessary some day. So do what makes you happy. Life is short.

You wouldn't believe how quick these can be built. My brother has a business building these and barn sheds , cabins. Started with Lowes and Home depot subbing. Then started his own. It's way cheaper and cuts everyones prices ...he just moved to Arkansas but. He was in tx and la. I worked with him in la. We built them so strong many still stood when I left after Katrina.

I’m 34, recently become single from an engagement. And this video just really speaks to me. Gives me the affirmation of how simple I really just want to live. For some reason, this gives me a sense of realization as to how I really want to live. Having complete control of your life and having a say of what you want to do, where, and how you want to do it. I have been living my life as a provider, so my decisions, always depends on the welfare of my immediate family. I wish someday to be able to just run away and finally do what I actually want to do. As one who did just that 60 years ago, may I offer a little Wisdom? Don’t say “someday”. People who do this invariably end up old and never having done it. In reality, people come up with the most amazing excuses to wait till that someday. But you have to be courageous. Nothing wonderful has ever been accomplished easily. I’ve been homeless trying to get here. I’ve been thru serious illnesses but I just kept going and I persevered and got there. Don’t let your cultural issues become an anchor. It’s hard, I know where you are coming from…..but at some point you have to decide whether you will live your whole life living for someone else’s expectations..or not. Sometimes, as in my case, I had to leave family behind. In the end, it has been worth it to be Free and Happy.

I would love to live Tiny but I don't have property. You got this! There’s so many options… tiny apartment, tiny rv that you can rent a spot to park it… even maybe a lot in a small town, they are sometimes cheap. Something great will come along 😊

This is by far my favorite. I’ve always thought it’d be amazing to live in a one room, wood floored huge house with a deck and beautiful view. Only the bathroom on the side. This open space in the middle makes it livable instead of wasting space on tiny, separate rooms. More windows is a great idea.

Best wishes to you in your tiny home; it is awesome. My only recommendation to you would be to either paint or put some type of siding on your tiny home pretty quickly. That outside wood is particle board and it will disintegrate from the weather pretty quickly.

Hey! I live in a tiny shed. Mine is 190sqft and I even have a weight set in it. No plumbing. I rent my house out to my mother with the understanding that I'll be in to go to the bathroom, shower and cook. My overhead is super low so stress is equally low. It's allowing me to not work while simultaneously becoming a millionaire. I'm 85% there and counting. I hope to get the rest of the way in a year or so. I love the tiny shed and am very grateful for how it's helping me in life but I'm looking forward to getting a bigger place eventually.

I hope you are gonna share the wealth with your mom and take care of her at no charge when she is no longer able to care for herself. Does your mom have a stress-free life working and paying your rent while you become a millionaire? Your mom seems like a wonderful lady.. take good care of her :)

@@CC-gy5zpI rent the house to Mom for less than the cost of the house payment. And that is half of what an equivalent home would rent for. The house payment is small so I could get almost the same amount by renting out the shed to someone else while I live in the house and enjoy things like a kitchen and plumbing... Not to mention space. But that would leave Mom on the streets or renting a bedroom from a stranger. This way she has an entire house that comes with a built in errand boy/maintenance man/cook/lawn mower/prescription and grocery getter. Plus her rent will never go up and she can live here as long as she wants. If I end up in a bad spot in my 60's I could only dream that someone is there to provide the solidarity and support for me the way I help out my Mom.

VERY creative and clever! When you divide your assets in a divorce, it's daunting to face an insecure future, and Heather has handled the change quite nicely. I've been a divorced homeowner for 28 years -- raised two children on my own and took care of my invalid mother, so could never have managed in her house, but certainly find the livability of Heather's little space most appealing. My own very modest little house will be paid for in another two years, and I hope to be as comfortable as Heather in my advanced old age.

Thank you for the tiny home ideas! I was in a Sprinter van and in a Hyundai Santa Fe. This past spring my niece purchased a 10’ x 12’ she’d for me to convert into a summer home. It’s not insulated yet, but will be next spring as well as have electricity. I’m planning an outdoor shower and a composting toilet.,I love how you get into your loft. I want a loft as well but didn’t want a big ladder. Definitely going to plan something like you have for it.

Being on you own is challenging and rewarding. Your doing a great job Heather living minimally with the things you love and freedom to do what you want. Being around family and watching your nieces and nephew grow and bonding with them and the horses is the best reward. Stockpile your heating wood 🪵 during the spring and summer will prepare you for winter.

Your space is amazing and so are you. One thing that worried me though is putting ashes into a paper bag. Ashes can reignite days after you think they are cold. My husband used to be a firefighter and went to many house fires from when people put ashes into burnable containers and left them by their back door or beside the fire. Get yourself a metal bucket for the ashes and take outside away from your house and add water to them. I wouldn't want you to have the heart break of losing your home.

That’s awesome! You learn fast how happy you can be in a small space of your own. All efforts go to your own goals not the landlords. I moved onto my own land, first time not renting into an 8x8 in short time I added a 8x10 to it and started saving money to build a bigger tiny house… now I’m moved in 320 square feet and it would never have happened if I had continued renting….. note doing this was illegal, the “ system is designed to keep us down”. Over the years 7 people have lived in my old “ cabin” to get on their feet

For such a small space, you actually have a lot of storage. It's a nice set up, you have everything you need. My favorite thing is the black kitty! That makes it a real home. Before you cover the outside, I would use a house wrap like Tyvek. It really cuts any drafts when it's windy and is money well spent. I hope you journal your new adventure! I wish you all the best!

Nice to see a tiny house that doesn't cost as much as a full sized mobile home! It's not enough space for me as I'm six feet tall and have a really big book collection. Still it seems like a good, minimalist setup for someone to live while adjusting to a new life after marriage.

You can adapt it to fit your lifestyle. I built 5 - 10x12 sheds like this. They are in a circle with a courtyard in the middle. One is a kitchen, one a shower (which looks more like a greenhouse cause I live in the desert), one a bathroom, one for storage and one as a bedroom. The advantage here is that they are easy to heat and cool, especially with south facing windows. I have a SilverFire Hunter rocket stove in the bedroom - it uses twigs, branches, scrub brush. I created evaporative coolers which are less than 150 watts and run off solar and cool the little cabins down to 75 on a 115 day. The kitchen one has a mini house wood stove which I can cook on if I need to.

Way to be, Heather. I lived in a yurt and learned to shed the electrical load if I needed to charge, or run a large electrical appliance. I used solar panels and a woodstove for winter heat. Lights were redesigned auto 12 Volt bulbs. Bless you, bless the earth. Do your dance for the world to see.

For almost the same reasons I’ve built inside of a box van so it portable and hidden as a normal truck from outside! The only difficulty was making a door between the cab and box of the truck solely for people don’t notice getting into it! People noticed entering the back sliding door and closing it behind ! It also was chancing someone locking me in but using the normal cab doors nobody can lock it up nor do they think it’s strange getting in! Only skylights/vents so that nobody notices it is a living space anywhere it’s parked!

Living in a van is fine - it's a pain in the ass at times, but I prefer van living over a house. The only thing is - this shed is a little bit on the costly side for me. I like to build with little to no cost... Government - thanks to busy body's has turned into a political community of socialist. I Know that it can be done for less - but less depending on what is available to you. She did well
