The giraffe for the close up encounter is Nabo and he's from Alberta Canada where other scenes in the show were filmed. They orchestrated a feeding area with blue screen material and had several encounters with Nabo to let him get used to the cast and crew and then once he was ready brought in the cameras and other equipment to shoot the scene.

That moment at the abandoned military hospital where Joel confessed to Ellie he wanted to end his life was heartbreaking. But when he told Ellie he saved her and the way they both looked at each other you know you wanted both of them to hug.

I will say something my mum brought up when watching the final she kept saying why and how. She was talking about why we're rushing Ellie to surgery. What if they got it wrong and boom, they just lost an immune person. Why not do more brain scan or tests. And we were then thinking how would they do it. Did they have the resources to make a many vaccines? Would people believe it , how would they get it past fedra ? It many ways the choice was hard but I really don't think the fireflies thought this through at all. I know I know they really wanted a cure but risking it all on one immune girl without mutiple test is a dumb decision.

And I read that if you're in a pandemic and you literally have just ONE immune person and you don't entirely know how their immunity works or how it can be replicated yet -- you don't kill that host without running tests and asking questions. Because when you kill that host and their unknown immunity with them, it's a very risky thing to do. Running more tests, gathering information, and asking more questions would have been smarter. Not just killing them and extracting their immunity without a sure plan.

in the game, they made it clear the doctor was more focused on "being the one who saved the world" than actually seeing if they could make a cure. they repeated that he wasn't sure if it would even work and he didn't 100% know what he was doing. i agree that what joel did was selfish but i also think it made sense. i wouldn't sacrifice my child, especially not for a "maybe" on a cure.

Theres also the fact that there is no cure for fungus even in our year 2023, let alone doctors running on 2003 medical knowledge in a rundown hospital with minimal equipment. It's a non decision because it's not possible

I wish people wouldnt spoil the story for the people who havent played the games. That ending is one of the most effective endings that i have seen in any game that i have ever played. It doesnt end on a happy but on a lie which Joel makes to keep Ellie alive and close to him. Think one has to understand that for 20 years Joel has been deeply wounded by the loss of his daughter and when he found a new reason to live in Ellie he decided to hold on to that reason no matter the consequences to the world around himself.

As an asian-american woman living in the US, our health care is a joke, it actually discourages me to have kids here in the states. I have family working in the health industry and they struggle through a lot of budget cuts and being paid very little compared to the work they deal with. I share your anguish in our health care. Also, yes! Ashley Johnson (Ellie's mom) was the original Ellie from the game! I think its fitting to play as her mother (kinda like passing the torch from OG Ellie to the new Ellie) and her resemblance with Bella Ramsey is the chefs kiss of casting!

@Monica Catapusan, 16:48 I'm going to assume that this wasn't already pointed out, but if you watch the first episode again, just after the time jump and after the wheel the child into the ER, you'll see two posters on the wall explaining the Cordyceps Infection timetable and the symptoms, but if you don't have time for that, here you go: Timetable for complete Cordyceps Infection: -bites to the neck, head and face: 5 to 15 minutes -bites to the torso, shoulder, arm and hand: 2 to 8 hours -bites to the leg and foot: 12 to 24 hours Symptoms of Cordyceps Infection: -coughing -slurred speech -muscle spasms -mood change Anna was bit around or just before sunset and this looks to be late a night, so she still has a lot of time left, really as she isn't showing any of the symptoms. Her wanting Marlene to end her right then an there was likely because she didn't want to think about her loses and what was coming. Marlene had just given her hope for her child and that's probably the last thought she wants in her head before she's lost forever. 17:18 Yes, Ashley Johnson plays Ellie in the game, and this was just lucky casting, IMO as she and Bella Ramsey sort of look like they're related. She looks like she could be Ellie's mother or an older Ellie if they wanted to jump forward into the future, lol. If you haven't already seen Ellie in the game, you'll notice that neither Ashley nor Bella look like video game Ellie; hence, the online hate before the series got started ='( I think the haters have come around--Bella has done an amazing job with her character. Ellie in the game looks a lot like what Elliot Page used to look like to be honest. 17:56 that indeed seems to be the case. I'm not a fan of this retcon. I preferred the game's origin, which was left open. I don't like this origin because it's been done before and that origin is still top of mind. Anyone who's watched the 1989 Blade movie saw something version similar to this. Ellie is immune to Cordyceps the same way Blade is immune to all of vampire weaknesses. They both got their immunities in very similar ways and circumstances =/ 19:44 it's real. 23:26 It's the theme of the series. Yeah, surrendering doesn't matter anymore. Everyone at this hospital knew what was happening and they were on board with what was about to happen. They were all okay with going through with surgery without Ellie's consent, all so that they could possibly like she is now, and her her expense. Yeah, they all got to go. *in Ellie's voice* A'holes! 24:06 While Ellie is expendable to the Fireflies, the genetically altered Cordyceps she's carrying are not. 24:51 We already know the answer. Marlene told us that she didn't tell Ellie. In fact, Marlene lied to Ellie back in Boston. Where do you think Ellie got the idea that she was going to have to give blood and participate in tests? That wasn't something she came up with, but something she was told. Marlene might not have known that Ellie was going to have to die, but she certainly knew that that option was on the table. She needed to get Ellie here because the doctor needed to see what they had before planning what to do next. Now that he had Ellie and working medical equipment he was ready to move forward, and he was ready to harvest what's been growing in her brain since birth. Marlene had no intentions of letting Ellie got back in Boston and she made that clear then. She told Ellie that she had a higher purpose than anyone in that room, and that that was why she couldn't let her go, but still, she didn't tell Ellie the truth because if she had, Ellie likely would have told her to f' off. Ellie has survivors guilt, she blames herself for Riley, Tess, Sam and Henry's deaths. She feels like she owes them something. Had Marlene asked Ellie in her current state, she likely would have agreed to the surgery. Ellie's fear is being left alone, and at present, she's the only one still standing, well Joel is here, but prior to seeing the doctor, he was taken from her too. The Fireflies need Ellie, well, what she has. For 20 years they've been fighting FEDRA and society as a whole hasn't been interested in what they're selling. It's almost as if society already knew that the Fireflies were full of $#!+ from the beginning. Ellie's Cordyceps are a game changer. If the Fireflies could indeed make a vaccine/cure from Ellie, people would be turning on FEDRA in an instant, helping to elevate their agenda, which is replacing FEDRA with themselves. We were told, mainly by the Fireflies, that FEDRA was an evil fascist government making life hell for people, and while that was true in Kansas, that was not true Boston, Atlanta or in Pittsburg according to David--he told us that 17 Fireflies infiltrated FEDRA and tore the place apart. The Fireflies, like David, are wolves in sheep skin. In fact, I'd say that David and his flock were an allegory for Marlene and the Fireflies. Both portrayed themselves as saviors and we steadily saw them for what they really were, monsters. David was going to take what he wanted from Ellie, consent be damned...and that's exactly what the Fireflies are doing here. Yikes! When Ellie learned of the truth at Silver Lake, she destroyed them. What would she have done had she known the truth about the Fireflies? "When we are in need, he shall provide" isn't all that different from "When you're lost in the darkness, look for the light." 25:27 Is lie is wrong, but it was done to keep her safe from survivor's guilt. Ellie is susceptible. Joel's actions and lies allow her to move passed this and live. No matter what happens moving forward, Ellie gets to live and that's the most important thing to Joel right now. 26:42 EXACTLY! Ellie is the same age Sarah was when she died. Joel never got to see Sarah grow up, but he can watch Ellie grow up. 26:56 the best lies are wrapped in truths. A raider did attack the hospital and his name is Joel--he was a former raider. People were hurt...so much so that most of them died. And there was no cure...yet...and there was no guarantee that there would be one. The doctor went a head on his best guess theory. In his mind, Ellie was worth the risk...she's all they had. Joel lied, sure, but so did the Fireflies. Joel's lie, however, is less bad since it doesn't kill Ellie and it creates a space in which Ellie can one day consent to such a procedure if she so chooses and she'll be able to do so with an informed opinion. The game ends the same way, though I feel that it was less abrupt because we actually had to fight like hell to get Ellie out of the hospital and there were still Firefly in the hospital when we left--Joel couldn't get them all. It took a lot longer to get Ellie out than the way it was portrayed here, but that's a video game being a video game and that was a final boss moment, so... Next season should be something! I hope they increase the episode count because there's a lot more story than the first season and I don't see how they keep the same level of story telling going on without an increase of episodes or a split season. Anyway, nice reaction!

The zoom in on the surgeon lol But yeah Ellie alluded that she would want the cure to be made regardless. It’s shown in how all the ppl Ellie loved died because of the virus. Her mom, Riley, Sam. She felt guilty about not being able to help all the ppl she loved and she expresses that to Joel throughout the series. So Joel knew very well that his decision to save her for as not what Ellie would have wanted and that’s why he lied. It’s a big dilemma cause the options are save Ellie or save the entire race and also Joel goes against what Ellie wants. Great story though. Excited for you to watch season 2. It’s gonna be a ride with that story.

So yes fun facts: 1. "Anna" Ellie's Mother is being played by Ashley Johnson, Ellie's in game voice actor for both games. 2. Yes the Giraffe is 100% real, was confirmed by hbo & show runners via social media, they posted the pics & Bella herself confirmed it & said working a scene with a real life Giraffe was the most spiritual experience she's ever had. :) 3. There was another BIG secret cameo in episode 9 by another Legendary VA from the 2nd game but i wont say since we are getting a season 2 & 3. 4. Yes its confirmed by the show runners that, because TLOU part 2 is 5x longer than the 1st game, they will be covering part 2 & splitting it into multiple seasons. Health care worker here! Sterilization and prep is also used to minimize the health care workers as well from any potential infection. I’m this case they might not know what’s samples can also infect them with cord or any other illness which surprisingly takes a while (like an hour plus)

Talk about a morally ambiguous ending. On one hand, I get it. Humanity took away what mattered most to Joel and after finding something that close in Ellie again, he wasn't going to let it happen again. I don't know what it's like to be a a father but I would like that someday and having to put myself in Joel's shoes, I'd probably do the same? Not to mention, the Fireflies weren’t giving her much of a choice in the matter. But then again, neither was Joel. It was still a…..selflessly selfish choice that not only potentially doomed the entire world but robbed Ellie of whatever hope she had left for it as well as the choice to choose. It might be refreshing to some people, seeing them finally be together in this "new beginning" but keep this in mind: it's based on a lie. All of it.

The voice actress for Abby in the 2nd game is one of the nurses in the OR when Joel kills the doctor, so in a way, Abby witnessed her father’s murder. You’re right, in the 2nd game, 4 years have passed and Ellie went back to SLC to confirm that Joel lied. And US healthcare is profit centered, not patient centered. The reason why is the same reason slavery was so popular among the rich European colonizers: it makes them richer.

This is controversial IMO Joel did the right thing in a horrifying but beautiful kinda way for multiple reasons, long story short Ellie's only a child and in his mind his child. Ellie clearly sees them leaving the hospital together, she was never given a choice so you can't say what she would have decided and at this point Joel wouldn't allow the surgery even with Ellie's consent, it may seem selfish but the cures only a 'possibility' and Joel's been through some sht too... maybe he should have been honest once Ellie woke, maybe

Joel's decision to rescue Ellie ain't something he has time to have a think about before making the decision so it's a 50/50 which path to choose spontaneously without thought and he chose to rescue Ellie so sorry bout it but what's done is done, I don't understand why Ellie has to be angry about this

I think the rationale behind charging for skin to skin contact for mothers in U.S. hospitals isn't to make a mother pay to touch their baby, but rather to charge for a nurse to supervise the mother. That still doesn't make it any less shocking to see on a hospital bill, though.

I didn't play But i know complete story I don't know what to say Ellie want live Ellie like to live Joel knows it But she is ready to sacrifice Becuase she is a good kid And joel liked her He can't leave her like that Even it's for saving the world But what world Firefly world If they get the cure What will happend then It can't stop infection It will cure some people And firefly choose that people We saw what happend in episode 4 When people get power they ruined it They choose revange for no reason So what will happen if firefly get cure Probably fight Fedra will take it Same if like firefly they will also choose some they like All that good kid sacrifice will be for some group who's like to rule So i am agree with joel taking her And killing those people for not spread ellie about others And about lying It's bad But probably she will understand!!!
