Starring Dev Patel Produced By Dev Patel Story and Screenplay By Dev Patel Directed By Dev Patel So instead of waiting for Hollywood to cast him, he went straight to boss mode and decided to make his own action movie. What an amazing talent Patel has, I hope Monkey Man pushed his recognition even more.

I loved the controlled chaos and claustrophobia in this movie. Both my wife and I didnt even notice the shaky cam. Being Indian, and having travelled all over the country, it definitely captured the vibe and suffocation of a crowded street in mumbai (real mumbai, not some gated community). There are lush, green and less polluted parts of India as well, but this movie did an amazing job capturing the insanity, filth and corruption of the city

Spent over two years working with Dev creating vfx for this film. It was quite a journey! So pleased it ended up where it did. It deserves all the attention it can get. It's a beautiful film. I find the pace and structure works really well not being the typical formula for an action movie. Its got more depth than most.

I love John Wick, but that franchise felt a lot more "organized" in its setpieces. Monkey Man's choreography and cinematography makes it feel far more violent and frenzied John is an assassin. He goes for clean kills whenever he can. Bobby is referred to as a beast by Alpha and we see that in action. Anything he can get his hands on, he will use as a weapon. The shaky cam, something I usually don't vibe with, is done incredibly well because it really encapsulates Bobby's chaotic approach to fighting. The sophisticated stuff just isn't him - it's why he doesn't even bother with a gun on his second attempt and instead uses homemade firecrackers.

I've heard there's shaky cam in the first half, but personally from what I've heard it's either to show Patel's inexperience or because of the insane behind the scenes problems (at some points they had to resort to iphone cameras because their main ones broke) Edit: watched the movie. There's literally one scene with shaky cam and it isn't a fight. Theres also a disorienting car chase. Other than that you can see pretty much everything that goes on without problem
@Sublybubly
@Sublybubly 26 күн бұрын
I think it’s a mix of both but for the most part it actually helped the movie except imo the car chase scene was a little too shaky, but other than that it was really creative, like for example, when he drop kicks down some stairs it goes into first person for a couple of seconds and it’s really cool, and ye the later fights get less shaky but it still has a some style to it like the early fights, just more controlled, also just amazing movie not too action packed either, only really 2 proper big action set pieces and then in between is some great storytelling

One thing about the shaky cam that no reviewer seems to catch on but everyone in the comments of a review seems to understand is that, it decreases as we get towards the end of the film By the Time Dev becomes a more proficient fighter. The immense shaky cam and editing at the beginning is supposed to represent an unrefined fighter. I assumed that was the thought process behind using such extreme shaky cam despite John wick and the raid being direct inspirations.

When i first watched it, i definitely had higher expectations regarding the action sequences. And thats probably because the trailer focuses solely on that. But after a week, im still thinking about the movie and the deeper meaning dev was chasing. I really feel connected to the story despite not beind Indian or Hindi. Im also really happy to see a brown skinned man being a badass and not some sidekick or it geek like dev mentioned in an interview. I hope this inspires other poc/marginalised individuals to pursue stories that reflect them but also curate to a larger audience. Im excited to see what his next project will be and i hope that it doesnt take ten years like he said this took (the story did at least lol)

I saw the movie today and I liked the shaky cam though my friend did not. I liked the action where every punch felt like it hurt. I loved the depiction of Hanuman... to put this into perspective while Hanuman is a myth, he is also very much idol/god that is worshipped in real life. If you know the story of Hanuman it feels like an extra layer of story is being told. My friend kept pointing out references from the myth to that appeared in the movie. Which further clarified the reason to why these idols/gods/myths are believed and worshipped in the first place. People often preach but never emulate what they preach. Devs character emulated what is preached. Another thing I adored was the hijra community, which is considered the third gender, consisting of the transgender or intersex population. But better known as an inbetween, the balance between the genders/gods consisting of both and neither at the same time. They have a place in Hinduism so it could be funny to see someone scream 'theyre making everything woke' in the up and coming weeks.

I saw this in cinema last night and it was absolutely amazing. I was told it was like John wick, but it was actually so much more!!! The setting was so fascinating and created such a unique story, the characters were compelling even though it's an action movie. The tension was so high, I spent the last half of the film inwthe edge of my seat. Aaaand the action is so gripping and fun and creative and grousome it's honesty such a good time. For all the murder I was grinning ear to ear while walking out of this film. I really really hope it gets the recognition and money it deserves, it's so much more than a direct to Netflix film, and I'm so so happy it was given a theatre release that does it justice.

This movie is exactly what I want from an action flick. Satisfying fight scenes, a well established and motivated main character, a despicable set of villains... All done up in the right kind of frenetic and indulgent cinematography. It's thrilling and it's cool, and you actually get emotionally invested in it instead of just being along for the spectacle. It's lacking a bit of the expert touch here and there, the pacing, dialog, and occasional drop in technical image quality. But those things are so excuseable, as genre conventions and directorial debut. I hope Dev keeps making films like this, because I would love to see more, but I also think this level of confidence could work with a lot of genres. A paranoid thriller, horror, some kind of near-future sci-fi like The Creator... He's got a style I'm extremely excited to see more of.

Absolutely brilliant action sequences that had me giving the stank face because of how gruesome the violence was. Definitely the best part of the film. The cinematography shined bright too, elevating the entire film with beautiful colors, but I will say at only a few moments was questionable. For example, I'm 99% sure there's this one shot filmed with an iPhone, that was maybe 2 seconds long, when Dave Patel was running on top of these roofs. Besides that though, everything else with the cinematography was flawless. Speaking of Dev Patel, he definitely is the star of the film. I loved how he didn't have much dialogue, and when he did, it was never wasted on the screen. It's clear the amount of ambition & passion he put not only into his role, but the entire film itself. You definitely see how well the vision was executed. Now, the BIG problem I had, and to me was the biggest turn off; was how they SPAMMED the backstory through out the film; taking away the momentum of all the suspense build up. Why not just open with that entire flashback scene? Instead of giving flashback after flashback, and then dedicating a WHOLE middle part to explain something you damn near showed entirely through bits & pieces of in the entire first half of the film? I hate that I had to shit on this film, but I'll leave it on a good note.... The ending, although abrupt, was definitely the perfect way to end a story like Monkey Man; you can't convince me otherwise. And there definitely hasn't been anything of this caliber in the action genre as of recently which truly feels like a breath of fresh air. Getting the privilege to see this on the big screen too is a MUST. (4/5 as well)

If you just went for action, you get your money's worth. But you can definitely look below the surface and see a lot of different themes. Of populism, of class (caste) difference, of religious fundamentalism, of the cyclical nature of Hindu mythos, of the strength of community, on duality and gender. It's so much wrapped into a neat package.

Nice video once again but I have to vent some frustration right now. I really hate the way cinema in germany works, with the obsession to dub literally any movie. And if it's movies that won't get a lot of attention its often noticable uninspired as well. In addition to that its hard or impossible to find screenings of movies in their original language because that gets even less ticket sales. So for most movies, even if it's say dune 2, only the biggest cinemas will play it once or maybe twice a week eith original voice-over. And I guess that could still be fine were it not for the fact that i live in ghe cointryside where the nearest cinema is already half sn hour by car. And they never show original voice overs. Most of the time when I want to see OV i drive or drive +take the train for about 1 to 3 hours in one direction, depending on the cinema. And it's somehow even harder to find a monkeyman screening in its original form so i will end up going to one of the 5 total screenings in my local cinema with german dub. And i already know that even then i will be amongst not more than 5 to 10 other people. The interest in cinema has really died in germany, only the predictable, big movies get some attention.
