this truly must be one of his all-time greatest Stone songs it comes out in different ways and different manners hands down capo at the second fret plate and standard tuning get your amp set right and believe me it plays ride along to the track like a dream. I've used his lesson more than once I have this and it just racks right along you can get all the keef parts right on the money

James if you told me the earth was flat and and had to deal with guitars or guitar playing I’d trust and believe you. And yes capo

Why would anyone question King James? I have been playing 40 years. He schooled me many times. He has earned my trust to play it right. Live or in the studio.

I dig it. Thank you. I learned this tune from your old channel around 7 years ago, I think. It's an absolute favorite of mine to play. Capo on the second in standard: if you can't hear that on the record, you need some hearing-aids or something. ✌

I tried playing it without the capo, and the D-shaped E chord is damned tough to pull off when it comes to hitting the F# Sus-2 note....WAY easier with the capo. And man, what a fun tune to rip! Awesome as always JJ

There's definitely a Capo on the album version. Keith does play a lot of tracks differently live compared to the albums versions, others stay the same. Jumpin' Jack Flash went through at least 3 variations before ending up the way he's played it to the present day. Keith has said before many times that album versions are what they are when they're recorded, but when they're taken out on the road some songs continue to grow & evolve over time. In the 90s when Miss You was played live it had a sax arrangement that wasn't on the album version. Lots of bands do it. Personally I love the fact that one song can be played numerous ways. Imagine if album versions of songs were set in stone & were played that way live without ever evolving, not just in terms of how they're played, but also in the way they sound.

Dig your Perth Australia shirt (being a former resident of the worlds remotest city). Have you blessed Australia with your presence James ? Hope so. Perth's a wonderful place if a tad hot in summer.

Again, another insightful review of Monkey Man, much appreciated. More curious about the t-shirt though JJ. Rolling Stones, Perth Arena. How’d did’ya manage to grab your hands on that?? Being from that part of the world myself.....

I still can’t get the grove down on this song! It is deceptively hard to play and keep up!

I capo. My band plays a few songs and I use a capo on the second fret(Doolin Dalton, Drive)and Monkey Man of course and play them in a row
@Jasonsg12105 жыл бұрын
Dave Whitehill from GW also said there was a capo on the record
@bikkk575 жыл бұрын
I agree with you, but personally I prefer it without the capo, and playing the E power chord as opposed to the Low E chord. I feel like I can still get most of the little fills in.
@palacerevolution2000 Жыл бұрын
There's the Kilburn clip of Woody's first solo show, with Keith on guitar. On one tune (it may be the opening jam, cant remember) they go into some of 'Monkey Man' jam w/o capo. Just a cool detail
@littlecreekgaming5 жыл бұрын
Also with Monkey Man I think Mick's voice factors into it too. The Madison Square Garden performance Mick sings a few pitches lower than the original album version, hence the removal of the Capo. Elton John did it in a few of his last tours & Genesis did this too with their 2007 tour, every song is played in a lower key because Phil's voice was deeper & couldn't hit certain notes like he used to.

I play it without a capo. I just play the E as a 5th string root bar chord at the 7th fret. I take my ring finger on and off to create the hammer-on effect on the B string. I’m not saying that’s how Keith did it, but it sounds very close and I prefer playing the rest of the song without the capo.

J-two.. You have a perfect pitch ear..so yea...yea..yea... capo. Thanks man. Sadly I had to spend $1000 on my car...the Gretsch is delayed... aaaarrgghh !

Capo or no capo ...there are few people who can play behind the beat and swing it like Keith can and he never plays it the same way twice. It goes back to the people who influenced Keith and that’s the secret sauce.
@Jah_Rastafari_ORIG Жыл бұрын
Anybody know of an interview(/book about) Keith where he explains his thinking about playing songs so differently..?
@AnthonyBurrito13135 жыл бұрын
I do the capo I think it sounds better with the high notes off the e and b strangs
@MaxRadin2 ай бұрын
Great. Love the chords. Do you reckon Keith could read music when he was writing all this stuff or was he just playing by feel?

So big question is Which version is your preferred ? I don’t like the studio capo. I don’t like playing that d cord. The big E is it!

Hmmm...couldn't the studio version have been done with the E at the 9th fret (i.e., x 11 9 9 9 x), with the lick using the 10th fret on the B and the 11th fret on the G? Try it, you'll see what I mean.
@danieldickerson47855 ай бұрын
lol I just commented the same thing before seeing this
@danieldickerson47855 ай бұрын
Why couldn't the E chord have been played as a partial A-shaped bar, suspending on the b string? I'm not saying you're wrong btw, just curious ion?
@jamesjames92755 ай бұрын
It's the part underneath the instrumental break that's the giveaway that this is how it was done. It's definitely done with a D shape, then A, then G. The suspensions on the D and A chords are pretty clear. But play it however you wish.
