Schools they should have a machinist class like we did 32 years ago where we watched videos or watched a teacher take apart and put back together again a working engine , and then we have to do it.

It's a great example of mechanical advantage. The tight gear teeth on the first shaft don't even cause a hiccup when using the whole drive train.

Looking good! Not unusual for castings not to be what they seem on the (painted) surface - here in the UK back in the early 1800s blow holes and flaws were often filled with 'Beaumont's Egg' a mixture of beeswax, resin and iron filings IIRC, which was hard to spot and fine for cosmetic blemishes but was sometimes used by 'less than honest' foundries to hide more serious faults - leading to structural failures. Always worth looking hard at castings that are taking serious load!

Good morning Keith, Excellent video. I retired 3 years ago from working on heavy construction resurfacing equipment and I miss this type of work. Watching you brings me back to the good times when I was doing this kind of work. Can’t wait for this project to be completed. Happy Thanksgiving to your family.

Exciting to see a piece of history restored. I think about the labor that was involved in making such a useful machine. Today it would probably be done with a direct drive, sun and planetary gear box, mounted to a three phase motor with a VFD.

That press is such a monster. Well suited to the MONSTER sugar cane press. What a project! That A-frame gantry / lift sure has paid for itself ay? Seems to get a lot of use around there. So satisfying to see those ginormous gears moving around! Need a safety sticker or 3 on that limb destroyer. ;-)

@1000stevew6 сағат бұрын
Two questions Keith. On the large pulley what's that bolt in the hub between the spokes? And there are three holes / pins in the hub around the shaft, has the hub been sleeved and they are to stop the sleeve turning?
@RuthlessMindset686 сағат бұрын
I think these are 3 Allen set screws. As you said to hold the cantering sleeve in place.

This project reminds me of the old hoists and winches that my old company repaired for the railroad and steel industries years ago. We found very innovative ways to fabricate special tooling for porta-power rigs to disassemble and reassemble large equipment such as this. If you've ever been around a RR Car Positioner, in a railcar fab facility, you'll know what the hoists looked like, which sat on top.

When making the gesture of using anti-seize (or even plain grease) to keep the surfaces from rust bonding, it is important to apply the compound to the bore as well as the shaft. When you only apply the compound to the shaft, the interference fit between the two components acts like a squeegee or wiper and removes most of the intended anti-seize as the parts are pressed together. The better practice is to apply the compound to both surfaces. The compound you apply to the bore will of course pile up ahead of the shaft as the shaft is seated, but that pile of compound will continue to apply a bit to the shaft as it goes into the bore.
