@GhostSilk8 жыл бұрын
James A Clouder I just don't think that Second Life is the best place to do it. I mean, this is a game where people are either role-playing virtual lives, creating abominations of characters, and doing lots of fucking. Surely, there's gotta be a better venue for serious political discussion.
@f1nger6058 жыл бұрын
+Mundane Merchant But what, exactly, is the "best place to do it"? KZbin comments? Lots of people would disagree with you. There are some people who think that the internet in general is a terrible forum to exchange serious ideas, and yet here we are. I agree that it looks silly looking in, but I suspect that you might be trying to put the residents of Second Life into too small a box. If it were just about role-playing and virtual lives, then why does a safe space for serious discussion even exist? Why does this discussion even exist? Because someone who spends their free time watching other people play video games decided to post a comment that you, a fellow person who spends their free time watching other people play video games, disagreed with. And so a discussion emerged. That's just what happens when large groups of people have the ability to talk to eachother. I've played multiplayer games that have just become a nightly hangout for me. Game servers that turn into "communities" with regulars who all know eachother give rise to conversations that can become more engrossing than the actual game itself. The fact that Second Life has no real format or goal, and is expressly all about creativity and community, means that that sort of thing is more likely to happen and the vastness of the world ensures that it will inevitably happen. So from there, it is not hard for me to imagine that a few "safe spaces" for serious discussions might pop up here and there for anyone who might want to just have a conversation without someone distracting everyone with a comically oversized pizza.
@goldstarsupreme8 жыл бұрын
I mean it's basically a virtual forum with the ability to do audio chat and yeah people have/had silly avatars there, too. Honestly, given the mileage that they were able to get out of places that were completely abandoned, that bit just felt really awkward and not really funny at all.

Here's my take on the whole trolling thing: I've been a mod for a handful of tiny online communities, and like, if someone's gonna come in and be a nuisance, this is the best-case scenario. There's no harm done besides some temporary annoyance or inconvenience, they don't stick around that long, and there's no damage to undo afterwards. Sometimes it can even be kind of funny in the moment, and it's definitely funny when you're looking back on it later. As long as it's not going on too long and none of the "victims" have a stick up their ass, I'm pretty ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ about the whole thing.

Trolling used to be a high-effort activity involving lots of preparation and execution where the reward was confusion and occasionally misplaced earnestness and the more of both you got, the funnier, the better. In the era where "try-hard" is an insult, trolling means rolling in and shouting the worst slur you can think of as many times as you can and any reaction at all is considered success.

@crychan6 жыл бұрын
it definitely wasn’t bullying, but maybe these people took this seriously and they have some issues of their own and used second life to cope? like maybe they kind of wanted to feel a sense of normalcy and control over their surroundings and imagine that they had an average life that isn’t what they’re actually living. even so, everybody is allowed to do whatever they want, and just because you don’t do what somebody wants you to do, it doesnt make you a bully. but also, dogs should be able to vote.

The amount of people who take this game so seriously is hilarious. It's like they have no sense of humor at all. Not just the lady in the "meeting of the minds" but the guy in the plaza place too.

I play a lot of SL and I don't take it seriously like that. I wish people would loosen up, it is fun and again, a game. Videos like this make me belly laugh, it is nice seeing people enjoy it and play around. Just have to ignore those who make it their whole life.
