Nice been waiting for this one. As a GS main here are some tips & notes I took while watching. 1. Another way into tackle or guard tackle is from guard (Hold ZR). Just hold ZR (guard), press X (kick), and press X again. This is the best way into tackle if your weapon is sheathed. 2. Guard (Hold ZR) and Guard tackle also EATS through your sharpness. 3. 16:24 You can actually press A for a "Strong Wide Slash" and go into TCS from BOTH aerial attacks "Jumping Charged Slash (Hold X in air)" & " "Plunging Thrust (ZR in air)" . However, the strong wide slash scales with your charges in jumping charged slash. 4. There's actually one more move that wasn't mentioned that's really good for repositioning forward & slightly left without sheathing. After a tackle, press A for a "Leaping Wide Slash", which can be followed up with a "Side Blow (X)" into a "Strong Charged Slash (hold X)"

A few important things that weren't mentioned: 1. Guard tackle will absolutely devour your sharpness. It can also mess with your TCS positioning because oftentimes the monster will be behind you after the guard. It may be better to use guard tackle with rage slash since you get 360° choice with it. 2. Rage slash doesn't prevent you from being stunned. You can tank all the attacks you want, but you'll get stunned from them sooner or later and be left standing there helpless. Consider building for stun resistance. 3. There is actually a reason to always use rage slash over TCS (outside of speedrunning): you look super fucking cool and all monsters are weak to badass damage.
@felixbamford2282

So much this, also the reason that adamant charged slash doesn't follow on from your previous charge level is because that would give you access to a TCS with hyper armour which would be completely busted. Also He really undersells adamant charged slash in general. it is a bread and butter skill. Use it to initiate so you can skip charge level 1 as well as closing distance and getting hyper armour. It is a incredible skill.

I have a few things that you have missed although they are understandable, 1.) while doing the true charge slash, the second hit does increased damage if you hit the monster with the first much weaker attack 2.) The guard kick, this is important because it does give a good option for right after you have guarded something as it can be a combo into tcs 3.) it’s not just the plunging Ariel attack that goes into tcs and rage but also the charged x move as well this will in turn also have the wide slash do increased damage as well highly raising the damage potential. As a side note I theorize that this is the purpose of hunting edge as you get the closer and damage, charge the Ariel, the go into tsc or rage 4.) there are increased damage values on the middle of the gs as opposed to the end of near the hilt 5.) the wake up setup for tcs and rage 6.) The length of hyper armor frames from a tackle is proportional to level of charge as well not just the damage 7.) a regular tackle can block from all directions while guard tackle can only block things from in front of you as well as how it can eat sharpness, Ik this is just a general quality of guard but it’s possible someone watching might not know this 8.) Rising slash has great KO damage and can easily hit the head, however it’s also good for hard to reach tails like anjanth 9.) A very small one but I don’t know if you mentioned it, just that you can move the direction of your attack slightly while charging 10.) the reason I mentioned #9 is because actually doing wide slash will allow you to readjust the direction of your attacks a lot further I do understand that this is no where near your main weapon and a lot of these can be considered more advanced, but I also think a few of these are more basic and are important for people picking up the weapon to know. Still love the content and keep up the good work.

I saw someone else mention this thought I would put it here, but yes when you over charge is is equal damage to that of a second charge slash This reminded me as I guess a bonus #11 that the charged attacks actually do more damage if you release the button the closer to the beginning of the new charge level as opposed to the end
@Mytho_Logical_100
@Mytho_Logical_100 3 жыл бұрын
Another thing I saw mentioned is that it wasn’t made quite clear the you can change the direction of the Ariel charged attack which again reminded me #12 while not at all important the jumping of a ledge and charging your attack to get back on the ledge is technically an infinite and can be good in some situations

Small correction: you can also go straight into a true charged slash from the jumping charged slash. I find that aerial great sword is actually very good because of this. Because the strong wide slash actually has more damage depending on how much you charge the attack before it, you do more damage overall. I tend to wirebug above the monster, do a level three jumping charged slash, then once I land press A to do a strong wide slash, and then charge for a true charged/rage slash.

@22:00 For what it's worth, Hunting Edge, while a bit unwieldily, actually has another follow-up you missed. When you do Hunting Edge you're allowed to charge Plunging Thrust to level 3 which is good for elemental. I would say it's taken me a hot minute to get used to aiming it as with most things relating to the GS, you can't auto-pilot, but I end up using it a ton when monsters are downed and I'm not worrying with the tail as you can aim it in the air, get a full charge plunging thrust, chain that into the immediate level 3 wide swing, then right to your TCS or whatever you have equipped to the TCS slot. On a downed monster I can usually loop this twice if I've got the 3rd Wirebug.
@oneandonlycara
@oneandonlycara 3 жыл бұрын
To aerial greatsword you forgot the most important part for it, that you can change direction when starting to charge in the air Meaning you can jump off a ledge, charge for the hit while holding back and with that spam aerial attacks because you land back on the ledge and can start another hop with a dodge Regarding guard tackle, since it's a guard move you are only protected from the front, the normal tackle can also be used against something that hits you from behind

Great guide, Ruri! I have a correction, and a couple things you missed Leaping Wide Slash: You missed this move (Press A after a tackle) This is a Wide Slash that lets you reposition yourself. Great if the monster moves around while you're charging an attack. If you perform this after canceling a lv2 or lv3 charge with a tackle, the charge carries into this attack and it will hit multiple times in quick succession. *Correction*: The charged up version of this move is actually the move that provides good elemental/status damage, not the regular Wide Slash, which only hits once. Side Blow: You missed the alternate version (press ZR+X+direction after a tackle) This version lets you change the direction you're facing, mid-combo, which can be a game changer for the GS, which is generally the least-mobile weapon in the game. Also, I know the side blow generally seems underwhelming, but it has seriously insane KO values. A few slaps to the head, and most monsters will be stunned.

As a greatsword main, let me impart a bit more specific wisdom. When it comes to using Guard Tackle, Diablos GS is king. The ramp-up skill Defense Grinder means that you don't lose sharpness when blocking, so not only is it a big free block that pretty much completely blocks damage, with one of the best damage greatswords in the game, it's also free impact damage and a free shortcut to TCS. It also has a bit more blue than Goss GS, the only GS with more damage. I love Goss GS, I think it looks awesome, but Diablos GS just blows it right out of the water. The ability to stay in the fight to a FAR greater degree than Goss just makes it hands-down the best greatsword in the game.

BIG cons for of the guard tackle though. Like Rurikhan said it's like the tackle but longer, BUT unlike the tackle which protects you 360 degrees, the guard tackle only protects from the front. Which for greatsword you're going to be standing there charging a lot and faster monsters will just move around you or behind you. Time the tackle right and you will push through any attack AND monster roar. The guard tackle also eats up a lot of sharpness, while the regular tackle doesn't eat any sharpness at all. I would say the regular tackle is more for people comfortable with the weapon, timing it right to ignore attacks and roars and staying in a spot to charge when the monster goes behind and you know the next movement is going to make the monster appear in front of you or if you have rage slash just turn around and smack em.

So, just a quick talk about Hunting Edge. Hunting Edge does about 2x the damage of an aerial attack performed from a normal Wirebug and recharges quite fast. You'll notice when Rurikhan does it in the tutorial by the time he can roll out of the attack you'll have a wirebug back in order to power sheath. Additionally, this is the only way to use the Charged version of the Plunging attack. Adamant Charged Slash is probably better because it gives you something you cannot recreate with a regular Wirebug jump, but remember you can combo any aerial attack with a Strong Wide Sweep to go straight into TCS or RS. If you find yourself whiffing Adamant Charged Slash, consider going back to Hunting Edge and see if you like it.

I think an advantage of regular tackle is your charge carries over to the tackle damage. I don't have evidence but it feels like it's stronger and can stun faster. Not only that but the charge also carries over to the tackle>sweep combo. The more charge carried over, the more hits one swing is gonna make.
@Revoltine
@Revoltine 3 жыл бұрын
Stuff you didn't mention but kinda significant to the big numbers gang: 1) GS has a sweetspot-sourspot mechanic where hitting with the tip deals lesser damage than hitting the bulk of the blade. 2) TCS deals significantly more damage if the first hit lands. I think it deals roughly around the same damage as Rage Slash if it doesn't but don't quote me on that cuz I don't have the numbers myself. 3) You can delay Hunting Edge's launch, if I'm not mistaken, by holding a button, which could either be X or ZR, highly likely X. Either that or I am confusing this with its Hammer counterpart... 4) You can manipulate the distance you travel with Adamant Charged Slash. Inputting forward places you further compared to neutral/no directional input. 5) A successful Guard Tackle eats a lot of sharpness. Now this is just my opinion, but I really do not recommend it as the sharpness trade off with the security of the move is just a terrible deal and very counter-intuitive to the gameplay of GS which needs to be available during every opening, instead of wasting time sharpening unless you specifically built with that in mind and/or plain uninterested with min-maxing the weapon.
@w1mark275
@w1mark275 3 жыл бұрын
This is also a small detail about guard tackle but since it counts as a guard, you can activate offensive guard with it. This makes offensive guard less meme tier for greatsword as you can activate offensive guard in the middle of your combos instead of having to go back to neutral to block. Not only that, but a successful guard tackle put you into your TCS or Rage slash so you can potentially get the most out of your counterhit.

This might also work better for you in many situations if you prefer guard tackle because it doesn’t move you forward as much. Guard-> kick-> tackle of your choice-> profit.

I personally roll with All 3 of my skills switched to play the Ultra Tank Greatsword. It's outrageously fun being able to just hunker down right in the monster's face and get big uninterrupted charge attacks. The best part is that you can chain it all together! Launch with Adamant Charge, use Guard Tackle at the last second, and then go into Rage Slash to maintain what is essentially just several seconds of invincibility followed by a massive attack. Or just go straight into Rage Slash after the Adamant Charge, since it's still 2 attacks that are basically invulnerable that can easily result in more than 1000 damage. Granted, True Charge Slash is still the king of big numbers, and I often find myself missing it. TCS and Shoulder Tackle are both still amazingly good.

Fun fact about hunting edge: You once in the air, you can charge your plunging thrust to make it a three hit attack that does more total damage than your regular charged aerial attack, making it a little more powerful. It's not enough of a difference to put it on par with adamant charge, but it does make it just that little bit better (particularly for elemental gs).

a couple of notes from a GS aficionado: -the plunging attack from sheathe hits 3-4 times regardless of the height you start it, so it's a very good option to use after a wirefall to quickly attack. from a wirefall, you can barely do a lv1 charged aerial. -hunting edge is stupid. hard agree. it has a couple of merits: it's the only way to do a charged plunging attack, and the charged aerial deals some 15-20% more damage than a standard aerial, to be summed with the initial hit. still bad. -adamant charged slash will travel further the longer you press zl and the L stick. -guard tackle guards ONLY in front of you. regular tackle gives you super armor from all directions. -guard tackle EATS your sharpness like crazy. -rage slash deals 50% more damage if you take enough damage during the charge

More Hunting Edge misunderstanding. Its there for two reasons: - 1 it can be instantly used straight after a level 3 attack lands, throwing you straight into another combo - 2 in multiplayer it offers far greater ability to reposition and attack when the monster is chasing other players Also in this current meta Critical Draw/Punishing Draw is not the thing for GS, so the 'just launch off a wirebug' means you have to sheath first, and then position, and then cast - this is time consuming (and special sheath into it still cost two so is a moot point). You also didn't show that you can use ZR to instantly slam down in mid air, which can be charged off hunting edge. Factor in the fact that this is a fast recharge so if you do combo finisher - hunting edge - aerial charge - roundslash - level 3 it has already recharged and you can hunting edge again. So much misunderstanding about this move because the speed running community playing exclusively single player use adamant charged. As a long time GS player I guarantee you Hunting Edge is being undervalued massively, and is nowhere near as clear a choice as Rage Slash > TCS.
@Kirgoss
@Kirgoss 3 жыл бұрын
I agree wholeheartedly. I've been playing GS for quite a long time as well and I love Hunting Edge. It's even great in melee. If the monster is about to attack, I often manage to still launch myself up with hunting edge, avoiding the monsters attack entirely while attacking myself. This, plus the fact that you don't need to sheath first plus it works even if the monster moves a little out of striking distance, makes it a move that lets me stay on the offensive a lot more. It can also launch one very high up making the ZR move stronger. Even just using the normal charged aerial attack is better from Hunting Edge, since the jump off still gives it a little bonus damage. I also don't quite get what is so hard to aim there, I manage to hit with it almost all the time, it just needs a little practice. At this point I find it easier to hit than with the standard wirebug jump attack (and Rurikhan kind of demonstrated in this video that you can miss with those pretty easily). The alternative is great as well, so one can definitly argue for the other. Personally, I like Hunting Edge more. To me it is like the perfect move to round up the GS moveset, like that one piece of the puzzle I never knew was missing.

 @David Barrett @@Kirgoss Thank you, ever since the beta finding someone talking positively about the hunting edge has been really hard. I personally love the move although I understand why people prefer the adamant charge, it just makes me sad that most people seem to shrug its existence and the move on. The whole "just do a wirebug jumping attack" thing is really annoying because you would never actually use the move when your weapon is sheathed, the point of the move is it lets you do a wirebug jumping attack without sheathing. The standard wirebug moves are setup in which they are intuitive whether you're sheathed or not. (The input for a wiredash when your weapon is out gives you the powersheath which functions very similarly to when sheathed, just like the hunting edge) The "difficult to use" argument is correct in terms of that it's really easy to get hit out of the move, but actually using it isn't. It's honestly not that bad to connect the move with a little bit of practice, I think the problem lies that people want to believe that it's a normal curved trajectory but the move travels more vertically than horizontally. I also find that if you connect the move, you typically want your character to be falling in the opposite direction to land roughly where you hit the monster the first time. The move can be difficult to execute on monsters which are longer than they are wide though, as you can simply jump over them. (tobi kadachi for instance) As for the 2 wirebugs, yea it sucks but it's whatever to me. Like you don't need to always have a wirebug accessible at any time, at least not yet, although it is quite nice.

A lot of the non-charge moves are better utilized for repositioning and timing. A lot of GS gameplay depends on well timed and well spaced moves. If you're serious about using GS and wanna learn the sweet spots start using a GS with yellow sharpness in the training area to get used to timing and spacing. Hunting edge allows you to do an aerial combo string from your ground combos plus aids in positioning. It also lets you CHARGE the plunging slash from landing it. #HuntingEdgeGang Overall this is a great GS guide!

You forgot to mention the wide sweep that can be done after a tackle. In World it used to just be a strong wide slash sort of attack that moved you forward and did bonus elemental/status damage. In Rise it got changed to a multi hit attack where if you tackle out of a max charge slash the wide sweep can hit up to three times. It doesn't give you i-frames or move you as much as rolling out of the tackle but it does let you do some damage if another charge slash isn't an option. Also hitting a Hunting Edge lets you charge the falling thrust, sort of like how sword and shield only lets you do the falling thrust or the multi-hit shield bash with perfect rush or silkbinds. I don't know exactly how that compares to just doing a normal aerial charge, though I imagine it's still about raw vs element/status. It looks cool though, and it lets you do all the same follow-ups that an aerial charge slash would.

"You can do what hunting edge does without hunting edge." No, You cannot. The purpose of hunting edge is actually to bridge your combo from TCS/Rage slash into an infinite combo without the time needed with a dodge/sheath. The 2nd hit does more than a Strong Charged slash and replaces it. I've seen 900 hits off a well timed release, So lets be clear... That is 200+ damage off the initial lunge, 500-900 off the Aerial hit, 300 off the wide slash, then 500-900 off Rage slash. Everyone is underestimating this move. Its far more damaging than Adamant charged slash, It just requires more skill to use effectively. They just prefer the low skill cap of ACS.

Now that I have some time on the weapon in Rise, I've found that I prefer to use regular tackle when I'm using rage slash, which I like in fights I'm less familiar with. The faster tackle and the stability and aiming ability from rage slash pair nicely. When I use true charge slash I pair it with guard tackle, because the guard tackle can keep me on my feet while I'm positioning for true charge slash. I like this combo for stuff I'm fairly comfortable fighting, but don't totally have on effortless farming. On stuff that I'm extremely familiar with (like Rathian or anything else from the older games that I have a ton of hours on) I like tackle and true charge slash together for maximum speed to get into true charge slash. Typically this is done by roll tackling into the second charge while avoiding attack I'm very familiar with, into an uncharged second slash (or another tackle) into the the true charge slash. I use hunting edge vs flying monsters that can be knocked out of the air reliably. I basically never use adamant charge slash, because I would rather use my firebug on a power sheathe, into a roll and shoulder tackle to get to my second charge attack. I'll also use hunting edge when I'm in a bad situation and in that instant I don't believe I can sheathe and use a wirebug, but need to get off the ground. It doesn't happen a lot, but I usually leave hunting edge equipped even in fights where I don't plan to use it, just in case I wish I had it. In most evasion situations though I would use power sheathe into the standard wirebug when I need to escape, because the bug CD is shorter, and I'll end up with the damage buff. I know this was all covered in the video. I'm just giving my take as to why I use the abilities I do and when I equip what.
