I would say it's not, MH3 is not my first game, yet I enjoyed Water Combat, I know it's not the best, but it's nothing that can't be improved upon, what I dislike a lot about talking on it is that people think that it will return the same way it was in 3, like the whole series isn't iterative on the previous and improves upon it, to me water combat has a lot of potential for cool fights taking advantage of the third axis available at all times, if you want an examble, try "Glaciered" it's inspired by MH3 said the DEV, there's a DEMO on steam and I think the controls are pretty solid and fun. Just if you don't want to try it: You have the normal dash buttons, a special button to dash Up or Down, Lock on, more fluid movement. Honestly with wilds introducing a grappling hook, they could easily also implement a similar wide dodge like the LBG from MHR, the one done with wirebugs

The small nuances within the combat of monster hunter makes it so entertaining despite it not changing too much on paper along with the monsters not changing too much either. Each game adds a new level of freshness to it, making the way you approach combat vastly different and effectively the fight loop. I love how they're innovating in ways that doesn't lose the essence of combat previous entries have.

Underwater combat to me seems to be a way to fully flesh out the aquatic monsters, a way to honor them and to show them at their fully power in their main habitat. I haven't played monster hunter tri, I started at generations, but I would love to fight these monsters with their full ability some day.

Gosh I love monster hunter tri, I got it on the wii when I was like 12. The game scared me to be honest. The first mission where Lagiacrus showed up, I was terrified to go in the water, and it took me like 6 months to go back to the game after setting it down and finally push through that mission. Then it was Queropeco, When he summoned another big monster I would panic and couldn't complete the quest for another half a year. When I finally pushed through those levels I put 300 hours in monster hunter tri. I loved the fights and found the underwater fights to be fun. I can't wait for MH Wilds.

Haven't played Tri (nor 3 Ultimate) yet but from what I've seen, it's a really immersive experience. I personally think with the new focus mode of Wilds, Underwater Combat can be done quite well. Not to mention, traversal was already revealed, so I'm kinda excited on what they're planning to do with the combat. 🤩 Also, on a lore standpoint. I find it hilarious that only Moga hunters are called when Monsters who primarily reside underwater are the ones causing havoc. Since from what we've seen of the canon, ONLY they can swim and fight underwater. 🤣

I never understood the argument that some weapons are a disadvantage. So, what's bad about that? Depending on the monsters, different weapons will be more effective. If you suck with a weapon against a monster, or underwater, switch weapons. Try something else that might work better. Half of the fun is preparing for the quest ahead. If you fail at a monster or underwater over and over again, because you can't adapt, then you are not good at the game. Also, hammer is literally one of my favorite weapons to use underwater, especially against Lagia. Just because someone has a "main weapon", doesen't mean that person is forced to use it. When I struggled with Ura, I switched to a water-type lance. Suddenly the hunt was easy. Of course, these days I am good enough to hunt every monster with my main weapon, the Switch Axe, no matter the game. However, when you can't handle a challenge, changing weapons is part of the process. I would love to experience a challenge in MH again, where I am forced to switch to a different hunting style, because my switch axe might not be good enough, or I'm not good enough with Switch Axe against that particual monster yet. Experiencing different weapons is one of the fun sides of MH. You can ofc try your best to face every challenge with the same weapon, but you might get in trouble for doing so, especially if you are newcomer. Underwater combat is simply a challenge, and maybe some people don't like it, because of the "lack of mobility", they simply have not engaged too much with the combat. Heck, on land, you can evade in 3 directions: left, right, ahead. Underwater, you can evade left, right, ahead, down, up, thats DOUBLE the amount of evades you can perform than on ground. If you just try to hunt a bit more underwater, you will see that any weapon can perform good. GS is literally the only weapon I don't play in Tri, because I don't like that weapon. But I see other people use it underwater, and I don't hear anyone complaining. I feel like, people that dislike underwater, simply never gave it too much of a chance. They simply did the bare minimun, and never try to understand it completly. I just recently started a playthough with my GF in Tri. She also didn't like underwater, until I explained to her how to evade correctly, and how to manuveur more easly around. She doesen't love it now like I do, but at least she now enjoys it and doesen't get annoyed when a monster is underwater anymore. In short terms, underwater is just a challenge, a "monster" in it of itself. You either adept to it, or never be great. Hunting monsters, in their domain, and conquering it, in their own home turf, is truely the peak of being a hunter. Hunting a Lagia underwater and winning, basically means, you as human hunter are now the underwater apex.
@Gorguinni3 күн бұрын
I like that conclusion you came to. We are basically the apex after defeating said monster

While I like UW combat and want it to return, I think it’s worth saying that, while certain weapons are at disadvantage against certain monsters, that’s different from certain weapons being at a CONSTANT disadvantage underwater due to how it changes their moveset. It’s like if there was a weapon that just sucked on land no matter what you fight with it, even if there’s still some monsters it does better or worse against.

Isn’t “wind pressure” underwater… a current? You know a bunch of water being moved out of the way much like air would be. I mean water and air are very similar mediums. If a leviathan darted past you, you’d be pushed by the resulting wake of water all the same.

Complete opposite experience for underwater GS and Hammer for me. I’m replaying 3U rn and I switch off SnS and Swaxe to switch to those 2 when it was time to take a dip. My clear times were decreased by about 33% when I did. I don’t mind the camera or slower movement, but in my opinion, the vertical dodges or more movement options need to be more accessible since we are in a full 3D environment after all. I really liked using the c button to lock your movement to the y axis in Tri which they removed in 3U in exchange for the target lock. Another experimental mechanic was the torch system in Tri that I hope they implement again. The pitch black caves needing light sources to see was interesting and with the way the series is moving towards immersive environments, it could be a mechanic to bring back.

Maybe they will bring it back with the portable installment of gen 6. Experimental features always worked better there.

I remember back in Tri (my very first MH game) the underwater combat used to scare me, I was terrified of Gobul too (I think the monster guts quest where Lagiacrus first popped up really spooked me). Took me a good awhile to eventually start fighting properly in the underwater sections, but once I did I did think t was cool (despite frustrations with the jankier sides of it). In terms of how I feel about the mechanic coming back I think it would be very cool. With some of monsters we've gotten in recent years that draw heavy inspiration from underwater creatures (like Namielle) we could have so truly crazy, creepy fights in theory. However, getting it all to work in practice is another thing. You mentioned weapon balance and I feel like that would be quite a struggle with my weapon of choice, the Insect Glaive. A weapon that was introduced after underwater combat was removed. I'm not convinced that it would really work underwater and that the Kinsect half of the weapon would really suffer. It can be challenging at times (depending on the monster) to get all the buffs during regular fights, but I don't think we'd have a chance with a monster that could swim loops around us. I'm not against the idea of it returning if the devs have another crack at it, as I believe they've mentioned in years past that they'd be interested in trying it again someday. But I feel it would need A LOT of work to make it functional and feel balanced across all the weapons, there's also how the buddies would play into it (the Palicos have never been used in underwater combat). It just feels like it might be more trouble than it's worth, trying to get it to work.

Speculation here, but a lot of the pre-release footage for Wilds that I've watched makes me think they were working on underwater combat for Wilds but knew they'd never have it done for February so they scrapped it for Wilds launch. The cast of monsters and some of the leaked post launch roadmap monsters feel like underwater combat monsters. It's way too big of a feature for them to add post launch with Lagiacrus, but I could totally see underwater combat being Monster Hunter Wilds Ultimate's big gimmick. I've never been a huge fan of underwater combat in most games, but with a modern lock on and movement features I think they could do it well. I just like the idea of giving monsters a turbo mode without actually juicing them up with super elemental dark fel explosion energy or whatever lore explanation they choose that day.

i player a little bit of 3U on 3ds (about 7 hours) and my biggest gripe was with the cammera Like how can the Land Cammera be locked to 5 vertical positions, but the Water camera is free, like all the newer MH games? What stopped them from having the nice free cam on Land as well?
@eisschnee26493 күн бұрын
I will always be championing the idea that wire bugs are the perfect mechanic to balance underwater combat; you have a limited resource that gives you the ability to have a quick dodge, but you can’t use it all the time, so the monsters still have a strong advantage.

Tri is my favorite of the old-school Monster Hunters, and I feel like with MAYBE the exception of 4 and 4U it's probably the LAST old-school Monster Hunter. I miss the underwater combat and the spear-fishing. And I did NOT like Sunbreak's remix of the Flooded Forest theme. It completely removes the simplistic, primal feel the original theme had that made it so good and so ominous.

@maiku37413 күн бұрын
Proposing, some thoughts posted under a video of a year ago, that I've commented on a year later.. So like a couple of months ago.... I started with : "No it should not come back, and for simple reasons... I have to say first, that yeah I'm a "beginner" mh fan, world introduced me in the franchise, a better thing could have not happened to satisfy my passion about things that only mh has... But either way, i have my own big concerns... It's not about the technology, not the animations, all this stuff could be improved drastically with nowdays mh team... What makes me not wanting it, it's the concept itself, i don't see how they could make it fun, when there's a a lot of things to consider, for the way the mainline evolved overtime, and the approach it took after world, which was only the beginning, to what they wanted a mainline monster hunter to look like... First of all, what would completely break in underwater is the tempo of a hunt, they could make it slightly faster, through dynamic / smooth moves. And yet the thing would remain a nuisance, making it too fast, would make it not a mainline mh no more, after some time it would become tiresome, bc we would need to take air once in a while, and making hunters have infinite oxygen, is absurd.. They're not aliens. The movements themselves would always remain limited, whatever addition could potentially be fine or absolutely gamebreaking. It's a risky "enviroment" to develop something as "combat".. Other than the fact that it's not our environment. Thing that makes it interesting / challenging for sure, but for those who like challenges, and they cannot cater to only one small portion of the fanbase. Who wants this mechanic to make a return at all costs.. The extreme disadvantages the environment brings to the hunter itself, makes it extremely unfunny, the sense of limitation that makes.. Atleast me feel is pretty big. Some weapons would not work underwater, especially one like GS which is already "slow" on ground, imagine underwater how silly it would look like.. All the "gun" weapons would be useless, i dunno if tri had them working in this place too, but it's extremely silly this too. Hammer would lose all it's impact power, other than the moves would look like slow and inefficient. And so going on with almost every other weapon, every weapon would have problems "working" underwater. Only sns would be somewhat efficient and playable in such harsh environment.... Now listen, since it has been confirmed that there's no underwater combat in wilds, but just exploration as it seems.. I love it, and i hoped for something like this to be made true. Bc i too recognize how important and interesting underwater environment would be in Monster hunter... The amount of monsters and life that could be shown in such environment would be breathtaking... But yet, the combat part... Nah man, it doesn't work. And neither worked well in tri too. Now let's see a potential point in favor, that could make me interested... Focus mode? This mechanic would be really useful underwater.. But then i think about all the rest i mentioned and makes me lose interest pretty quick... I dunno man, imho the combat itself underwater is something that doesn't work" .
