fun fact: teostra nova used to run on a 100-second timer dubbed the "teostra timer". this timer starts when teostra enters the enraged state and if not taken out of this state after 100 seconds, teostra will trigger the nova. even funner fact: this timer goes down while teostra is sleeping so it's entirely possible for teostra to go to sleep and immediately use the nova when you wake him up.
@naefaren3515Күн бұрын

Drome It was a suffix used for pack leader monsters pre-gen-3. Velocidrome, Cephadrome, Bulldrome, etc. But some old-timers still use the term drome to refer to something as a pack leader. Hello, Japanese gamer here! I want to share several perhaps japanese exclusive jokes and nickname! Bazelgeuse has several nickname, and one most famous one is ”Dung wyvern”. Yeah I know that the ”scale” is his body fluid, but its squishy, kinda hot, and it is waste product after all. Also, the community hated him just randomly interrupting the smooth hunt, he might smell like it too do to all the Dung Pods he had to take. The quest for breaking hunter rank cap have some meanings to it too! ★9 Beyond the Blasting Scales is required to go above hunter rank 29. And the target is to slay two Bazelgeuse. B-29. Got it? On the topic of the "Supernova" slang. Almost every monster with a very powerful attack do have official names. But for some reason Teostra's Supernova had become the most iconic For example, Lunastra's "Nova" is called Hellflare officially, Kushala's is called "Supercell" and Nergigante's divebomb is called Heavens Ruin Almost every Elder Dragon's "Big Attack" has official naming but the sources are EXTREMELY obscure

even if Lunastra's attack isn't called "nova", it still is one...any attack that's a complete spherical explosion/shockwave centered around the creature is a nova. At least by the generalized gaming slang definition of the word, the literal meaning is when a star "explodes" but without blowing up completely (in which case it'd be a supernova) So while a simple roar or a divebomb (with aoe impact) are *technically* part of the nova club, you don't see them called that because the terms "roar" and "divebomb" are established subcategories themselves and more specific and to the point. Yelling in panic that "Nergigante is about fly up, then come down to release an impact nova!" isn't as efficient as yelling "DIVEBOMB!!!"...and I personally never want to hear a roar being described as a "sound nova"

Idk if you have heard of alot of slang from 1st fleet hunters but two come to mind. "Head locking" was a big one. You could stun lock Rathian and Rathlos into a static position using lance with precise timing so they wouldn't move and having a greatsword user cut the tail. This leads to "plate runs" as the other term. Rathlos and Rathian plates were super rare and it took a ludicrous amout of runs to get them. So " head locking" these monsters, cutting their tails, carving to see if it was a plate and abandoning if it didn't yeild one in a "plate run" was very common practice for endgame gear in mh1. As a result the troublesome pair which featured both rathlos and rathian was ran on repeat ALOT. Hope these old terms make it in as they hold alot of memories mastering headlocking to beat the abysmal RNG. Love these videos and hope you keep making them!!

@raizekalos572119 сағат бұрын
Maybe not used as much these days but "Headlocking" is a term used for when hunters/speedrunners optimize spacing and damage (usually with GS) to constantly flinch or trip a monster basically the entire hunt flinch-locking it do death, usually by hitting the head hence the name, as its often times a big weak point for monsters. Also might be a bit too specific but "World Tour" or "Around the World" refers to a specific move Rathalos and some flying wyverns did where they jusy fly waaaaaay up, circle the zone you're in way out of reach, then finally come back in with a swoop attack (usually missing pretty bad) it was super common and just annoyingly time wastey in the old games and they've made it so they do this less and less over time, to where I think Rath can only do it in World in his nest.
@magicmaster976913 сағат бұрын
"Around the World" is also the term used for Valstrax's highest damage move, where it flies into the stratosphere, circles around the zone, and then crashes back down in an explosion that you're best superman diving away from.

Two terms which have gotten lost in time with World releasing were: Roman Lancing and Hame Runs. Roman Lancing was a term for special gunlance players. True gentlemen who knew the monster inside out, never hitting their team, randomly turning to a specific direction, charge up and perfectly snipe a charging monster out of the air as if they could read the future. These players are only second to Hunting Horn players in terms of appreciation. Others played the new stuff, meanwhile no matter how weak: The Gunlance continues blasting. (Note: "Nice Roman" is a term for knocking a monster out of the air mid charge) Hame Runs Hame is a ... unique word. But to translate it as ... normally as possible: It means screwing. And no: Not the engineering kind. It is a team run where one player stunlocks a monster while the others completely destroy it. In MH4U, it was common to have a LBG player with full reload put down Sleep, Bomb, Trap, Stun, Para, Sleep, Bomb, Tranq, Pitfall and the monster would be dead within less than a minute because 3 Full DPS HBG players on rapid fire pumped Pierce shots through it. Oh and a bit about the "nth fleet" hunters: The Monster Hunter logo changes with each generation. But one thing remains consistant: You can tell which generation it is by counting the number of dragon heads in the logo. Then there is "THE BOY", which is a pet name given to Dodogama. Now this was supposed to be an early game fight that you farm, but players never did because his armor is ... bad ... and ofcourse because he is the most adorable thing ever! This went so far that with iceborn Capcom introduced a quest: "Can't Bring Yourself To It", where the description reads: We're facing a rather unique issue at the moment. Research in the recess has come to a halt due to a rather rambunctious Dodogama. However, most of our hunters are refusing to hunt it because they think Dodogama are... "cute". Also: Pet the Poogie. That is one of the rituals. If you do the Pet minigame right, the poogie will be happy. Rumors are that this act cancels out the Desire Sensor. Finally: MAD. The MAD is a content format where monster hunters show off their skill. Edited highlight reels of funny coordinated attacks or combos that leave monsters breathless. Often deliberately putting oneself in danger just for the shot. (Like standing infront of Dalamadurs charge atttack and meele-knocking him out during it. Nearly Frame Perfect)

Novae are generally just The Big Move that a monster does when you neglect to knock it out of its charged up state, if it has one, that it then exits out of that state after executing, and supernovae are moves that a monster does when certain conditions are met (invisible timer, health percentage threshold, whatever) that are often, but not always, unblockable and an OHKO (or leaves you with a sliver of health when you have an armor skill like Divine Blessing, only for the status that it inevitably inflicts you with to finish you off.) Lunastra in World is particularly egregious for her nasty habit of having a nova that not only is pretty much guaranteed to fill the entire area you happen to be fighting her in, doing massive fire tick damage if you don't outright cart on impact, but will *wait out the player knockdown i-frames to hit you again as you're getting up to unleash its second flare.* The Venn diagram of novae versus supernovae has, as you said, quite a bit of overlap, but they, generally speaking, are only granted by the CAPCOM dev gods to monsters they want to make difficult, imposing, or The Wall. As such, possessors of novae and supernovae are apex monsters (as in, the Big Bad Guy of a given region, not Rise/Gen 4 Apexes), Elder Dragons, and flagships, 95% of the time.

So, as I see it, a “nova” is a particularly powerful attack that a monster cannot just _use,_ it has caveats for the monster and is determined by the flow of the fight. As of World/Rise, none of the Elder Dragons can use their novas unless “aura” (the ‘Stras’s Fire aura, Kushala’s wind, Nergei’s spikes) is at full strength and it clears it, meaning there is time between it. Essentially, if it’s charging up through the fight, threatens massive damage or forces mechanics reactions and then resets the monster’s threat after use, it’s a nova.

There's also to tenderise something. Weakness exploit in Iceborne, has 30% affinity boost on weakspots and an additional 20% if it is tenderised. So to tenderise something, is to clutch claw to the monster and attack it with your weapon or slap it with the claw until whatever you're attached to gets into its weakened state. Not only does it help utilise weakness exploit, but also make said body part, if breakable, easier to break.

I think at this point you've covered most of the universal technical terms. The only ones remaining is the ocean of memes and weapon specific terms

For the nova definition, I believe novas are given to more explosive moves for elder dragons on a map. Teo's supernova is definitely a nova, but Valstrax's divebomb isn't. Same with Kushala's tornadoes, they aren't explosive. Namielle's electric bomb can be considered a nova because it is an explosive aoe. Like Escaton Judgement, Sapphire of the Emperor, and the Sea of Flame are more just 1-hit ko moves for the most powerful dragons. But yeah, the term is way too gray to get a specific definition

Nice video as always❤. You could do a weapon specific video like withe the chargeblade the ults ar called AED and SAED (i think) or „the big Bang“ from the hammer. But i don‘t know if this would count as slang or just attack names

Narga was on the box art for the US version. I remember getting it from GameStop.

Nova, any wide spread attack that does detrimental damage. Commonly some form of detonation.

4:23 Hi, so I'm a Monster Hunter Stories fan so I actually have an idea of when Capcom may have started using that term. In the first Stories game, you can fight Teostra in the post-game and it can use the Super Nova attack when you fight it (yes I checked there is a space there for some reason) and it has the same animation as in the main series games, so the first Stories game is potentially when that name was first used by Capcom EDIT: ...I should probably finish watching videos before I leave comments

lol tbh, I should have organized those a bit better. I guess the real question is if they named it that before the community called it that, or if its the other way around.... I guess we'll never know

Allan for Alatreon Fatty for Fatalis Nova is all super flashy attacks, I mean: Teostra, Lunastra, Allan, etc The exceptions of this rule are the super attacks what have relevance during the hunt, like the Escaton Judgement (this also call a "Nova" since is like Teostra nova), Emperor's sapphire (Safi's one), etc

In mhw, there’s a mod called hunter pie that does a ton of stuff. Within that stuff, it also tells you the monsters current animation name and it DOES call certain attacks novas

A fan-made mod doesn't prove that they're officially called novas.

Kiranico lists all the attacks, their names and stats. Most of them are more like short descriptions and all of them are in japanese.

I think generally whether something will be called a nova or not boils down to "does it explode"

One correction on Gogmazios being called "Gog", it was not just made up by the community. The more difficult version of Gogmazios' quest, which you unlock by deciphering scrolls, is called "Act of Gog", which is an obvious play on the phrase "Act of God", which is also why the games themselves keep using the pun.

😅 I always call and seen the "sleepbombing" name" Wake up Call" or wake up carl😅 and wall it for the rise mounting, or in my originale language Crisslé dans le murs.

Dunno if anybody's actually mentioned it yet, but a *lot* of the goofy nicknames the monhun community uses for pre-gen 5 monsters is because of hardware reasons. Back in the days of tri to gens ultimate, it was pretty common for people to take turns requesting monsters for the lobby (which were only 4 players large back then). Because of this, youd be typing out monster names pretty frequently. This meant abbreviations and nicknames were commonly used due to a few reasons. For one, each message you sent had a character limit. Also, we had to type out messages using really clunky in-game keyboards. Naturally, because we already had a few goofy nicknames like Steve or Pickle, some of the abreviations evolved to become joke names as well. Nowadays, the funny nicknames continue as an extension of this as a community in-joke, and will even be extended to newer monster like Bazel's B-52 nickname.

Like the dark souls game there is no team specifically for what is basically the .5s of each generation.
