Noticed something important. Once you get to spirit level 3 you gauge gets full and then slowly fades away. Attacks don't fill up or take away gauge. I think it is unlimited but drains away unless refreshed. 4:27.

Yeah it seems to be red drains quickly but gives infinite spirit. I speculate that the helmbreaker follow up is a way to dump extra levels of spirit gauge for more damage so you could helmbreaker back to yellow, or you could full combo all the way back down to white. As for the "counter" stance, I wonder if it might only be possible after spirit 3 and that follow up was just a normal spirit slash. We never see it, but I wonder if you can also fade back with spirit slashes. Needless to say, i'm very hyped. I personally think rise LS is the most fun weapon in the series because landing ISS is just more fun than anything else, but I'm definitely excited to have a lot of new moves. I hope they keep the timing from iceborne but the no gauge cost from rise for ISS and I also really hope you can resheathe after a successful one.

Lance main here. I used to play with someone who used longsword. If I'm really that worried about flinching then I'll put on a single flinch free gem. If I get flinched I can immediately do a side hop to get out of the way, or if I'm facing the longsword's direction I can actually use counters to trigger counter attacks off of their slashes. Playing with other hunters is its own sort of skill that you learn with experience, and I think removing flinches or other friendly fire attacks out of the game would make the game worse. I get it though, it's a meme with a nugget of truth in it (or entire tendies of truth depending on who you're playing with).

i mean thats kinda the interesting and fun aspect of these games. thats why theres so many different weapon types, you are meant to find your groove. personally im a multiple weapon guy, but its cool when various people, especially content creators gravitate towards their individual favorites. thats why i hate this aspect of the community among certain individuals, of shaming and ridiculing others for their choices. and this doesnt apply just to weapons but also armor sets etc.

I really love how they step up another level with their monster models and physics - look at how those skin/bodyparts bounce with each strikes like in souls games (and probably the higher hzv they will be more visible - like when hunter hitting the head vs the legs), look how those fur and cloths move with each hunter's movement...

The only thing that bothers me a little is that there seems to be no impact effect like blood splashes, sparks or particles flying off the monster as you strike. It might not be as noticable in during gameplay with all the sound effects and numbers popping up but I think it would look way more impactful if those were there.

Do you really think the monsters react to each hit like you described? I am having a hard time spotting that detail. I've been playing the Monster Hunter phone game which has that effect with the twitching body parts and I really really wanted to see that for the main games but I just can't see it here in Wilds. It's the one thing I'm constantly looking out for but it just looks like any other MH game to me. Do you have a time stamp where it's the most obvious to you perhaps?

I think what has me the most hopeful for Longsword in Wilds is actually how the other weapons are being treated. We have clash attacks as a new defensive tool, Hunting Horn has a new counter move and Gunlance has guard-counters now. Longsword isn't the sole i-frame counter-focused weapon anymore, which to me says it will be allowed to shine more in it's niche. In Rise, it felt feather-light and impactless, counters were incredibly easy to perform and it's damage was very good. It was too easy to have identity. I say this never having played Longsword longer than a dozen hunts or so in each game, but I have kept up with changes across all 14 weapons and Longsword has one of the most interesting recent histories. Excited to see where else the most popular weapon in the game goes.

Hoping its greatsword again. Greatsword fits being the best weapon in the series more than any other and is fairly easy to learn and is much more committal than say the mindless longsword. Greatsword gives you a good set of tools to become accustomed to monster hunter combat.

Greatsword is so amazing because it's a simple weapon with a relatively low skill floor but a very very high ceiling. The changes we've seen to Longsword make me think they're doing much the same thing, keeping it the easy-entrypoint weapon it's been recently but raising it's ceiling by making peak performance less easily achievable. ...And I just realised you were talking about it being the most popular weapon. Man. Not gonna delete all that cause I believe it and I think it's a good point to make but sorry for the misunderstanding lol

At the end of the day players will play what they find fun and mindless fun will always be more popular than "maybe it'll be fun after I learn it, but also maybe not" kind of weapon, due to sheer first impression alone. I agree GS will give good fundamentals, but if you can't even get the ones needing said fundamentals to use it then there is no way GS would be the most popular weapon.

4:26 these might not be spirit slashes as you cannot hear the spirit slash sound effect for them. They could be regular attacks changed by the red gauge.

Yes, those are just regular attacks. Spirit slashes drain the spirit gauge, and these attacks don't. Which would suggest that your regular triangle and circle attacks change into these attacks.

I’m not so sure, the Spirit Gauge wasn’t full when they didn’t reach red yet, but then maxed out and started slowly depleting the very moment they did. It seems being in red is timed and can’t be extended until you drop from red. I wonder if it’s like from classic MH and you lose all your Spirit levels and you have to build it all up again. Probably would balance the weapon out, though, since gaining Spirit levels is easy as hell if you can counter a decent amount of the time.

So normally, regular attacks fill up the spirit gauge, which isn't the case here, and spirit attacks are supposed to deplete the gauge, but that isn't the case here either. So what is it? If the gauge is unlimited and slowly drains away, it's reasonable to assume that a regular attack would not refill the gauge, just as it would probably be alright to assume that spirit attacks would not deplete the gauge either. The main issue here is that these do not look or, more notably, *_sound_* like any of the other spirit attacks showcased in the video. I still believe this is a new standard triangle combo you get when the gauge is red, allowing you to do more rapid, fluid attacks for a period of time.

I think it was already revealed that there is going to be something akin to demon mode that's more focuses on dodges/maneuverability so that'll be interesting to see. I don't play dual blades but something where you have to time inputs to do really strong attacks similar to Sword n Shield's 'perfect rush' would be really cool, but I'm the kind of person that likes deliberate timed inputs like that over button mashing so maybe it's not a good fit for Dual Blades.... ... Maybe an attack like Switch Axe's elemental discharge where you rapidly tap the attack button to attack faster and faster would be more fitting for dual blades.

it plays kinda like earth style Ls from frontier where you can do side swipes in between your spirit combo to continue the chain while repositioning, and the focus mode attack is like the finisher of extreme style Ls where it hits the monster with a quick attack and a multi hitting explosion happens that does huge dps. also, the counter stance looking animation kinda looks like crit juncture hunter art from xx/gu, but it also looks like the parry/guard point animation of frontiers extreme style long sword

And yet it still feels relatively grounded compared to what you'd likely get from the MH team that does the handheld games. The two most 'anime' things I see here are the focus strike where there's a dramatic delay between when the attack connects and when the monster actually gets hit by it, and the attack where the hunter swings twice and there's about 12 slashing effects on the screen like they're moving so fast their attacks can't even be seen by the human eye.

In MH: Sunbreak you get Long Sword that is basically a Zweihanderdle which is a type of great sword, and Great Sword is a weapon type in Monster Hunter. Also the LS in Monster Hunter would not be called a Katana it would be a Nodachi.

No those are definitely spirit slashes. I think when you get to level 3 the spirit gauge is unlimited, you can see that those attacks are neither adding nor taking away Spirit Gauge explaining why it doesn't have the glow.

For the spirit combo, instead of getting different attack strings, I think we will get a combo shortcut into a spirit roundslash (the attack at the end), but in the end we can only speculate about it until the demo drops :(

-The new Spirit combo I bet is done just by simply tilting the joystick in the direction you want at the same time of the Spirit button. -There's a flash at the end on one of the Focus attack. My theory is that it could be similar to Special Sheath in Sunbreak where you can charge it and consume your Spirit Gauge for a stronger attack. -The last move's wind up animation is the Sakura Slash animation then it could have another function and not the multi hit damage.

Looks like a lot of the weapons have gained tools for adjusting positioning while attacking. GS can move and aim while charging, SnS got sidestep and slide attacks, GL got blast dashes and now LS can inpuit directions during spirit slashes... wonder how that will be reflected in the new monsters' movesets.

it seems that the entire moveset layout has been updated, with new ways to end strings, new moves depending on the gauge, smaller blade but quicker and more precise movements, the red gauge not being a maintainable state, more directional control, moves from 4U/W:IB/R:SB/Online... it seems like they brought the speed in rise to the intent-oriented playstyle of previous games (as opposed to simply counter spamming), and took power away from the range and mobility of the weapon, which were secondary strengths that didn't really reward mastery of the weapon I don't know how I'll be able to wait another year or so

The problem with World Iai slash was that the damage you did was not as optimal as helmbreaker and just doing your regular routes, meaning that on top of the penalties of missing it, it just isnt worth using most of the time. Rise quickdraw was probably a little too good, but i'd rather have that than just useless.

4:25 Are you positive these are spirit slashes? Each time you use a spirit slash there's a distinct sound unique to initiating a spirit slash attack that almost sounds like the typical 'audibly shiny unsheathing a sword' sound. Go re-watch the other instances of spirit slash attacks and you'll see what I mean. The attacks here do not feature that sound effect. I think what we're seeing in this section is just an entirely new 'standard moveset' that you get once you have red spirit gauge. So, instead of getting an 'overhead, overhead, poke, uppercut' as your triangle combo you get something much more fluid with more attacks per input. 3:07 You mentioned that he does spirit slashes here but interestingly spirit slash 2 is a retreating double slash, so not only are there standard, forwards, and sideways spirit slashes but also ones where you're taking steps backwards.

I was surprised to see gunlance essentially getting fade shots and fade slashes. I wonder if it'll be the case where elemental longsword is more viable than from world/iceborne (didn't play enough rise/sunbreak to be familiar with LS meta for that entry), but will just prefer the enhanced spirit slashes over the helmbreaker which I imagine would still be best dps route for raw.

honestly, so far great sword has had the only good looking Focus Attack, long swords kinda has the whole "delayed impact" gimmick that most iai slashes have, but just in a really unsatisfying way

i do hope you can change some setting in the impact effects. more than any other weapon so far it became evident with ls how lacking in impact the effects seem to have, it feels like you are barely even touching the monster.

There's no way you're a SnS main that isn't interested in most of the other weapons. SnS is usually a jack-of-all trades. With the exception of the busted Wide Range of Iceborne and the KO king it was in base MHR, it usually is very good at everything outclassed on each specific thing by other weapons. That mentality usually lends SnS fans of being the hunters that use like 5-8 weapons instead of 1-2 like everyone else.

I was worried that LS will be change for new players to be new ez weapon cose they saw how popular it was but Im happy that they double down on complexity and skill .

Apologies if this is a bubble burster, but LS has been the "ez" weapon that new players gravitate toward for a very long time now. It is the most popular weapon by a genuinely hilarious margin. This isn't a problem with the weapon, as its accessible yet deep moveset makes it an excellent choice for a developing player.

I know longsword is controversial, but a strong, easy weapon for newbies is a really good way to help people get into monster hunter.

The issue is Longsword is usually the strongest weapon in the game outside crossbows which leads to every other weapon feeling pointless not to mention flinching others while on a hunt being common and the mains being entitled pricks telling everyone to sacrifice a slot so they can mindlessly swing their broken sword.

@@BBBerti I was talking about crossbows and guns for speedruns. IDK about how much things changed with sunbreak for Rise but the ranged weapons tend to be busted for speedrunners. I aint spouting nonsense. I am well aware of the series. Or are you a buttthurt longsword main who hates seeing all the hate your main weapon gets? In that case sorry but your weapon is mindless often and the rework in world has led many of you to feel entitled to forcing teammates to have flinch free to avoid being flinched by you when you could be more aware of your active hitboxes and play by your role.

"The only weapon that matters" and "The KING of wepons" ... I believe you confused LS with Hammer. Jokes aside LS hopefully isn't nearly as good as it was in World and then Rise. I always felt that the regular counter was way to generous when it came to i-frames and the damage was way too good for the comparitively few downsides the weapon had. From what I gathered the LS in Sunvreak was actually balanced properly or rather other melee weapons got buffed masively to be on par if not better. So hopefully it's more like that again or generally better balanced.

Oh? Sunbreak made others better? Longsword probably was still king. Can't imagine the changes were enough to dethrone it. Longsword since World has just been and overpowered and boring weapon since its rework.
