The bride who wore a pink wedding dress and had all the bridal party wear white so that her monster in law couldn't successfully bully her was a genius. Absolute genius! Also it sounds like such a beautiful wedding.

There’s no one way in hell I would have continued with that marriage! I probably would have approached the family sitting at the table, announced that I heard their conversation, I didn’t appreciate it, and I was leaving. Leaving the family get together AND the marriage. There are just some things that I cannot tolerate. This would be one of them.

If I ever overheard my MIL AND husband question why I came to a FAMILY vacation, I'd walk over & say "don't want me here? Fine, I'm gone in the morning. And the divorce papers will be in shortly after" It's a FAMILY vacation, the spouses are there too!! It's clear that not only does the family not like her, but her OWN HUSBAND didn't even want her there! The Fuck!? "They'll warm up to her on their terms" WHAT TERMS!? How are you supposed to get to know your in-laws if not for family functions?

We got pregnant about 4 months after we got married and she said I did it on purpose and that he should take me to “get it taken care of, so I don’t ruin his life”. 🙄 And still to this day she doesn’t like me, even though I try to be nice to her.

And the fact that she didn’t immediately stand up for herself, but rather quietly took their beat down and ran away, then allowed her husband to gaslight her into taking the blame. She should have walked right up to that table, confronted them and said she was sorry she even came along since it appears to be such an inconvenience for them. THEN left. Thereby, making them take accountability for their actions right on the spot.

My MIL didn't even go to my wedding and then 6 months later when my husband called to wish her a Happy Mother's Day she berated him for THIRTY MINUETS for "letting me" get my nose pierced. After the call he came into the living room with a shocked look on his face and I asked him what happened, he told me. He doesn't have a great relationship with his mom in the best of times and he's a very non-confrontational person, so I asked him if it was ok if I handled it, he nodded and handed me the phone. I called her back and very politely and firmly informed her that my husband doesn't "let" me do anything, that I am my own person who makes my own decisions, and she just yelled at her son WHO WAS CALLING TO WISH HER A HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY for something he had no control over. I also told her that if she EVER had ANY issues with me she could COME TO ME and talk to me about them because we are both grown ass adults who don't need to go through intermediaries like children gossiping on the playground. She tried to do this guilt trip bs of "well I guess you just don't want to have anything to do with me" and I told her that she was still his mother and he was still going to try to have a relationship with her so any contact that gets cut off will come from her and will be her decision. I ended the call with "You're on speaker, now apologize to your son for yelling at him and thank him for wishing you a happy mother's day" After she did that I said have a nice day, and hung up. 18 years of marriage later and we haven't had any more MIL drama.

My fiancé is also a gentle soul who would rather fall on the sword than face or start any confrontation, so it is my honor to be his "detached backbone." We've been together for 2.5 years, and now all I have to do is look at him whenever we're in a rough situation, and his expression will either harden because he feels stronger with me, or he'll shoot his eyebrows up so I can deal with it. Either way, I love helping him and providing support. Ah, love.

Good for you for standing up for yourself and calling out MIL on her abusive behavior toward her son. I feel for your husband. It’s hard for adult children from toxic families to set boundaries and stand up for themselves: they were never taught how. I hope that, in time, your husband can learn from your example and put his own foot down. The first time he does it, he will probably be terrified, but it gets easier with practice. Until then, excellent for him that he has your back. As long as you have a united front, you’ll both be O.K.

OR he has things he's hiding from his wife so he intentionally keeps a rift between his family/friends and wife so she won't find out. Either way, dude is shady AF and she should really find out what kind of person he truly is. This is where I would invite family members one on one to brunch, dinner, etc to let them get to know me for me and slowly sabotage his plans. All while setting aside money to leave if/when I discover who he truly is. If it's fixable, I'd have money set back for a nice girl's trip or something for myself. lol

My best friends mother-in-law was horrible. She insulted every choice my best friend made and had her in tears constantly, telling her she was selfish for not taking other people into consideration. Unfortunately for her, both sides of the wedding party, male and female, were made up of our really close friends who doted on the bride and weren't happy with her crap. When it came to the rehearsal dinner ( which typically is paid for by the grooms family) monster- in- law said she didn't trust any restaurant to get things right and she would plan it at her house. She went ALL OUT, including a huge prime rib carving station. It was like she was trying to show up the brides family about how things " should be done" Imagine the look on her face when the entire wedding party showed up, informed her that it was Good Friday and we were Catholic, and none of us could eat meat. We probably could have eaten sides but we enjoyed just nibbling on bread and stating loudly that it's too bad she didn't bother to think about anyone else.

To the woman who overheard her husband saying she was pushy and invited herself to the family get together she's not an ahole. I was married for 22yrs and my now ex husband did exactly the same thing. He never spoke highly of me to his family and when he knew there was a family event he wouldn't tell me and then lie to his family saying I refused to take off work and go to the event. He especially did this around the holidays and if by some chance I was off work and went I was told by him his family really didn't like me and I shouldn't interact to much with them. I also didn't see the gaslighting he was doing. Eventually our marriage ended when he texted messaged me he wanted a divorce, I told his mother that he was staying with his girlfriend after he lied to her about staying at a work buddies house, then when he brought his girlfriend to Thanksgiving and Christmas while we were still married his family finally realized what the tea truly was and even after all that I was still labeled the bad person for divorcing him. She needs to run away from him and his family and start over. It won't be easy but at least the gaslighting will stop and it'll improve her mental health so much

I was in a relationship where all of a sudden, his friends and his family started keeping their distance. Turns out, once he was done in the relationship but just didn't wanted to break up and be alone, he would complain about me any chance he got. He even talked to his friends about planning on breaking up with me on my 21st birthday and that's why they stopped talking to me about a float trip that was happening around the same time when both him AND I were initially invited. He planned on breaking up with me, having a 17 year old spend some weeks with him/maybe move in, AND to go on the float trip with her. He thought that him and the 17 year old were going to become a couple and when they didn't, that's when he called me up and gave me an ultimatum to move back in. I did give in and went back, but that was waaaay before I realized all that he did. A year and a half later, I finally left him, and then him and his mom (who was living next door) was then starting rumors that I was abusive since he was pretty abusive to me other than the manipulation and gaslighting. The worst decision I could have ever done was give him another chance when he gave me that ultimatum, but then the best decision was when I finally did leave him.

My dad is very similar to this with me and my poor mother…but his family adores us and nobody ever believes a word he says, so it’s just irritating because he fails to be manipulative. Luckily he wasn’t like that when I was younger, it’s more of a product of him passing the mid-life stage without having much time to waste his days partying and being irresponsible the way a lot of his male relatives did, so when he started doing it, I was old enough to tell everyone the truth and have enough of a honest reputation for people to believe me, because my mom is very non-confrontational when family is involved.

If the genders of the parent and child were reversed, many people would not be nearly as hostile to the victim. Not being accusatory to anyone, in a lot of cases it's just a manchild who's too pampered to let his convenient mother go. But it's something to keep in mind.

Omg the pink dress one was such a beautiful way to handle this situation!! It completely disarmed the MIL because she couldn’t raise a proper stink to anyone who was not the bride because then she’d be revealing herself as a total asshole, it gave the bride memorable and unique but still beautiful wedding photos, and it was a fairly non-confrontational solution that still got the point across to the MIL. I only have a couple friends who are vegetarian but in case they drop by I want them to be able to eat more than the chips and veggie platter. Plus, I love veg as much as meat and a truly well done vegetarian or vegan dish is very yummy. I dont get why peoplecfeel the need to push meat on them. But I do know a couple vegans that walk around with the old attitude issues and try to force their views on everyone around them. Thats not right either.

When they've always done things a certain way, been taught to value certain things, then someone comes and does things differently, it must feel threatening, I guess. Even if it doesn't affect them directly, it questions them. And frankly, most people don't like to question themselves. I WOULD ask my mother to explain why it took her several years to stop offering meat to me sarcastically at every meal, but I'm not sure she has the capacity for this sort of introspection. She would take the question as an attack and a reproach, instead of a genuine will to understand her thought process. I'm not sure she understood mine, even though I explained. My mom wore a white, low cut, mid thigh spaghetti string dress covered in sequins to my wedding. It looked like a homecoming dress for teenagers. I've told her for years (since we can't change time) that it was okay but the more I hear these stories it makes me question choices we both made. Oh, and FYI, my wedding was word of mouth on the roof of the courthouse. My only bridesmaid to show up, rushed there from work in jeans, a tank top and flipflops, my wedding was CASUAL. I had the word of mouth option because I had already put my foot down on some of the invitees, I refused to have people I'd rathered throw off the roof at my wedding. So I put all the reception money into a fancy honeymoon. We've been married 16 years.

I actually know someone who found out early on that her MIL was planning on wearing a fancy white gown to her wedding....so she did the same thing, but took it a step further. (Wish she would post it on reddit because it was a thing of beauty!) She picked a very soft aqua coloured gown for herself, had her bridesmaids in white, and told the female guests on her side (and the trusted ones on his side) that white was the preferred (though not mandatory) colour. The only women NOT in white were the bride, the MIL's sister, the FIL's wife, and the groom's sister. Every other woman there, including MIL, were in white. The groomsmen wore white tuxes as well. (Groom wore classic black) She was just drowned out in a sea of white. It was epic!

I’m not generally an advocate of giving up on what should be such a serious commitment as marriage, but that kind of thing takes two. He obviously didn’t take his vows seriously. Excluding her from FAMILY vacations just says he doesn’t see her as his family. She shouldn’t have to have asked to be included in the first place! These people who expect or condone it are all narcissists! She will never be considered his equal if she isn’t already on day one. Kids don’t deserve to be brought into that kind of disaster either. We ALL hope she breaks free and finds a real man who doesn’t just include her in his life, but makes her his life. She should be his main dish, while his family are the sides. Extended family is important, but families should respect and welcome those brought in by marriage. You don’t take one without the other, with gatherings. Both or neither. Package deal. Even if you don’t like them for a legitimate reason.

For one, he didn't realize I was a bridesmaid and got super excited that both of his sisters were in the bridal party. He was also double checking where he should park and when to arrive. The sweetest part though was he was concerned about wearing a white button down shirt to a wedding and couldn't find another shirt he felt was nice enough. My cousin and I reassured him that all of the groomsmen would be in white shirts and it would in no way be inappropriate, and not to worry about finding a tie unless he felt like wearing one. What kind of man makes his wife ask to go on a family vacation? Especially since clearly other spouses were there. That story was so disgusting, and I hope she runs fast! Once you are married the expectation is you are a pair, unless specifically planned otherwise. There was not one redeeming, or justifiable thing, on his side. I loved the way the monsters in-laws got their comeuppance in the dress stories. How can these women not understand by now that it just makes them look desperate and disgusting to behave like this?

I'm a bit conflicted on that story, I guess I've seen the other side of the equation growing up... in that case my mother was usually the one who made everyone incredibly uncomfortable not that dad ever stopped her coming for trips to his family's farm but she really didn't like anyone and made that very clear through her actions. Because she made everyone uncomfortable and angry and family members stood up to her she decided that entire branch of the family was no longer our family and we lost many opportunities growing up unable to see dads family. I'm making the effort now as an adult to build relationships with them but I still get upset at the lost opportunities growing up. I'm usually in agreement on who the asshole is but in this case I think I want to hear tur husbands version of events.

If OP is so awful that she can't be around the entire rest of the family, then it's not much of a marriage is it? I hope you can reconnect with your family. But they did not snub her, it was the other way around. Some people are just toxic, and they have no qualms about hurting everyone around them with their poison. Who knows? Maybe the story is fake. However my husband (now ex) would frequently go out to dinner with his parents, and his siblings, and the sibling's spouses Just not me, and I would find out after the fact. My ex would also accept invitations to parties and dinners at friends' houses and go by himself. I would find out because I would run into friend later who would say they missed me at the event, and hoped I was feeling better? WTF?? Tried marriage counseling. Didn't work when the counselor suggested that HE may need to change a few things.

When I was in 6th grade, I was, at what I thought was, my friend's place. It was a small party of her close friends. I have always been shy and unsure of myself. I always felt almost unwelcome when they invited me to anything, but would ignore it cuz "why would they invite me if they didn't want me there?". Should've listened to my intuition. I went to the washroom and on my way back, I overheard them talking about me. Saying I'm pathetic, ugly, no one liked me, etc, and laughing. One of the guys there asked why I was there if they didn't like me. They said it was because of how clueless I was and that they can get me to help them with homework or yard work (I like helping people I care about). The guy called them all nasty bitches and told them that he is gonna tell me everything. I was about to just make up an excuse and leave, but I felt a bit better cuz a few of the people there defended me and called them rotten bitches. So I walked around the corner (doing everything to hold the tears back) and told them not to bother, I heard everything. I told the ones that were talking shit to fuck off and left. I didn't go to people's houses or anything I was invited to again until my Senior year in HS. Even now, I still worry about people secretly hating me or making fun of me. I've never had many friends after that. I still get taken advantage of by people I thought were my friends. I can't help but think it's something about me, but I dont know what. Be kind to people, if you don't like someone, don't pretend to like them. Something you think is no big deal or funny can seriously harm someone else. Also to people pleasers: you can't please everyone. If someone you care about and will go out of your way for, but they won't do the same for you, cut them from your life.

My favourite MIL wearing white story is the one where the bride was so confused as to why it was a problem then the MIL would wear white because whilst the grooms side were Caucasian, she and her family were Indian and they were having a traditional Indian wedding. MIL did not bother to consider that it might be different and was furious to discover that she did NOT upstage the bride in white, because in an Indian wedding brides in fact wear red. She also couldn’t say WHY she was mad because then she’d look like an idiot 😂😂😂

My mother in law wore white to my wedding. When she asked me how she looked, I told her the dress was pretty, but it was a little odd that she chose white; I asked her if she knew that it was typically not wedding etiquette to wear white to a wedding. She responds with this “Well baby doll, I’m sorry you feel that way. You’ve been divorced before, so technically you’re not supposed to be wearing white either. I would’ve chose red for you, personally. Suits you better.” I simply smiled, thanked her for coming, and prayed that she would get all the karma that was coming to her. Witch.

Mother in law is a huge part of the reason that we married at the county office with my family (supportive and loving) only. Just one quick example, when my husband and I started dating his mother (who I had known most of my life) smiled and said to me "I didn't know black girls could have hair" 🤷🏾‍♀️ TF? For some clarification, my husband is mixed (mother white, father black) she has like 9 kids that are all mixed. Yet she says disgusting things like "I like everything black my men my kids and even my front door" which she painted black. At the same turn she tells her daughters they are white like her and she tells her sons not to deal with black women, because "they" always hated her for having black men. I have assured her that no black woman had ever cared. Didn't matter she proceed to disown her son that married me after he wouldn't take her advice which was to only use me until he could find a good (YOU GUESSED IT) white woman. 🤦🏾‍♀️ So I fell sad that his siblings have sided with the mother but I love that my family has embraced my husband. So he's not running short on any love ❤️💜

My bridal shower was set up by my MIL, she invited a whole host of people I didn't know all to show off the house that she bought and had graciously "allowed" (forced) her baby boy and myself to rent after our wedding. I helped set up the entire thing, everything was done to her standards because I had long since surrendered planning to her and her daughter in law who had railroaded me out of being an active participant in my own wedding. The day of, I had picked out a sweet little white cotton dress, pearls and heels. She told me that I would get dirty setting up, and no one would be dressed up anyway, so I should just change into jeans and a t-shirt. Fast forward an hour, I was sweaty, stinky, my hair was a mess, makeup melting and guests started to arrive... and every damned one of them was dressed for Easter Sunday. Dresses, hair, makeup, most of them in heels and their nice jewelry, meanwhile I was the only person in jeans. My bridesmaids showed up looking adorable in their little summer dresses, even my mother in law had snuck out to change into her Sunday best. My girls snatched me away to get changed into my dress and heels and were all pretty pissed that MIL had suggested I wear jeans and a t-shirt to my own bridal shower. That was only a precursor to just how miserable the wedding would be.

Yeah tbh I know it wasn’t her original plan but I’m sure she and the party looked stunning and unique!

If I get married (nowhere even close XD) I am considering going for a dress that's more like a teal colour, and then having the bridal party in white. I just don't feel like I want something conventional in a dress. I am not someone who wears white very often at all and I know that this would make a wedding dress 'special' but it also makes it feel less 'me'. So I think inverting the tradition would look impactful.

@@Carpathianpixie Some actress last year got married in a gorgeous blue dress and had all her bridesmaids (all were married) wear their white wedding dresses 😁

That friend in the first story who took a red win cup to that evil MIL, has earned the right to be called a Bro. This is the very definition of a Bro for life. Respect.

On the second story, if my spouse said something like that about me, I would divorce them on the spot. If we are married than I am part of your family 100%. No questions.

11:00 No, MIL, it’s the groom’s and bride’s special day, not yours. Are you getting married today? No. A simple white dress is one thing but she deliberately picked out a wedding dress. I think to call what she (the MIL) a faux pas would be a huge understatement.

Charlotte, I have been recovering both physically and emotionally from an ectopic pregnancy for the past few days. I've been binging your videos. They have helped me so so much. Thank you for helping me through this time.

That’s a tough one. I have had two. Just be aware once you had the first you have a high chance of another ectopic. I am glad you are okay. Very dangerous. I had three children using IVF

this first story was amazingly written. I am so invested. She could write a book and Id read it. I love the bond with these tw2o girls. Dont worry I got you, the conspiracy. Bestie! I love how they went for a spa day too. Honestly this should be the reaction to anyone showing up in white to a wedding unless told to do so. You get wine'd. Those are the rules now.

That first story was awesome. This is why bride's maids were originally created to protect the bride. This MOH went above and beyond. I didn't have any issue with my MIL or my own mother but still she was fantastic. More brides should have friends like this on their big day. It would help to keep things in order. In the second story, I'm with Charlotte I would have brought out the salad I'd made and looked everyone in the eye. Then I would announce. "I'm going to leave now. I heard what you said and I don't want to inconvenience you any more so I'll take the next flight I can arrange and be out of your hair." However, when my husband returned home he and I would have a very long talk about how he disrespects me behind my back and how uncertain I am about our future together since he clearly doesn't respect me.

Same except I would skip the talk with POS husband. The fact he trashes her to his family means she will never be included. Pack your stuff and leave.
