I think OP took it too far because let’s not forget there are children involved and not only that, he was also punishing OP’s girlfriend who was an innocent party in all this. You also have to think about the fact that Todd has been the golden child forever to the detriment of both OP and their sister. He has spent years preening over mommy and daddy giving him everything and not giving OP and sister what they need. They wanted ONE DAY EACH. They wanted THEIR WEDDING DAYS. Their parents and brother couldn’t even give them that. OP’s NTA and warned Todd he would regret messing up yet another milestone.

If my husband would have tried to propose to me at someone else's wedding I would have stopped him and been very upset. So she had it coming as well and deserved it as well. Also What other thing could have been done to ruin the proposal that would only affect Todd. You're forgetting Todd has OPs parents on his side no matter what. So it had to be a type of revenge that makes it looks like OPs not involved and that also somehow doesn't hurt the baby shower stealing 304. Ok. I tend to agree with the original post. The main points that stick out to me is the sister, Abby had a baby shower. Todd's baby momma could have simply attended introduced herself to the family and followed up with a lunch to announce a baby. But also, she could have also waited for Todd to propose before announcing a baby. There are reasons why there is a phrase "shotgun wedding". The reasons are babies on the way. 2nd. Groom did not want Todd as his groomsman, nor did he even want him at the wedding or reception. He already knew what to expect. He relented for the sake of his parents. Promises were made and promises were broken. I wouldn't have hired an actress to make that kind of accusation. And, if I was an actress, I wouldn't take that kind of job. Having said that... Damn. All of this could have been avoided if groom stuck to his guns and dropped Todd as groomsman and uninvited him to the wedding. The lines were already drawn. They would never do the family reunion thing or holidays thing again. Todd would have proposed on his own. Now, the parents at least have their eyes open to how Todd treats his siblings. He legit broke his promise to his parents and his brother by NOT waiting for a different day. He could have proposed the day after. Or... He could have done something with his GF'S side of the family to propose to her in front of her family and friends. Nope. He wanted himself and his GF to get dressed up and have photographers and videographers and a ready to go crowd of people. Then he chose the bride's dance with her father as the time to do it. It's not petty. It's standing up to emotional blackmail and bullying to move forward in life with Todd no longer in it. And if sister Abby is mad at groom... Perhaps she should be the one to tell Todd's GF it was a prank. No punches were thrown. No property was damaged. Lies were told to avenge promises made that were never intended to be kept. Somehow, I think the parents will still end up siding with Todd instead of groom. And that will be the real eye opener. Lines have been drawn. They will be forced to see they were always standing on one side of the line and treated the other children unfairly to favor the 1.

I think a LOT of people have a sort of Stockholm syndrome with their family. They seem gaslit into not trusting their gut and believing their family isn't that bad. I had a friend like this in high school. Her bedroom was literally a closet off her little brother's room and she waited on him and cooked family dinner after school. I could never convince her that things were not right. In a way I think those of us with very obvious and undeniable family issues are better off. We can make a clean break and feel mostly okay about it. Those with more passive aggressive families just can't seem to shake them.

I soo wish when I got married o didn’t invite majority of the people I did invite! My cousin made things delay and not run a smooth and I don’t even like her, just felt she had to go! Another cousin I wanted to go couldn’t because another cousin I didn’t like HAD to go (according to my family) I felt bullied into inviting people! Last story shout-out to the unnamed gal friend who spent the entire wedding man-marking Todd, poised and ready to announce that she was pregnant with his baby, and did so knowing full well there was a STRONG chance she’d be b****-slapped by Lucy, and DEFINITELY need to leave the wedding immediately after the scene, yet was still willing to take one for the team and do this for the couple. What a friend! 😳

That's the part that got me. Even after he told Todd not to do anything, he went a did it during one of the most special moments for a bride at her wedding. If someone ruined my daddy-daughter dance I'd kick them out on the spot. Not a F will be given.

My thing with Todd is that he cried to his parents, parents defended him saying he wasn’t going to actually propose and that OP was being judgmental and then OP relented and was like, fine but don’t propose or you’ll regret it, to which I assume Todd was like yeah okay, I won’t. When my now wife and I were planning our wedding.... Her mom and stepmom began making plans for the reception that we didn't approve of. The two of them don't like each other. So they were going back and forth, trying to out do one another. I forgot to mention.... I was the one paying for EVERYTHING! After constant fighting. And horribly upsetting my future wife....we called off the planned ceremony and reception. And got married privately within the courthouse!

Todd won't stop now that his brother and sister both don't have big parties coming up anymore. He'll use everything his kid will do to make himself center of the attention. And I don't see any way how a kid could be happy with parents that won't think about their child. But yes, even if Lucy is upset, she should think about her kid. Very clearly she doesn't care about the kid's feelings, she only cares about punishing her ex(?) boyfriend. I think both don't care about the child that much - which is very sad in itself.

Side note: Exactly once have I seen someone propose at someone else's wedding. *However!* it was with the bride & groom's permission, and it was during the bouquet toss. Bride pretended to wind up, then handed it to the guy, who came over and gently led his girlfriend out of the pack of grappling bridesmaids, handed her the flowers, then knelt down and pulled out a ring. *That* was a sweet moment (that was okay with the newlyweds) that didn't step on the toes of anyone else. Bonus sugar: the newly engaged girl then handed the flowers off to another girl who they knew had really wanted to catch the bouquet.

My husband and I got married in a Tuesday at the courthouse. I wore my dress and got my hair done. Our parents knew and spread the word if people wanted to show up. Some did. We had dinner after at Olive Garden. A month later our family decided we needed a reception. We said we didn’t need one. They planned it and invited people I haven’t seen since I was a kid 😆 no cost to my husband and I, the family got there party and we got gifts!! I say we won the wedding.

My husband & I were married alone by the phenomenal hippy Howie on the beach in Hawaii. I didn’t have to worry about anyone else, we saved tens of thousands even after living it up in Hawaii for weeks, & my photos look like they belong in a magazine. To try to appease all, we had an engagement luau for friends before we left, staged wedding pics with family at a fancy place, & had a boring formal reception for family after we returned. People will always complain but this way the people who mattered were happy & enjoyed our day! 💞

14 years ago, I worked in a company where our bosses established a culture of helping one another. Whenever a colleague gets married, all of us are free to come but we have to pay for our meal (there’s over a hundred of us). I was the creative guy so I offer photography for free. My other colleague is a good make up artist, another one is a good host, we also have singers and another is a good coordinator, all for free as a gift to the bride or groom. My bosses always give the most fancy gift to the couple. It all worked well for everybody and everyone who got married in that company ended up with a really fun and amazing big weddings. For over 4 years I have worked there, I have done 4 weddings and those couples felt so blessed to be a part of that company. Already left the country and my boss, those colleagues and I are still good friends. It was a lovely experience.

Lucy and Todd are two of a kind, both desperate for the spotlight, especially at other people’s expense. She can’t legally withhold access to the child without a court order, so let them figure out their own mess. Go with “It was just a prank, bro, sorry you don’t have a sense of humor, you’re too sensitive,” ONLY if he pays the invoice you sent. As ye sow, so shall ye reap. Sorry for the kid, but he has two crap parents anyway, and is likely in for a lifetime of them making his celebrations and accomplishments about them anyway, this is a blip on the radar.

i'll be of a sliiightly different opinion here, just for conversation: the only reason why i'd think she went to far in her revenge is that it affected the kid, who is an innocent third party. Even if his parents are insensitive jerks, i'm pretty sure it would still hurt to have divorced parents. Imagine the kid learning the whole story when he's older: "my parents got divorced because they weren't respectful at my aunt's wedding and my aunt took revenge on them by ruining their marriage" (LOL ok yea they reap what they sow, tho it also makes the aunt look bad) At this point, even if she does apologize for "going too far," how can she be assured that Todd and Lucy won't take revenge for her revenge? I mean, the situation clearly didn't help them apologize for their actions. Nothing was resolved; only escalated. Isn't that why revenge isn't usually worth it?

As an older person let me give younger people some advice. The thing you will remember about your wedding day is the people you're with and the moments spent with them. That's what sets the tone of the whole day, the people. If there are people who cause you stress in your life leave them out. This is a day about making you and your SO feel happy and special, not about meeting social expectations. It's YOUR day, not your family's.

I got engaged in 2018 and we planned a long engagement and set the wedding to be in 2021. When we started to put a guest list together to get ahead on the planning covid hit and we took that opportunity to have a much smaller wedding and use covid as the reason to not invite the entitled and toxic family members. We had an wedding in May 2021 with 45 of the best and nicest friends and family. Went from having an almost 200 person wedding to a drama free small group of people who wanted nothing but to share in the love 😄

We had like 95 guests 11 were mine (8 family members and 3 friends) and rest were husband's. It's really hard to make cuts. I mean, mine was simpler because neither side of mine likes to attend. My aunts did come, left after food (which i knew and i didn't care what time people left),my uncle didn't because he had silly beef with mom. Didn't invite my other uncle because honestly i don't really know him and his looks and social skills resemble forest troll. Didn't invite my grandma because she was horrible person. It was very easy to keep her out of loop. I just told mom and aunt that they can say I got married at city hall with only witnesses (which was true. Only invited parents and siblings) Didn't invitr cousins. Because dads'side they are 10-15 years older and mom's side 10-15 years younger. Uncle's kids i do not know (because his silly beef with mom). Aunt of that side had her youngest with her, he was 9 and we had fun. Husband has big and close family. So it was uncles and aunts and cousins and their kids. Everything went well. Only 1 drunk ah (husband's side)

Just gotta say this is always my thought to this story too. This takes it too far because of the collateral damage. This doesn't just hurt Todd it hurts Lucy, and it hurts their baby child who is completely innocent even if the argument could be made that Lucy was also deserving of some revenge for the baby shower thing. This would be the sort of story that if say a friend in the future told me they'd done this, I'd never be able to see them the same way again because I just couldn't get "that poor kid though" out of my head. You've always got to mind the splash damage on revenge plots - if more than just your target is equally hurt, it's too far and to me it just makes OP read as being just as self-centered and heartless as Todd in the end, damaging three lives to get back at one.@@Tasha9315

I put no children on my invitations and 95% of the guests were fine with it but a couple of my husbands friends weren’t happy with this. I found out that they were going to bring them anyway so I uninvited them. I really enjoyed the aftermath. They then tried to convince other friends not come and not tell us but that didn’t work. I also didn't want kids, but really we don't have that many around, in the end we have 4 kids one 13yo that I'm godmother of, my 10yo sister and two kids of my husbands brother one was few months and second was 2yo, place that we had wedding had special place for kids, totally on another side, from dancing and our table, so I actually saw like two times this little ones and they were quiet, and they were there like for 4h and they took them and go to room and older ones were practicaly a teen age so no problem with them. But I was on weddings that had so many kids that it was scary , like do much chaos and soo loud, so for me I agree with you. And with situation like getting call on last minute if they can take them bc they don't have babysitter, like serious? The sixth (a sister he hardly ever talks to) was terribly disappointed with us and of course brought the kids on the trip with them, and then had to try to find babysitters. The kids came to the rehearsal dinner and totally took over what we had hoped would be an adult event, but whatever. Then his sister actually said to him "If it's about the gift, we'll give you double if the kids can come". Are you kidding? In the end, they gave us two handmade christmas figurines. Honestly, I was in the same situation as Todd. Was born with complications, had to go in and out of the hospital for 2 years, and was spoiled by my family and relatives. I also have 2 much older siblings (8 and 9 years older). That said, I would never be so entitled as to take the spotlight from my siblings... but the problem is, it was kinda what happened which led to a somewhat strained relationship with my brother; the middle child. He was also spoilt before I was born, and since I was born with many complications, my parents had to focus their attention on me. I honestly, wondered why he barely talked to me when I was younger, even though our eldest (my sis) and I were close. Now that I'm older and completely understood, I feel horrible, even though it was technically not my fault. I'm already 24, and am still barely able to talk to my brother. I know he loves me, because even though he's not very expressive, he does show that he cares, but you can just feel the distance... I am trying to fix this, but my anxiety often makes me second guess myself. I want to be close with my brother like any normal family, so the thought of Todd driving a wedge in his relationship with his siblings for attention makes me angry. He's definitely done this type of sh*t for years both intentionally and not. While it may seem drastic, considering what other things he did, I think the revenge is just right, he was warned after all. He's selfish and I don't even know how he could live with himself and not even apologize. As for his (I assume) ex and thier kid, while the kid was definitely innocent, the girl definitely wasn't. Who announces their pregnancy at someone else's baby shower?! I think they're cut from the same cloth.

At the end of the day, I did take the attention away from my siblings. After all, my parents had to leave them for weeks or even months to take care of me. Still, thank you. I know my brother, pretty well despite not talking to him much. He's just a little too stubborn for his own good, and I'm a bit too timid when directly addressing familial conflict; 2 traits that don't mix. But, as I've said, it's getting better. 🙂 It's just a little disheartening that he gets triggered by the things I do, yet completely fine when our eldest sibling or our cousins do it, that's all.

I think it would help to have a candid, open conversation about it. IT IS SCARY BEYOND BELIEF TO DO SO lol and I totally understand. But the same thing happened to me, except I was on the other side. My sister had a SIGNIFICANTLY better childhood than I did, and she incurred only half the trauma that I did. But none of it was her fault; it was my parents and older siblings that were just horrible (less so my mom, she was trying her best as an overworked single mother; the rest, they were complete pieces of s***). We grew up f***ing hating each other. I spited her for how well she got treated over me, and she spited me for resenting her. We were also pitted against each other by our dad and siblings quite often, which fueled the fire. When I was 19, I moved out and went no contact with everyone in my family for two years. After I opened contact with them again, things got a little better with my sister and my mom. When we were older, I think I was maybe 26 and she was 25 or so? We started getting along a lot better, and she actually came to my defense a lot when I was being judged or criticized by my family. One day we were talking, and it just kind of all came out. We talked about all the things we'd gone through as children, and I told her things I went through that she had NO IDEA about - many of them to protect her. After that, we practically became best friends. It was extremely difficult and took us a lot to get to this point, but it was SO WORTH IT. At the end of the day, I had always wanted a close relationship to my sister, and I loved her so much; but I was so overcome with the envy and resentment of how we grew up. As an adult I was able to separate the two - it had nothing to do with her (even if she was a little s*** about it sometimes lol, she was just a child), and it was all on our parental figures who caused so much stress and trauma to us. Being in therapy has helped even more in working out those complex feelings. All of that is to say, you probably don't need to go through all the mess that my sister and I went through lol. But having a straight up, candid, "I'm sorry you went through what you went through as kids, and I feel like there's strain between us because of it but I want to be closer to you," or something along those lines, will make such a huge difference. It might seem hard to believe, but I'm absolutely sure that he's waiting for something like that, too. I'm sure he wants to be closer to you, too, especially because you indicated that he loves you and watches out for you despite the rift.

My aunt and uncle had the best wedding. It was a Labor Day barbecue, and per family tradition all of our close family and a good portion of our extended family was there as well. No one knew anything was going to happen, so about an hour in, half of us are in the pool, my aunt says "Hey, there's going to be a wedding out back if anyone wants to come see it." They had a little arch made out of balloons, my dad only knew because he's a lawyer and was able to do the paperwork for them on short notice and officiate for them (My mom nearly murdered him after she found out for letting her go to her sisters wedding in her swim suit) and it was hands down the best wedding experience I've ever had.

At first I was surprised that lucy never thought of the possibility that the 'proof' of cheating could be fake and was a revenge action by their victims. But then I realised, that for her, the power to harm family members is the most attractive feature of Todd. So, that power being broken disqualifies him for her. I think the question whether OP went too far with his revenge, should not only consider the plain circumstance, that Todd proposed during the Father-daughter dance of OP's wedding. There is Todds live long attitude of showing dominance by ruining as much as possible for his brother and sister. And their parents enjoying that. Apparently, according to them, Todd proposing at OP wedding, was so horrendous, that even this dominance addicted asshole whould not do that. And then he did. Given the history, this probably has happened before. So OP and sister are not treated as members of the family, but as enemies. So they have the right to fight back.

My brother flew from California (our home state) to Missouri (my current residence) to be at my wedding. It’s about 1800 miles from California to Missouri. I was touched, and it made it the most perfect day. It was a small intimate wedding, immediate family only. Which was exactly what we wanted. It's such a strange concept to me how in the USA weddings seem so over regulated and attending them so pricey. I'm German, have been married twice and have attended a good share of weddings in my life. Apart from themed weddings (There was a medieval one and guests were asked to come in medieval style costumes) I've never been asked or heard from a wedding were guests have been asked to wear a certain type of wardrobe, pay a certain amount of money or whatever. In Germany you'll get an invitation with date and time and that's that, at least in my experience. Also I've never been confronted with guests demanding such and such treatment, that's so weird!

Every wedding I've been to has been fairly modest: the bride either had family make the dresses or chose an inexpensive option, and there were no weird expectations for guests or from guests. People who expect their wedding party to spend that kind of money are either too wealthy to know the difference, or are just plain bad at managing money and are probably going into debt for the event. Well, I don't understand the need for more than one groomsman or bridesmaid either to be honest. Here in Germany the bride and groom will just pick one best man and one maid of honor. Usually the best friends of bride and groom, but sometimes their brother or sister. Typically best man and maid of honor help out should a mishap or problem arise and they're most often the ones who organize some party games and surprises. But the only thing that's required of them is to stand witness to the marriage and sign the certificate along with bride and groom. They're never expected to wear special clothing or pay an enormous amount of money for anything.@@jayc222

Note: our dads were college roommates. Our moms were each other’s maids of honor. I was born eight months after my friend, and her brother was born six days before my sister. We… see each other as family. Sharing clothes and the like. Her then-fiancé did not understand this. This Close Friendship our families have. His first reaction, apparently was to ask my friend, “Why you want her (meaning me) to come? Is she going to wear that weird black scarf?” I still have this black scarf, and I don’t wear it everyday now, but I used to. I’d tie it in place, and let it trail down my back. It was my Statement. This actually led to my friend not talking to him for a few days because she was that mad at him. She told him “All of my siblings will be invited! My three sisters and my brother.” But… they are divorced now (he was a stupid cheater). And my friend got the dog, so she feels she got the better option

I have an entitled guest story from my own wedding: I invited one of my good friends and her boyfriend. I saw them during the ceremony. She kept waving at me trying to get my attention during the ceremony which was pretty annoying but then they just disappeared after that. They didn't even return for dinner. I was a little annoyed because that was two dinners that we had to pay for, even though they RSVP'd and gave their dinner order to the staff. I was more concerned about my friend than anything. I sent her a text the next day to find out what happened. Her reply: "We left because you weren't spending any time with us. I thought we were going to hang out after the ceremony but you left so fast, and took wayyyy too long taking photos. We got bored. Oh, and the appetizers were gross." I let her know that it wasn't fair just to leave since we had to pay for the dinners that went to waste. I told her that I couldn't hang out with her because was attending my own wedding and the day was very busy. She proceeded to call me a f***ing bitch and to never contact her again. I think a lot of people would say punishment doesn't fit the crime because Lucy was also extremely hurt and there is an innocent kid in all of this who suddenly has one parent who absolutely despises the other. This isn't something that only the jacka$$ brother was affected by. But another commenter above pointed out that Lucy isn't completely innocent, either, what with announcing her pregnancy at someone else's baby shower. I think that yeah, OP may have taken things a bit too far, but I also think he's justified in doing it. He told the brother not to do anything, and warned him that he'd regret it if he did. For the last story: My mom and I think the revenge on Todd was a but too much considering that there is a kid involved. But honestly, it was kind of deserved. He was warned beforehand repeatedly, he lied that he wasn’t going to do it, and he proposed at one of the most important moments in the reception. He paid for his entitled and spoiled behavior. I'm pretty sure the side piece was told only to step in if Todd did start to propose. I feel bad for the kid yes, but Todd was warned, he has done things like this before, and he did this during one of the most intimate parts of the wedding after lying about it. He only has himself to blame. If he isn't willing to admit he was wrong then OP has absolutely no reason to tell everyone the truth. Especially with Todd's record for things like this. I'm just going to say that if I had been a guest at the wedding that Todd proposed at, it would have been the best wedding ever (aside from my own). Since Todd has failed to apologize, yet still wants his brother to straighten things out for him, it is obvious he has learned nothing. His baby mama must not trust him too much to jump straight to guilty and break up their family. If mommy and daddy ever give Todd a chance to grow up, he might figure out that he can file for visitation. Every time I watch your wedding videos I'm glad my husband and I got married in a small wedding. I mean small; it was basically my aunt (the notary public), my mother, and two witnesses who were friends of my aunt. Their son took our wedding photos. 7 people counting my husband and me. We traveled 2 hours with a 15 month old in a suit, To my SIL's wedding. It was a gorgeous, remote, mountain location. It was beautiful. He was the only baby there because he was her nephew. It was an angel (miracle in itself). We then had to travel. An hour to the reception hall. It was a beautiful glorious day. My mother in law was in a wheelchair And she did just fine. MIL didn't want to go because it would be too hard. She had a great time!

That was super nice of them to do! My dad and stepmom had an Alice and wonderland themed reception, and hand crafted/painted wooden signs with all the locations from the story, and a wonderland themed cake. It was waaay cooler then the more traditional wedding vibe, anything like fantasy themed or with a literary or cool series or nerdy reference/theme that the couple enjoys just make for really really fun weddings to attend.

What a fun theme! That was one of my favorite books as a child. I had a gorgeous old copy from the 1920s that had great illustrations all through it. I especially love the Cheshire Cat, and I've always related to the Dormouse; sleepy and often missing out on things! I wish I still had that book. It was stolen during a house party, along with my beloved 1961 (the year I was born) record album of twist music. Some people! Never knew who took them. I didn't get to go to my niece's wedding but I sure wanted to. She and her wife got married as soon as it became legal in Texas. Their wedding was October, on Friday the 13th! The theme was Halloween and cute but spooky stuff. Lots of black kitties, pumpkins, and Dia de los Muertos painted skeleton decor. She has a masters degree in Theatre and works as director/producer/ actress for a professional theatre company in Dallas, so she got to borrow some fun props. I'm sure that the evangelical members of the family are still trying to find pieces of their skulls after their heads all exploded! Several of my cousins unfriended me on Facebook because of my response to their hateful posts about how my dear niece and her beloved, and all who supported their "unholy union", would be tortured in hell for all of eternity. I told them that I agree with everything Jesus said about Love and homosexuality, and I suggested that if they are against gay weddings, then they shouldn't have one... and MYOB!! 😉🌈

As for the last one, Hell to the YES!! Todd got what he deserved. I lived up until about 12 years ago as the ugly red-headed stepchild. And I was the oldest . ( Started when I was 9, I'm now 64.) Once the sibling was adopted, I was put on the back burner for a lot of my life. And once the sibling had their first child (bearing the family name, since he was a boy), it started happening to my daughter as well. When she looked at her cousins's piles of presents from my parents, and the one present from them to her (part of which was something I'd given my mom 10 years before), her eyes filled up with tears. All I could say to her was "Welcome to my world, baby girl." The sibling in question had destroyed things of mine, made things up about me, and pretty much got everything he asked for handed to him. I never got to taste revenge as sweet as OP's. Kudos, man!!! I get it!!

Considering my wedding back in 1993 only cost us about 2000 in total (including dresses, reception etc but it was only 60 people) I could have made some serious cash!!! We had just built our home and had moved in about 6 weeks before the wedding and were living on ramen and crackers so we could pay for everything.. The money my parents had put aside for my wedding we had used (with their permission) for the house deposit and we did most of the decorating etc ourselves. Mum made my dress, my best friends mum decorated the cake that my sister made (we paid them both), my best friends sister in law made the bridesmaid dresses (I paid for the material and for her to make them) and a friend of my sister was a starting out chef who made all the food for our wedding lunch which was a buffet (and we paid him too and got to take home the leftovers..which wasn't much because the food was amazing... oh those profiteroles were divine!). I gave my brother 8 rolls of film and told him to go nuts taking pics, another mate had an awesome sound system and dj'd for us and we hired the local football hall and decorated it ourselves with my parents bringing up heaps of roses, ivy and bottle brush from my parents garden. It was a really laid back wedding, lots of fun and we all had a great time.

I was so hoping the wedding proposal would go exactly the way it did. I would wait about a month and then tell the girlfriend it was done to teach him a lesson about stealing other people's special moments. And make sure she understands that she and her children will never be the center of attention, so think about the life she wants. And then, I would deploy the last stage of the nuclear option. Full no contact with Todd and let the parents know even the slightest mention of Todd when they are around him and his family - that's an immediate end to the visit. Neither Todd nor his parents will ever change so there's no point in having them around.

My cousin got married a few years ago. Growing up, she was the black sheep of her family. She’s adopted and once her parents had a natural born child, she became an afterthought and someone to blame for everything. My parents and I loved her to bits and made her feel safe and relaxed. Even when her family moved to China (her parents got teaching jobs there), I still felt incredibly close to her. She came back to Canada when we were in Uni and I still felt like she was one of the dearest people in my life. She was there for me when I went through bad breakups and vice versa. When I met her now husband I even made sure to let him know he’d have to deal with me if he ever hurt her. 😜 After they started getting more serious, though, she drifted away. She also started trying to make things work with her parents and younger sister (who hates her and claims she’s the cause of all her mental illnesses despite being her older sister’s bully from the time she could talk). I was happy she could forgive their neglect and resolve things, though I personally did not understand. I’m not as forgiving of mistreatment from parents towards their children. I always thought we’d be in each other’s weddings. When I was little, I always told her I wanted her to be my maid of honour and wedding coordinator in one, Cos she’s super good with money and really organized. I thought we’d make a great team, and I let her know I’d be there for her at her wedding. She never expressed the same sentiments to me, but she’s a pretty stoic person who doesn’t show emotion much so I didn’t really see it for the red flag it was… By the time she got married, we were no contact. She had distanced herself for a while and eventually ghosted me. I never knew why. I still wanted to be in her life, but I backed off when I realized I was not wanted. When I was dumped by who i thought was the love of my life, she didn’t even reach out to console me. At least not until her mother said something. I decided I would officially let the relationship go, as much as it hurt, because she had moved on and no longer really thought about or cared for me. We haven’t spoken in years. When the wedding rolled around, my parents got an invite. I did not. I wasn’t planning on going, but I did at least expect an invitation. Turns out they had decided a blanket “no cousins” rule, even though the groom had a cousin desperate to go and a great aunt willing to let her take her spot and me who, while I did not want to go, had at one point been more of a sister to my cousin than hers ever was. I’ll admit, it stung. Even though I didn’t want to or plan on going if invited. I guess it felt like that final nail in the coffin in our relationship, especially since she seemed to think my parents ought to be invited knowing they would never go to her wedding if I was going to be excluded (I’m an only child and the three of us are tight knit - you get all of us, or none of us, which they are aware of). Kinda felt like they only sent the invite so my parents would feel obligated to send a wedding gift in exchange for their non-attendance. It’s ok. I’m not really in contact with most of my family. We’re pretty dysfunctional and there’s been lots of abuse towards my parents that I have decided never to forgive, even if my parents are ok letting it go. I wish I had their patience and grace. Instead of family, I have a close network of friends on whom I can rely who are far kinder, more helpful, and more loving than my extended family ever was, all while being just as dysfunctional. 🙂 I think the difference between me and some of these AITA people are that, while I was irrationally hurt by a family member’s decision around their wedding, I didn’t say a thing. I expressed my sadness to my mum and left it alone. I didn’t pick a fight or pitch a fit. I haven’t even really thought about it until binge watching Charlotte’s wedding drama videos. 😝 guess I just wanted to vent.

It's crazy that you and your parents seem to be the only decent people in your family. 💀 But I'm glad you're no contact with most of them and I hope you guys can heal from the shit they've given. Truly disappointed in people.

I am sorry. It seems like this girl was ungrateful to a T. In a way she treated you and your family like an afterthought... just like hers did to her when the biodaughter was born. It seems she fixed the relatioship with her adoptive parents and then forgot to people that supported her along the way. As much as it hurts, you don't want someone like this in your life.

​​@@Willowy13 I don't think she really fixed the relationship with the adoptive parents. They probably blamed all their problems on this other family so now she has rewritten the story to make it seem as if they were actually to blame for her parents' behavior. This cousin is a reminder that she was the blacksheep of the family, so now she is exclusing her because she doesn't want to remember. Unfortunately, I suspect they are using her for something, so that's why they're treating her nicely at the moment. Once she has a real problem in life, they will turn their backs on her again.

Todd /brother thing - was told not to ruin the wedding or he will regret it, did it anyway. Always consequences for our actions - he had his karma served up fresh in front of everyone. Centre of attention- what he wanted 😁 What if the situation were reversed?!

I'd do the same thing or give them exactly what they want and have it announced in an exaggerated way over the PA system and they're paying for the bar so everyone drink up on an engaged couple's dime. They'd probably be so embarrassed to point trying to leave but still owe thousands on bar bill.
