Johan Liebert is up there with Kreia and Liesolette Werckmeister as my favorite villain in fiction. His goal is challenging and thought provoking, his methods are creeping and surreal, like something blurred at the edges of your vision you won't notice his passing until the world around you is in flames. And his presence... whereas many of my other favorites have a sort of life to them, Johan is the opposite. He feels... empty. Is empty, yet he does all these horrible things. It is not scary to see a villain laughing maniacally as their plans come to fruition, but it IS scary to see one who looks out with dispassionate gaze, as though they care little for their victory.

@d9tx2di2j Kreia is from a Star Wars game, Knights of the Old Republic 2. Lieselotte is from a Japanese visual novel called 11eyes. Both of which are still some of my favorite works and I hold them in high regard. Edit: With 11eyes specifically, the visual novel, not the shitty anime adaptation that cut out 3/4 of the plot and character writing.

He is a sociopath , and the dangerous type as well (the feeler sociopath) meaning that he can read people's emotions and understand what they feel and their motivations anf intentions , but he doesn't feel anything about it (no empathy nor happiness nor sadness) he just feels empty and feels disgust over those who contradict with his values so he just kinda punish them. Indeed a very lonely existence , but terrifiying existence though.

A sociopath is just a scientific term that refers to people born without conscious. Those people see to world very differently than us and there is a very strange look on their eyes , they don't blink often and their eyes seem very empthy (anthony hopkins did a terrific performance as hannibal lecter) So when you look in their eyes , first question you start wondering is : what do they see with those eyes ? And you'll just label them as non-humans or just monsters because you never saw something like that before in your life.

Because That's what herbert believes , he probably is religious or at least strongly believes in religion (johan offering him a gun is like the devil offering adams the apple). Alcohol missed with his head a lot as well , besides he wasn't intellectually developed enough to label johan for what he truly is. Methaphorically , johan is a monster or a devil or whatever evil thing you call him. But truly , he is just a guy with no concious (humans don't make sense to him. He doesn't understand how people selfishly decided whats right and whats wrong , so he decided to determine for himself whats right and whats wrong based on how he preceives society and the world) And johan is a product of these self made beliefs.

iNunky Looks to me like he just got back from a great back massage. LOL XD, but in all seriousness from what I can tell the very presence of Johan has a certain evil atmosphere around it and can terrify any normal individual. This is really emphasized by the way people describe him as pure evil. He's also a great liar which is why he can mask this evil atmosphere, sneak up on people and deceive them into thinking he is innocent. If you've ever stood in front of someone with an intense atmosphere like Johan's you would kind get how it can be intimidating and (as in Schuvald's case) be traumatizing.

He is completely void of it - far beyond existentialism, this is a man who is calm in the face of Hell, even a Hell he caused. A man with no emotion is far scarier than anything else that exists, because he is capable of absolutely anything. He has no place, only presence. That's what makes him a Monster.

+shag stars While I agree with you on the existence of those archetypes, You misunderstand Johan as he doesn't fall under any of them. Johan is beyond feeling anything, which makes him more beyond existentialism than even The Joker. It shows in his face. It was a pure calm in the midst of what he had done, which makes him FAR more of a monster than even someone who does things just because it's funny, and for entertainment, like for instance The Joker. That's why Joker loves Batman, because Batman gives him purpose - Johan has absolutely no purpose, no remorse, nothing. He just does - the evil in his actions comes from his past, but it was also his past that took his emotion - he plans, but abandons his plans on a whim, just because. That's why he always has the same expression, a calm grin. He feels absolutely nothing. And that is what terrified this old man, because he saw it in Johan's eyes.
