Here is a video explaining the differences between a top cut and mid cut when buying or propagating a monstera. The axillary bud (growing eye) only matters when you have a mid cut as that is where the new grow will sprout from.

Most people don't notice it because you don't typically chop up your plants. Lol but when you take a mid-cutting or when you buy mid cutting, the growing eye is important to the new growth of the plant

Ya... I'm not too sure if you cut too close to the node and through the growing eye it would get a new stem or not. That's why it's very important to make sure there is a viable growing eye on the stem

Jeff, what would you have done differently with the monstera water propagation? Keep in water longer till acclimated? Enjoy your videos and that you actually research before making blind statements! Thank you.
@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants Жыл бұрын
What do you mean differently? It is progressing as it should and is ready to be potted up in soil. Since it is a top cutting, the new growth will continue from the leaf petiole and grow upright.
@pitterpatti1958
@pitterpatti1958 Жыл бұрын
May be a silly question…when you plant the water cutting that you showed, how do you deal with the roots at different levels? The growing eye seems to be between the root on the top node and the roots at the bottom. Will you clip off the upper root or will the growing eye be beneath the soil?
@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants Жыл бұрын
The growing eye doesn't matter with this cutting because it is a top cutting. The new growth will continue to grow out of the petiole....continuing to grow normally. The growing eye is activated when you no longer have the top. In this case this would be the mid cut. It will turn send out the new growth from the growing eye. Hope this makes sense
@whiskybrush3219
@whiskybrush3219 Жыл бұрын
It's more of a concern with the original plant. My monstera was extremely leggy due poor lighting and after pruning the floppy top, the main plant activated all the top growth points and forked into two big stems.
@robparsons213
@robparsons213 Жыл бұрын
Jeff, I don't think you are to blame, certainly not solely to blame, for the new fenestrated but small leaf. The large leaf it came with was probably produced by the established roots of the mother plant, whereas your new leaf was produced by the much smaller new roots. I'm guessing the next leaf will, therefore, be larger than the first leaf, as the roots will be bigger, but it may well not be as big as the original leaf. Having said that, I do think each leaf will have the potential to be larger than its immediate predecessor and by the third or fourth leaf they will be as big as the original. I may, of course, be wrong in some of my assumptions! Please do post updates as the plant develops.
@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants Жыл бұрын
After reading this, I would completely agree with you about the root development. I am curious to see how the next leaf turns out. Thanks again for a wonderful analysis, Rob.

@Lavieinspiree

Great videos - just found you. What is your preferred soil mixture for your monsteras? I have been using coco perlite mix and feeding with the Professor Monstera method - but considering moving to something that will allow a little more nutrient retention to allow more time between feedings and I can just water (as opposed to having to feed for most waterings, which is time consuming with the PMM) If you're not familiar with his method - it's worth searching up. I have astronomical growth on all my Monsteras - new leaves every 4-6 weeks or so on the big ones, and every few weeks on my juveniles!

This question might be dumb to some, but I am still learning. 😅 Will a mid cut eventually produce what could be a top cut?
@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants Жыл бұрын
Never a dumb question..... The mid cut will produce a new stem from the growing eye and produce a new plant so to speak. Whereas if you have a top cut it just continues growth in the normal fashion and typically remains of similar size and maturity. Does that make sense? As the plant continues to grow, it will increase in size and maturity
