Monta has been marvellous for the Mavericks. A magician around the rim, He has always impressed with his body control, strength, and ability to take hits, and still finish. Ellis electrifies when he gets to the basket, and with the Mavericks, he proved that he can win; as opposed to just being the man on bad teams (see: every year in the Bay except for the We Believe Warriors). With the guidance of the innovative Rick Carlisle, and led by a first-ballot hall-of-famer in Dirk, the 2014 Mavericks were the most stern test for the champion San Antonio Spurs. Famously, the Texas tussle went the distance, while the Spurs steamrolled every other team (12-4). Monta Ellis was the leading scorer for that team during the 7 game playoff run.
Twirling. Twisting. Turning (in midair most of the time). Bump. Hang. Hit. Finish. That’s what watching Monta is like: Quick. With bursts of brilliance. He’s fun, forceful, and he’s a fierce competitor. He’s been entertaining the league his entire career, and I expect Hoosiers to get to know him pretty well.
Note: I decided to keep it mostly about his time in Dallas, because there’s just so many fantastic clips out there from before then that I would have a really hard time making cuts. That being said, I did decide to pay tribute to his time in Milwaukee and Golden State with the final two plays. Enjoy!
