Follow along as I head to Montana to help a good friend hunt public land bull elk during the general rifle season. We battle cold temps and lots of hunting pressure, but persistence and patience pay off in the end.

Congrats on the Bull, and Thank you so much for making a great video without all that damn music in the background. Hearing the silence in the woods the crunching of the snow from your boots, that brings back memories from years ago. Keep up the good work and good luck for future hunt`s.

Way to persevere. It’s what it takes!! Not bad for public land bull. Filled the freezer. Having pack animals a plus. I always had to do it on the back. Nice!!

Looks like big sky area. I’m guessing because of the rams at the end.

Man I thought he shot the log!! Lol nice job guys
@MatherOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
I actually thought he might have hit the log as well. Once I turned the camera off I checked and he just went through the snow on top of the log. Something we all need to remember to be aware of though, the scope sites a good 2-3 inches higher than the barrel. It is easy to forget about those little things when we are in the heat of the moment.

Awesome hunt guys.Congrats on tagging out.I like your wall tent.What size and brand is it?
@MatherOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
My wall tent is made by Ken's Custom Canvas & Tents in Homedale, ID. Ken does an awesome job and uses only the highest quality materials. This tent is 12'x18' with 6' side walls. I had him custom make it with vinyl section down the center ridge so when I set it up in the backcountry I can cut and use tree poles as the frame. The vinyl protects the canvas from tree stobs. This is the same tent you see in my Backcountry Hunting with Horses & Mules series. On this hunt however I set it up using an internal frame as we were not packing in. I prefer having the taller 6' wall (compared to 5' on most tents) as I'm 6'2" tall and it makes it feel so much larger inside without adding much weight.

Walking across the log is a broken leg waiting to happen. Get a pole for stability if you need to cross

That Ruger #1 is chambered in 300 mag.

You should put something over the end of the barrel like a rubber glove, so it doesn't become a rain Guage. 😮

Just curious i have a question regarding your horses and mules I am trying to get in horseback hunting however hard to find good stock do you any leads on where I can purchase any good reliable stock? Any info would be helpful. Thanks
@MatherOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
Finding good stock can be a challenge. I've been fortunate to have several good friends that are involved with ranching and are experienced horsemen. They were able to help me find my animals through their network of friends and ranchers. Having their support and expertise has been invaluable in my horsemanship journey. One of them has a saying I heard recently that I think is very true, "There are no shortcuts with horses. You can either put the time on them yourself, or pay someone else to do it, but there is no substitute for wet saddle blankets." Generally speaking, you get what you pay for when it comes to buying stock. Sorry I don't have any specific leads for you.

Any elk is a good elk , those big bulls are a little gamey anyway...?
@judithbeers75982 жыл бұрын
Yes they are, Janet. The real old bulls are hardly worth the pack out; they are so tough eaten "you can't stick a fork in the gravy" as my folks used to say.

I like the pack you used on your horse Where can I find one ?
@MatherOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
I used a set of over the saddle panniers on my horse's riding saddle. This allowed me to ride in with it rolled up behind my cantle. On my mule I was using a decker pack saddle with panniers. With a quick google search you should find several options.

So a couple hunters pulled up next to where you were already parked at got out and hiked in in front of you? That's bad hunting ethics in my book. If someone is already there you move on to another spot- public land or not. Too much of that going on out in western Montana now.

It’s a 300 win mag. Looking back at the video did come close to the log, I didn’t see it at the time. Glad it missed it!

Be careful with this video around the 7 minute mark you guys arnt wearing hunters orange yet you are carrying a rifle actively looking for animals. The wardens have been known to fine people for this alot here in montana. The green safety vest doesn't cut it.

Awesome hunt and great video! Wish there were more videos like this of public land late season rifle hunts in the snow. What were the dates of this hunt? I am going CO 3rd Rifle (Nov 11-17) this year and imagine it will be similar, if not worse, conditions. Will do my best to put together a nice video like this one. Congrats again!

Looks like you did not have a camera lens that could reach out and bring the Elk in close when he shot the Elk . It is nice to be able to zoom in on the action when you are about to shoot. Congratulations on the Bull, that was a tough hunt.
@MatherOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
Your assessment is correct, I didn't have a camera with any significant zoom on me when filming the kill shot. Capturing Tim shooting was the best I could manage at the time. I hope to better capture the kill shots for you all in future hunts. I try to balance the act of filming with that of being an active participant in the hunt itself. This hunt was easier as I didn't have the rifle or tag, but any of you that have tried can attest that it's sometimes difficult to do both at the same time. At least it is for me. I'm a hunter first and cameraman second. I hope you all can understand appreciate that.

How much of a hassle is it applying and obtaining a Film Permit?
@MatherOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
Good question. I do not monetize my videos. They are for personal use and I choose to share them with you through this channel, but I do not make money on them in any way. Therefore a film permit was not required. Hence why you don't see those annoying advertisements on my videos that KZbin places on monetized videos.
