The Montblanc 1858 Geosphere is one of the key icons of the Montblanc 1858 line with its two domed turning hemisphere globes and in-house worldtime complication. Inspired by the explorations of legendary mountaineer Reinhold Messner, Montblanc unveils the new Montblanc 1858 Geosphere Limited Edition 1858 that pays tribute to his five-week solo trek across the Gobi desert in 2004. Reproducing the rocky terrain color scheme, the timepiece harmoniously combines a micro-blasted bronze case with a special engraving on the case back, a bi-directional shiny brown ceramic bezel, a smoked brown and beige lacquered dial, and a matching vintage-brown sfumato calf strap.
We are also proud to have our partner Vontobel provide us with in-depth industry knowledge, featured in their latest "Swiss watch industry outlook". You can find it here: bit.ly/3mw6WEN
Montblanc uses a very special technique to highlight the Gobi desert on the back of the watch giving it an authentic rendering in 3-dimensions, providing depth and realism as if it was a photograph. Made of titanium, the metal must first be structured, which means that the decoration will be engraved by laser, taking into consideration the relief of the drawing. Then the desired finish (matt and shiny) is also achieved by laser.
Finally comes the coloring phase. The colors are created with laser-generated oxidation. It is the level of oxidation that determines the final color obtained (and desired). Montblanc is one of the most advanced Swiss manufacturers to use this technology on such a large surface.
Special attention has been paid to the dial with smoked brown to beige. A lacquered finishing combined with warm rose gold-coated elements, such as hands and applied indexes, complete the overall design of this modern tool-style watch. For great readability, the day/night indicator, the cathedral-shaped hands, the indexes, the compass indications, and the hemisphere globes are all coated with beige-coloured Super-LumiNova that has been applied by hand.
The Montblanc 1858 Geosphere Limited Edition 1858 is powered by the Manufacture automatic Calibre MB 29.25. The timepiece has two domed turning hemisphere globes at six and 12 o’clock, which are surrounded by a fixed scale with the 24 time zones and include a rose gold-coated and brown day/night indicator (for both the Northern and Southern hemispheres). The longitude reference meridian for both hemispheres is highlighted with a black line coated with Super-LumiNova. Furthermore, a second time zone, used as a home time indication, is located at nine o’clock and a date aperture (linked to the local time) is located at three o’clock.

A nice bronze colour, will it patina. On the Australian site -The 1850 Geosphere Messner Limited Edition has a Blue dial (looks the same as the one your demonstrating, 262 pieces , AUD $9680 , but its sold out. Does this modle come with 2 different couloed dials or is this the new (2021) modle? There is a 1850 Geosphere Limited Edition , 1858 pieces listed as well. It looks like the one your demonstrating.

@@dwightlooi Agreed pal, admittedly I do have a Montblanc fountain pen, which I like. Cost me lots 😉, but I consider it a “luxury”. Watches, nowadays, I consider myself “lost” to be frank. I purchase what I perceive to be “value”. Longines and Zenith 🤷‍♂️. My Rolex and Omega days are over 👍.
@dwightlooi
@dwightlooi 3 жыл бұрын
@@johnmcdonagh1607 Longines quality is amazing for the price. Especially the new "Heritage" stuff they are putting out lately. Seriously, a Longines Spirit is every bit as well finished as a Rolex Oyster Perpetual -- textured dial, applied numerals with inset lume, etc. Besides, the 2892 derivative movement wouldn't break and costs $300 to fix it it does. Regulation was also nearly perfect at +0.02~0.1s. Most of these don;t have a glass back though (if that's your thing). -- There's also the thing about value. What is value? Getting lots of quality, tech and performance for your money? Or, the fact that the Rolex retains its value and sometimes sell for more used than you paid for it new, whereas the Longines is worth 30% of what you paid the second you leave the store? -- The thing is though... QUALITY DOESN'T SELL watches and brands. Prestige, hype, scarcity, status and ever creeping prices do.

I love the way mechanical watch companies look into new and interesting complications. Although this watch is unlikely to spend much time on my want list I can appreciate the thought and engineering know how that has gone into its creation. The twin hemisphere complication is great but like you Alexander my sight would not be able to appreciate the information they bring. The second 24 hour time is a very useful one as is the hour jump adjustment (why don't more manufacturers have this?) all good,. The compass marked bezel is of limited use other than set it to the orientation of the N mark on the top dial and align with the sun. Here in the UK cloud cover tends to be the norm a lot of the time so not easy to gauge but we have smartphones that can do all this for us, even telling the time allegedly :-) The rear of the watch looks fantastic. Unfortunately for me (fortunate for my wallet) I'm not in the market for a bronze timepiece at the moment but if I was I would certainly give this piece a second look.
