The #montecristo #sandwich is composed of layers of ham and cheese with a touch of strawberry jam and mustard. The sandwich is then dipped into an egg wash and fried like french toast. Mmm...let's do this! 💪🏼

My husband's grandmother used to make a beautiful strawberry jam. I told her how much I loved her jam and asked if she would share the recipe, assuming it was an old family secret. She said, "Oh, honey, I use the recipe from the back of a Sure-Jell box!"

Gabbi Lauck she sounds like a wonderful woman! I love when people appreciate convenience, knowing not everyone can make food that takes 50 steps. I went to culinary school but some of my husband’s favorite things that I cook are the dirt cheap meals like fresh pork neckbones cooked for 8 hours in the crockpot then adding rice for the last little bit.

Hey Emmy, if you take a wet cloth and place it under your cutting board while your using it won’t wobble and prevent unwanted accidents. I cooked in a restaurant where we made Monte Cristo’s in October-December but instead of the traditional strawberry jam we used house mad chunky cranberry sauce with the turkey side and stuffing on the ham side and deep fried it, we would sell out in an hour every day maybe make that this holiday in a special Video! Love your channel and all your efforts, thanks so much!

I love this - thank you. I was very close to an aunt that passed away several years ago. She had some health issues that eventually made it hard for her to do much in the kitchen - a significant blow for this proud southern woman - but no matter what, she ALWAYS had strawberry freezer jam and hot fresh biscuits for me when I visited her. I’m picking up some jelly jars this week - you’ve got me wanting to make it in her honor. And I’m sure my friends won’t mind taking a jar or two off my hands :) thanks, Emmy! Love you and all you do.

When I made this in culinary school (and now at home) I used baby swiss, sour dough bread, and a dusting of powdered sugar. I also used 1 slice of ham and 1 slice of turkey. The jam I usually add AFTER as a dipping option on the side, and I used a brown mustard as well. This looks good and I've done it with white bread recently because we cant find much else for bread right now. It's a favorite in our household and is good for breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner. Whatever you want! It's great.

Honestly, I've never made Monte Cristo like this and my husband and I are chefs. We make ours with white bread, layerd with Swiss cheese and ham. We then dip it in egg wash and then dip them in cornflake crumbs. Then you fry until golden brown and dust with powdered sugar. Serve with hot strawberry or blackberry jam to dip.

Hello emmy~ You can place a tea towel underneath your chopping board to keep it from wobbling or slipping. I love those jams made with pectin. My sister brought me a jar once and we ate it with different kinds of cheese. It was phenomenal. I think I'll go make myself a jar next time when the suitable fruits are in season.

IDK but you nail so many things I love it's eerie! Had to come back here and set this aside in my special Emmy list😊 I have vowed not to waste anymore strawberries and this lovely red jam shall be how!🍓 I don't buy the store stuff. I don't like it. And Monte Cristoes. Made them for my fam when I was a kid minus that yummy jam. We used to eat alot of fried egg sandwiches. And grilled cheese. And grilled spam or bologna. Whatever was cheapest and easiest for a low income big family. And we had chickens, ducks and geese. So you know. Eggs. Have you ever eaten fried egg on bread with peanut butter Emmy? You really should try it. So good! Also tried egg and cheese with Miracle Whip on bread. I'm not fond of MW. I like mayo. But I'll eat it on that sandwich. Then there's cheese. Dairy is my demon.my kid says I'm scary because I'm a cheese freak.😈🧀 Cheese and potatoes. Yum.🥔 She's stuck on Nutella so....I too adore gruyere! And fontina and fontinella and asiago. Sharp and flavorful! Have you ever tried Kasseri? OMG. Delicious! Stella makes a fine one but I haven't been able to get any for awhile. Very strong slightly crumbly and fabulous. When my granddaughter was like 4 I gave her some and she loved it! I was so tickled. Jarlsburg is pretty good as well but not my fave. Also the sharpest white cheddar I can find. Cheese is basically my meat. And other dairy. Yogurt. Ice cream. Cottage cheese. Haha I've gone nuts! Sorry. Just wanted to say hello when I came back to get the recipes. Thankyou lovely Emmy!🤗

My introduction to the Monte Cristo was about 30 years ago in NYC. We were there for a family event and had been booked into a motel in a rather "interesting" area on the outskirts of the city. The kitchen was closed for renovations but the staff directed us to a diner about 10 minutes up the road and suggested we try the Monte Cristo sandwich. Except for breakfast and the reception we attended, that was pretty much my entire diet for the 2 days we were there. The only difference is that I'm used to seeing them with seedless raspberry or blackberry jam... Gonna have to try strawberry now! (And now that I've watched this video, I'm REALLY tempted to try making my own strawberry jam.) Thanks, Emmy! :-)

Jelly: Juice only. Jam: crushed fruits and pieces. Preserves: Whole fruits and juices. Fruits, berries, veggies... What ever they are they taste good. MY great grand mother made tomato Jelly, Jams and preserves. Just leave out much of the sugar for that wonderful tomato flavor. Every year our town hosts a fair, and every year I buy Chili jam made from chili peppers. All made, grown and sold by the seller, which used to be my next door neighbor and our town Mayor. I would urge everyone to think outside the box when it comes to Jelled items. You never know what you can make until you try. He made the most wonderful chili-apple jelly you ever put in your mouth, apple jelly with a little kick to it.

For many years jams and jellies were not canned in a water bath. When I was young many people sealed the jars with melted bees wax and stored on a shelf because few people had a refrigerator. I made freezer jam which was a new thing then and my children could eat a lot of it.

I grew up in central Florida and any Monte Cristos from anywhere were the deep fried kind. I didn't know that wasn't the traditional way until I moved to the Northeast. When I was in culinary class we used to make them as part of our lunch menu, but we made them like french toast first and then deep fried them, and added heavy powdered sugar. They were wildly popular and very tasty.
