I started with the undressing. She helped putting out the arms and pull the shirt over her head. Now with 18 months she is able to get into her pants. Tights are to difficult but she tries with socks. When she couldn't get any further she handed them to me and says "mama".

In our family we taught putting a shirt on from inside-out first, its way easier! Aim the tag at the back of your neck and stick your head in the hole. The rest sorts itself out! That might be easier for Kylie :)

I've also found that having some clothing out with toys encourages them to play/practice (teacher here - though not strict montessori) In my classroom we'll often have spare socks, shoes, hats, and vests out for playing. Not necessarily 'dress up' things, just normal clothes. Some kids are very interested and will practice with putting on/taking off often. Others don't really care, but its nice to have them as an option, just like other materials/toys. And I don't personally make a fuss if they take off clothing while indoors. They are learning. I offer to help get things back on if necessary before we go outside, otherwise I don't see it as a battle worth fighting.

This is my style of parenting and I had no idea that it was an actual thing. I always have explained everything to my son, things were doing, and talking to him about why he shouldn’t do something and give ideas on what he could do. Every time I change him, I lay outfits out and allow him to make the decision on what he wants to wear. I allow him to do what he wants but with guidance if that makes sense.

I have been trying to encourage independence but it just sometimes dont work out with our busy family. It makes me sad. My 4 year old daughter knows how to get dressed by herself. For a few days she would come up to my room in the morning already fully dressed. However, most of the time, she tells me she'd rather I dress her. How do I encourage her to do it on her own? I've been saying "I want to see you try first". Is there a better way to encourage her? Or should I just help her until she declares she wants to do it on her own? Thank you!! I love your videos!

I would help whenever she requests for now, you never know why she’s asking (might just be seeking the one on one connection time). Eventually she won’t want your help anymore. It’s kind of like how we know how to cook dinner, but sometimes it’s nice to have someone do it for us! 🥰👍🏻

Love your videos. I am trying to catch up and watch one every day. My baby is 8 months now. I would find it very usefull if you could make a playlist of your videos to watch in order of baby growth (does that make sense? Like... How you did with activities for age groups, but for all the videos... ). I get very excited about a lot of ideas only to realise I can't implement them yet. It's good knowledge to come back to, but I'm afraid I will miss some and watch them when my baby is over that phase... Anyway, thank you lots and lots for your videos. Hugs from Romania

Do you have a preference between a top/bottom(pant) outfit vs. a dress for your girls, either Montessori-speaking or otherwise? We’ve dressed my 22 mo. old girl in pants/shorts - but lately I’ve been considering a more dress dominant wardrobe, but trying to learn about how dresses might impact self-dressing activities, her physical movement (do dresses get in the way of all the climbing and tumbling toddlers like to do), and potty learning. Any thoughts?

I love the Montessori method, but it is difficult when your child is not as healthy as a 'normal' child is. For example, my daughter is 20 months old, she already survived cancer, 4 rounds of chemotherapy and a surgery. She gets her food via a feeding tube, vastened on her cheek. So letting her get her shirt on is not an option because of the chance she could rip the bandage off her cheek. The same with potty training, because of her surgery we don't know if she can control her bowels (it could take a couple of months to recover).. so the age is there, but the situation does not really alow it. It is very frustrating for a parent to ' miss' all those marks that you should utilize on according to Montessori.. But nontheless, I learn a lot from your video's, thank you for all your work!
@marie-louiseweerheim4224

Your daughter went through a lot and so did you! My daughter is just a bit older... I can't even imagine walking in your shoes. I can see how missing the marks can be difficult for you. But I think following the pace and interests of your child is more important than following a certain method. The Montesori method seems to be quiet early with teaching your child independence...and that's just not always possible. I hope your girl will be well and you both will enjoy playing together and learning new things.

Hey Ashley, what would you advise me to do with my toddler to interest her into potty trainning. She just turned 3 years old and doesn't seem very keen on it yet, but we have tried in the passed month and even though there was some reluctancy on seating at the potty, we had the typical accidents but also some successes but then we both got too stressed and I decided to stop it. When should I continue and how should I know she is willing to cooperate? Heeeelppp please

My 17 months old is very interested in everything that he can do by himself, except dressing. He knows how to put his arms into shirts, where should his head go, he can put his legs into pants while sitting etc. but most of the days, he doesn't want to dress at all, usually he runs away. Do you have any suggestions? I don't want to pester him to try to dress himself, but I should think he would enjoy more the whole process, if he would do it (this is definitely the case with diaper change). If there is no need to dress, he is happy to experiment with socks and shirts, so I don't understand. I can dress him while running after him (mostly and not without annoyance), but it's not something that we should keep in our daily rutine. I've started to introduce montessori in our life a couple of months ago, so I don't have much practice in this (also first child) I would really appreciate your thoughts on this!

Hey Ashley! Thank you for your videos! I would like to know what’s your opinion ( and maybe montessori general belief) about wearing your baby. Using those baby wraps, slings and etc. if you could talk about it, I’d be really happy. I got one to use with my ( soon to be) newborn while I work from home, but the more I see your videos, the more I think about the need for discovery, exploration and everything could not be met like that. Though I don’t know for how long it could be good. I won’t have maternity leave and I work from home on my computer. thank you :D

I also work from home with my daughter (now 16 months) initially they sleep a lot, so I had a small bassinet next to my desk where she could sleep while I was working or sometimes I would carry her. Other times I would just spread out her floor mat and let her lay there next to me, talking to her occasionally. She spent a good amount of time just doing her own thing even before she could move much, and maybe because of that, she's always been very content to entertain herself.

The problem I found these days is...she’s too independent that she doesn’t want our help..at all...when she’s washing her hands or climbing up the stairs, she doesn’t want me by her side and she would push me away. Is it normal or am I thinking too much?

Quick question with the dresser. My daughter is 14 months. Should I put all her clothes out for her to access or should i just put a couple outfit choices for her to choose from. This is mostly just to figure her not pulling everything out and playing with it. Also, when they do start pulling everything out and playing with it how do you respond to let them know it's not a toy but still want them to be involved.
