I was at a Jaguar meet one day, sat having a drink and chatting to some folk. One of them proudly told me that he worked in the design office. He showed me his phone and pulled up a couple of 3D renderings of a fuel pump that he'd recently completed the design on. "So what consideration do you give for future maintenance, access and the like?" I asked him. I was greeted with a blank stare. "You know, how does a mechanic access that pump if it fails and needs to be replaced?". Eventually he replied... "Well, I wouldn't know, I don't work on the shop floor".

Yep Mechanics are on the low end of the totem pole which makes the owner liable for an enormous repair bill due to excess labor charges. DEsigners and engineers never (or seldom) think about that.

Many parts are designed to be "Lifetime" parts, (the definition of "Lifetime" is rather fluid.) One example is the "lifetime fuel filter" in some vehicles that is a part of the in-tank fuel pump assembly. Designed specifically to NOT be replaced so that the maker can claim lower lifetime emissions from that line of vehicles. If you don't open the fuel system (in any way) to replace a fuel filter, then you don't release fuel vapor into the atmosphere, and makers are actually claiming that as an emissions reduction(!) and have been for a number of years now. The designer from Jaguar knew exactly what you were asking, he just dodged the question.

@@GrayRaceCat whilst I don't doubt some of what you say is true, there are many examples where it is not. One example is suspension bolts which cannot be removed without having to dismantle half of the complete assembly which is easily addressed on reassembly simply by inserting the bolts from the other side. There are many such examples on cars from all manufacturers - just ask any experienced mechanic.

@@tonyjover you and I are on the same page, I simply provided one example of (IMHO) poor design with reference to fuel pumps, as in your example. Another was the first generation Volvo XC70 fuel pump. In my 38 years as a mechanic I ran into many instances of poor design causing extra work for the mechanic (me) and extra cost for the owner.

I am a long time Jag x358 owner. I went months of experiencing fuel related codes that would wildly come and go and got progressively worse. I would get a fuel rail pressure fault but checking the schrader valve always showed normal pressure. I eventually figured out that the sunroof drain tubes became blocked and water would come into the cabin behind the dash and was dripping right on top of the main computer behind the glove box.

The wire trick is genius, I've been wrenching on cars for a long time, haven't seen that one - aluminum foil, tape, epoxy, but never copper wire - great idea, I'm stealing it.

I'm not sure what the bolt is made of, but I'd be at least a little concerned about galvanic corrosion introduced by the dissimilar metals over time making a bad situation worse.

1/16 aircraft cable or wire rope also works great, aircraft cable is stainless, a bit harder to cut, but won't bite you in the butt if you have to pull it again.

As for the high fuel pressure issue, the Jags use a differential sensor reading between the intake manifold pressure sensor and the fuel rail pressure sensor. Any kind of vacuum leak will cause an error in the reading computed by the ECM or actual fuel rail pressure due to the ECM miscalculating the pressure differentials.

@@markseaman4750 Because manifold pressure dictates the need for higher fuel pressure in positive displacement engines. I'm not sure if this car is supercharged or not, but they may use it in normally aspirated engines as well. One of those things you don't really need but "we're engineers and it has to be this way for proper function" kinda deal I guess.

I'd be smart to start videoing as he does just as a backup for reinstallation. Additionally, what amazes me about Ray is his ability to keep verbalizing in his tracks during those frustrating moments how to overcome the problems.

Good job again. It reminded me of the 1960's as I bought an old Mark 10 Jaguar from a mate for 10 pounds. It was full of rust and I knew I would only have it for 6 months as it would fail the MOT test. Walnut tables in the back and it drove like a dream. I even took it round Brands Hatch for a laugh to see how it handled. In one word frightening!

The point about not just parts cannon-ing control modules is so very good. Very rarely do electronics just "go out" on their own. Usually there's an electromechanical or environmental culprit somewhere that caused a transistor junction to cease semiconducting.

It’s a common problem with capped lug nuts, especially Ford and Chrysler. Some tool companies even sell 19.5mm sockets to fit over swollen 19mm lug nuts.

23:45 ohh my good Ray, you need urgently a A/C technical course, same as a doctors keeps learning new skills and medical breakthroughs, this is a DENSO compressor and as most new versions they are "clutchless", that means that the main shaft of the compressor is always rotating with the engine, it is turned ON by a "displacement valve" that receives a pulse by modulation signal from the PCM or the A/C module! The voltage of this PBM signal is between 4.5-10v depending on the temperature inside the cabin! The A/C module is not bad either the compressor, it's the displacement valve that sometimes get stuck and needs to be replaced!

Also, if the compressor was previously replaced because of internal failure, the condenser, drier, and expansion valve should have been replaced, and lines flushed. One more thing to add is that you can not add oil on the low side it must be added on the high side so you do not damage the displacement valve.

@@wowloverforlife I am shure that the original denso compressor was replaced due the displacement valve had an open circuit, those displacement valves don't last longer then 3-4 years, the internal coper windings burn up due to heatcycles. Those type of compressor is really rare to have a internal failure, the main cause of failure is the displacement valve, and they are really cheap around 40 bucks chinesium same as the O'Reilly compressor!

@@sheerwillsurvival2064 yes the chinesium O'Reilly compressor that Ray installed comes with a new displacement valve, but I prefer the original Denso compressor and change only the displacement valve, it's much cheaper then installing a complete Chinese made compressor! But for the parts store it's a better business to sell the whole compressor and resell the core to remanufacturers who only change the 40 bucks displacement valves! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

That compressor removal brought back nightmare flashbacks on my Jaguar S type R. I had to use a engine hoist to lift the engine up 4 inches and to extract the item through the smallest hole possible out of the back of the subframe, I could have extracted a porcupine backwards easier. It took me 2 days and scraped knuckles to do it.

Ray, I have seen that intermittent fuel rail overpressure on my 06 range rover it's a supercharged Jaguar V8 engine ... Turned out to be an injector hanging open letting cylinder compression into the fuel rail... After I ran it on a full can of Berryman's B-12 in only 1 gallon of gas it hasn't recurred... It has been running about a month since then... ( Only because my new injectors haven't made their way across the pond yet... ) Hope this helps you out.

Nice work! You did well to find that fault being it was intermittent. I've never seen a variable displacement compressor valve do that. Usually jam up and sometimes open CCT but an intermittent short is like winning the lottery. Again well done!

Two things. Agree with your bravery but also dumb - you have to go to sleep sometime during the night, and the wife unit might help you sleep with a "love tap" to the head with a baseball bat - wives have loooooong memories. 2nd. Honestly, I've had an intermittent issue like that and it ultimately was the fuse itself. It looked good, tested good, but only after saying eff it and replacing it, did my issue get fixed. Nowadays I replace fuses like you do AC Schrader valves.

Don't know if its been mentioned but the fuel return line will kink and cause high fuel pressure intermittently, so check it where it crosses frame and pinch points. This is just an idea as I see you have many very good possibilities already. Good wrenching

Ray I have seen the SAAB on the transporter. A older 93. Get your TECH 2 out Ready Ray. It looks nice. I have a 2007 Convertible 2.8 V6 GM engine Aero Anniversary with only 3,864 miles on. Still running original brakes etc. Heated Garage all its life. My Wheelchair fits in it, Best Car I have had, Best Seats for my Spinal Injury. Keep Saabs alive Rainman Ray. I worked in a machine shop and a machinist explained the car design process to me. Jag builds an engine and then hangs random pieces of car around it. Perhaps it might have been quicker if you started disassembly in the trunk and stopped when you hit the front bumper. Just a thought...

Repair manual is very short on Jags: "Look at the problem.....try to analyze......throw in the towel......get the Jag to top of a tall cliff somehow.....push and remember "Gravity is your friend.." Check the fuel rail pressure relief valve which should open at approximately 4.14 - 4.48 Bar (60 - 65 psi) to relieve excessive fuel rail pressure. I recall finding an aftermarket valve opening at 5.5 bars (80 psi) in the past. While testing check vacuum line to the valve. Good luck

I have been using the copper wire trick for a very long time. It really does work well in a pinch. I would not do it on a customers vehicle though, I would take the extra time to put in a heli coil to make sure it was properly repaired. Something like a trans pan bolt or valve cover bolt no problem, but something like that that is going to be torqued on, no way. That nut looks like it has been stuck somewhere grinding on something. Last mechanic had nut gravity and ignored it. lol Cant wait to see the shop addition finished up. Have a great Day Ray!

trick for holding the wire on the bolt Ray is to use a but of plumbers tape PTFE work if needed

Great idea Robert Hellen! I form safety wire (stainless) into "U" shape and put on as many as needed to get a torqueable bite. A little "teffy" will make it so much easier. You had my brain doing gymnastics trying to figure out how metal strapping and Teflon tape would help. Then I re-read what you wrote and realized it was just Teflon tape. Where I'm from, plumbers tape is 1" galvanized strapping with holes every inch or so, used to strap pipes, water heater, etc. to keep them plumb/secure.

About the diagnosis...for a minute I thought you altered the situation by monitoring. I once spent days catching a faulty webserver in the act. I just wanted to get a timestamp of the failure and so i could analyse the logs. While monitoring it never failed! I monitored by constantly asking the webserver stuff. Apparently someone thought is was a good idea to suspend one of the webserver processes when it was unused for more than 24 hours. By monitoring I kept it from entering sleep mode.

@Simr Khera You are funny. I give him a year. 2 at most. I disagree. Now Ray is on his own obviously no one is telling him to clean up his mess. Customers don't like messes. They don't like it when the air compressor falls of because someone use wire to fix the treads in a stripped out hole and they don't like it when you keep their cars for weeks at a time. I hear you about new old parts or old new parts... Catalytic converter went bad. Now, I usually insist on OEM to avoid fitment issues (except where OEM is provably inferior to aftermarket replacement / OE), but here replaced with new aftermarket as was half the price and available. Three months, shop went through three more cats trying to get the ECM to stop whining about it. Eventually figured it was not the new cat, but the ECM itself-- needed a tuning update. I had to go halvsies with the shop on the proper flash tooling for my car, but that finally fixed it.

Seems like you have to pull the engine to get to that hole with ez out tools. Plus 3 different metals squished together will create corrosion that will probably lock it in forever.

It's so tight and hard to work on your average mechanic will not do a good job if they do it at all and just take the money.Ive seen it in Las Vegas here they charge the person a large amount of money and the problem still isn't fixed. Ray no oil balance? When replacing compressor you oil balance so you can have the right amount of oil in compressor.
