Back in the day if you wanted a more complex space 4X game, the GalCiv series was your best option. Now they're trying so hard to be Stellaris.

Not really. Sword of the Stars, Masters of Orion, and Space Empires 4 were fairly on par with eachother in depth. GalCiv was one of the more basic 4x games alongside Endless Space. Distant Worlds was probably the most “complex” game besides Aurora 4x. Mankind and Beyond Protocol/After Protocol were really the most complex 4x space games but they were MMOs with a competitive player base and required a monthly subscription.
