Justin talks about writing this song. He was basically out in a field, on a Tuesday afternoon with his dog, also named Tuesday. He was smoking a joint, lying on his back enjoying the beauty of Nature and this came out. He is a fantastic writer and very deep. So many songs "You're Wildest Dreams", "The Story in Your Eyes", "I Know You're Out There Somewhere", "The Other Side of Life", "I'm Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band" and on and on. The entire band is just so talented. Thank you for appreciating their music.

I grew up listening to this group & they are one of my favorites from the 60's-80's. Love their mix of rock with classical music. They have a sound like no other band. They have had so many hit songs such as "The Story In Your Eyes", "Question", "Ride My See-Saw", "I'm Just a Singer (In a Rock and Roll Band)", "Gemini Dream", "The Voice", "Your Wildest Dreams" etc. Many of their records are concept albums & meant to be listened to all at once.

After their success with orchestra on Nights in White Satin, they had to figure out how to get that effect on the road. They starting using a synthesizer called a Mellotron that simulated the sound of the orchestra. It became their signature sound on their terrific seven albums in the late 60's/early 70's. My favourite song was "Question".
@kbrewski14 сағат бұрын
The Mellotron is the most overlooked and iconic instrument that the post Boomer generations don't have a clue about. Wakeman of Yes, Banks of Genesis, King Crimson and Pinder with the Moodies as you point out, all were at the forefront of using the Mellotron in place of full orchestras, and in place of choirs. It was a beautiful instrument but heavy and clunky, but when played by those masters, it was gorgeous. Sad that it's such an anachronism now, but for a few Prog groups.
@johncollins39230 минут бұрын
The melatron was used during the writing of 'Nights' after J.H. brought the song to the others in the band,Mike Pinder who was perfecting the melatron suggested using it & so created the full sound of the song which was created later with a full orchestra!.

When I was in college at Cal, the situation was right so I took a rare mental health day, tripped out and listened to my favorite music as I hiked around campus and Berkeley. Usually tripped with friends but needed some me time. Also rode the BART train under the bay to San Francisco and Golden Gate Park. This was one of the songs I played and it was in fact a Tuesday afternoon. Love the Moodies and I have seen them several times.

The Moody Blues are a real trip. And you must go on this ride! None of their songs are shallow pop songs. They're all very deep and each song is different but takes you to the same place of introspection. Here's a good assortment: "The Story in Your Eyes", "Question", "And the Tide Rushes In", "Ride my Seesaw", "I'm Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band", "Don't You Feel Small", "Melancholy Man", and "It's Up to You."

Mike Pinder on the Mellotron was the Moody Blues' signature sound, like in the intro to this song. Although there was an orchestra used on this album, it was mostly connecting music. Since you love lyrics, you must go through the Moody Blues' catalogue, starting with the next album, In Search of the Lost Chord, and through the next 5, up to 7th Sojourn. Their lyrics are very spiritual/philosophical, and there are many more gorgeous melodies, vocals, and instrumentals.

Nights in Whitw Satin isnt the same without Late Lament and the ending gong.😊❤😊❤😊

This song, as well as Nights In White Satin, are a part of the theme album Days of Future Past. It's very worth listening to the whole album (or CD) from beginning to end. Then you will get the context of each song. I listened to that album so many times in college - it never occurred to me to isolate one song from another. Nor is it mixed like that. The songs flow into each other.

I saw the Moody Blues many times, the last time about 7 or 8 years ago, with original members Hayward, Lodge and drummer Graeme Edge still in the band. RIP Ray Thomas and Mike Pinder(?). Concert was at the iconic old Ryman Theater in Nashville. They played the entire DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED from start to finish!! First time I ever saw them do this (it was for the 50th Anniv of the album). It was so cool to hear it live the way it is supposed to be heard, in order with all the connecting music etc. Hayward's voice isn't quite as strong but still very full and he could still hit the high stuff. An incredible concert at the old iconic Ryman. I was almost dead center in about the 10th wooden pew!

This ode to ‘Tuesday Afternoon’ is so beautiful sounding as the singer contemplates life and love. Probably the best songs by the Moody Blues; it epitomizes youth’s search for life’s meaning so prevalent in the 60s song lyrics. The opening and later wonderful sound at 4:12 that you liked was Mike Pinder’s Mellotron, such a haunting sound! Thanks Debbie for giving us more Moody Blues!

I had mindless job way back in the 80s. The bosses son came in a time or two and asked if I wanted to get high. I said of course. As time went on I realized that it was a Tuesday afternoon kind of thing. It got to the point that he would say Tuesday afternoon, no matter the day, and we we off and smoking. Every time, I hear this song, I am instantly transported back to those days.

Gypsy is my favorite Moody Blues song. It's from their album To Our Children's Children's Children. Incredible album, start to finish. When I hear Gypsy, it makes me think of someone who's looking for something they can't find. Who's lost and can't find their way home. Someone who just doesn't know where to go. Someone who doesn't know how they got where they got. And now they don't know what to do. I don't know if anyone has told you, but these songs are from the CONCEPT album DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED. It's basically a musical journey through a day. The songs go from morning to night. The songs are all linked together. It's meant to be listened to as a whole in order. I know the younger generations don't seem to "get" the concept of themed concept albums, but in the late 60s and 70s, there were many iconic Progressive Rock concept albums. Unfortunately you started your exploration of this album by going directly to the FINAL song, Nights in White Satin. So you're kind of listening to the album backwards. And unfortunately that's what just about every reactor does, start with Nights in White Satin because that's probably their most iconic and recognized song. The album is worth doing in order to "get the flow", with all the musical links etc, but maybe it's too late now. Sorry to rant there a bit,but it gets frustrating for us old fogies.....

I'm not blaming him, nor was I rude to him. Lighten up Francis.
