My parents received one for their wedding in 1947. I've been caring for it since 1990. I've propagated many for my family. Right now one of them is blooming. I think they are awesome plants. 5:28

An excellent video about care, propagation and advice of problems that can occur with this plant. I hadn't realised that it was poisonous. I enjoyed viewing until the 17:19 end and gave you a big thumbs up. Thank you for visiting my channel. It reminded me that I hadn't been by your channel for some time. I have a tree in my kitchen that I have had for about ten years, when my friend moved she threw it out for the trash I told her I will take it, I really did not want it but could not bear to see it trashed while still alive, it is very neglected, I thought it was a dumb cane but I did not see one like it on your video so maybe it is not, when it gets as tall as the ceiling I just cut it off, I have not been successful with rooting the top piece, you have inspired me to give it a little love now and then, maybe I can get it looking better, great video
@moodyblooms
@moodyblooms 4 жыл бұрын
I am the same way! It is so hard to see perfectly good plants tossed out. Are you letting the cutting callus over before placing in water or soil? Maybe that will help with the success rate.

If they are fungus gnats then you can water or spray the soil with 1 part hydrogen peroxide and 4 parts water. You can also place those little yellow sticky traps near the plant. Go to 8:53 of my video kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZCZZ4xrq85paNk to see the fungus gnats.

I have noticed some little black dots on the underside of my diffenbachia's leaves. They come off easily if I touch them, but I don't know what they are? Some type of fungal spore? I have looked at signs of spider mites/thrips/etc and it doesn't seem to be that. Any idea?

Centipedes are not harmful to plants, but instead feed on insects and other small critters in the soil. They can actually protect your plant against its real enemies, so you might want to consider letting them live. Thanks for watching and for supporting my channel. I really appreciate it! :)

If it is more than 50% of the leaf definitely remove it. You can trim just the brown edges if you prefer. But, you need to figure out what is causing the issue first.

If you put your finger in the soil and it is damp, then do not water. It could be wilting from overwatering as well.

@moodyblooms
@moodyblooms Жыл бұрын
If you get a standard potting soil it may pack too tightly and drown out the roots. I always add in perlite and/or coarse sand to add aeration. Like many houseplants, dieffenbachia plants need a soil that retain some water but also one that drains well. Hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching.

Thank you so much for this video. Over the past couple of months since purchase, a few of the leaves on mine have turned yellow and come away. It now looks sparse and a bit silly. Should I cut it all the way back and let it start over? I'll be careful not to over water and I think I need to add more to my soil as it seems to be just plain compost. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!!

Yellow leaves can be an over watering or an under watering issue. The plant is definitely unhappy, so you need to figure out what the cause may be. You can definitely cut off the top and propagate.

If the leaves are yellow, should I pull just the leaf off or the whole stem with the leaf?

I take off everything if it yellows. It will eventually spread anyway.

My plant leaf is big and breaks in the middle of the leaf center? Is this a problem ?

Definitely a problem. Is it near an air vent or heater by chance? They hate cold/hot drafts of air. It could also be lack of humidity.

Great question...If you have gnats in the soil a mix of 1 part hydrogen peroxide and 4 parts water will do the trick. I have a pest eradication video found here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZCZZ4xrq85paNk at 8:54 I cover fungus gnats.

My plant is four feet tall. The top leaves are always brown and crusty. The rest of the plant is fine. Any ideas? Thank you.

Brown tips could be caused by uneven watering. Keep your watering practices a little more regular and never let your plant sit in water. Leaves that are curled with brown edges could be caused by excessive fertilizer application.

I have tried to save my dieffenbachia tropic by cutting off the yellow leaves but now the stem of that leaf is turning yellow and I’m worried it’s going to effect the main trunk. What can I do to save it?

Yellow leaves can be from a number of issues. Most of the time (not always) it is an overwatering issue.

@@moodyblooms I do know it was over watered by my other half hahaha!! I’m worried that the stem of said leaf is now getting mushy (the stem of the effected leaf, not the trunk) is there anything I can do to help it? Shall I remover the stem all the way down to the trunk?

You can try to save by cutting above the yellow part of the stem. It may be too late, but worth a try.

Good morning, I was repotting my plant and it snapped in half from the root base. Help...not sure what to do. Can I stick it back in the fresh potting soil and will it re-root?

I would try propigating in water to establish roots first.

I agree with Desiree, I'd put them in water if it was my plant.
