Today I take a look at the brand new Moog Mavis and break down the architecture of the synth in a clear flowchart. This helps to see which components are available, and how modular and flexible they are. I use the flowchart to demonstrate a few patch ideas, and how the semi modular synth can be integrated in a growing modular setup.

This video is fantastic, it is exactly what I've been looking for. I just bought a mavis, it will be my first synth and the first musical instrument I've ever owned. Before buying one i watched a lot of videos about it and picked up a few ideas here and there, but nothing I've watched so far has this kind of depth. You've explained things in a very clear way, and also accessible to someone very new to modular synthesis. Thanks so much for this video!!

Hey, thanks for your message! When I released this video the 'hype' was a bit over already, but of course I hope people still come across it and get something out of my approach! Think you made a good choice, I still have this in a prominent place in my setup. Enjoy!

I have checked out some synths, after having bought the M32 and the sisters also. But the Mavis is my favorite. It sounds fantastic, and the possibilities are endless, kind of reduced to the max. Helps to focus, although not limiting. And I'm sure it will hold up for years to come. Your video here helps a lot to go further. How could I miss this flowchart?

Very nice video, and very nice patches ! I've just a question about the patch at 11:03 : why the output of EG go in the output of ONE ? and not in the input ONE(-5) Thanks :)
@MonotrailTechTalk
@MonotrailTechTalk Жыл бұрын
Thank you, glad you liked it! And very well spotted, that uhmmm, is just a massive patching error on my side! As I show in the diagram before it, the EG should be patched into the ONE (-5) mixer input! NOT in the ONE output as I did in the example. The reason why I didn't notice is, well, because it still works apparently. Guess that is just how the circuitry works, but don't patch like me :)

How did you connect the Mavis within the Moog case? I don't see any power supply 🤔 Does Mavis comes with the ribbon cable? Thanks for the video!
@MonotrailTechTalk
@MonotrailTechTalk Жыл бұрын
Hi there! Mavis comes with a basic eurorack ribbon cable, so you can connect it to a powered modular case easily. I build in basic power supply modules with flying bus boards in both the 60hp moog case, as well as the 84 hp DIY case I use in this video :)

@@MonotrailTechTalk I dont know,...for example on the Xaoc Batumi,a quad lfo module there is a reset sync function where u can plug a minijack and i dont understand this function...
@MonotrailTechTalk
@MonotrailTechTalk 2 жыл бұрын
Ah I see! I thought you meant on the Mavis and didn't understand :) You can often find a reset input on oscillators, regular ones for audio, as well as low frequency oscillators (LFOs), like the Batumi. Normally you can pick a waveform on an oscillator, like a sinewave for example, and it repeats that waveform forever, with a set speed. If you send a clock or trigger into the reset, the module will 'restart' the selected waveform from the start. ' reset' is also often called 'hard sync' There's a little section with image to show what I mean in this video at 4:27 kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5vSaqObd5uUpas

Just so frustrating that I cannot reproduce one at 13:29, I don't know what sequençor you use, but I do not have the same exciting results.
@MonotrailTechTalk
@MonotrailTechTalk 6 ай бұрын
Hi there! Made this video a while ago, but pretty sure I only used the Korg SQ-1 you see in some shots. So there's nothing fancy going on with the sequence. Just a gate and 1v/oct. The tuning of the LFO is crucial in that patch, so make sure to fiddle with the LFO frequency!
@boyincurls
@boyincurls Жыл бұрын
I’m having trouble connecting my Beatstep pro pitch output to the 1v/oct input on the mavis. Bsp sends 0-10v while mavis accepts -5 to 5v. I know this might have a very simple answer but I thought I should ask anyway. Is this solved by using an attenuverter?
@MonotrailTechTalk
@MonotrailTechTalk Жыл бұрын
Hi there! No, an attenuator will destroy the precious 1v/oct scaling of the pitch signal. The BSP indeed sends only 0 to 10 volt, so wat you need to do is start with the lowest note. The lowest C on BSP is 0 volt, from there you have 5 octaves to play with, everything above 5v wont work well with mavis. The tool that would work is an 'Offset generator.' That could generate -5v, and if you mix that in with the BSP it would have a range of -5 to 5. But the mixing has to be extremely precise, again because of the 1v/oct signal.

So, to recap: MOOG Mavis is a clone of the Behringer CRAVE, which in turn is a clone of the MOOG Mother 32. In other words, MOOG cloned itself... No wait! This one has a WaveShaper! Oh my gosh! How could I live without one! The CRAVE still costs half the price of a Mavis, though. Not a Eurorack module, but! For the price, I still prefer the CRAVE.

@Annatar3469
@Annatar3469 2 жыл бұрын
@@MartinDoudoroffLLC I think the Werkstatt is some sort of proto-mother-32 (minus the sequencer). So I suspect Moog will be releasing a full synth (probably with sequencer) of which the Mavis is a stripped down version. Maybe there will be a second VCO so it can be some sort of Moog Easle
