Hello guys and gays! I'm in a super happy mood right now because we know what 4 of the season 2 episodes will be based on!!!! Tiny lesbians Thingumy and Bob have been confirmed for season 2 episode 8 babyyyy!!!!!!
But I digress. Here's a little video of some clips and images (all of which I've posted on tumblr before so if you're from there you'll recognise them lol) of various cast and crew members discussing Moomintroll and Snufkin's relationship in the series because I'm a repressed bisexual who craves representation hahaa anyway
it basically looks like moomintroll has this inner conflict of wanting to stay at home with his family yet also wanting to go out on his own and explore the world (like pappa did in HIS youth); I personally feel like Snorkmaiden represents the former (talking about their future children, their relationship basically being very heteronormative and like a childish version of a stereotypical marriage) whilst Snufkin represents the latter with his free and wandering spirit, so I hope the series will end with Moomintroll choosing to travel away from home and thereby choosing Snufkin. guess we'll see. I mean the theme song (and basically every other song on the soundtrack) is about them two which feels /very/ significant.

EDIT: Hey! It's November now. I know people don't tend to read descriptions but I would just like to say that I don't think snufmin will actually become a romantic relationship in the series, at least not explicitly. I think it's kinda shitty that it has romantic subtext but I suppose they have the "excuse" that that's the same as the original books; though of course they were published at a time when LGBT+ representation, particularly in children's books, was completely impossible, so it's really not an excuse at all. I could talk about this all day and there's so many things to consider but I'll leave it there for now.

FÅR jag gå på toa? - Am I allowed to go to the bathroom? Jag FÅR gå på toa. - I am allowed to go to the bathroom. But sometimes it can be used forcedly, Like “will have to.” Om ingen annan gör det, FÅR jag - If no one else wants to do it, I will have to. Jag vill inte, så du FÅR göra det - I don’t want to, so you will have to do it. So the right translation would have, as OP said, be; “Moomintroll is ALLOWED to like...” But you accidentally took it as the other option. I think that this is so wonderful because it clearly goes beyond a "fandom" level of desire for that kind of a storyline (not that there's anything wrong with that). Tove Jansson was a bisexual woman who spent the majority of her later life in a committed relationship with another woman, and that part of her had to have influenced her writing. Thingumy and Bob, who were named Tofslan and Vifslan in Swedish (stand-ins for Tove and her then-girlfriend Vivica), were pursued by the Groke, who's metaphorical significance was referenced in the video, and Tove's life partner, Tuulikki Pietilä, was the direct influence for Too-Ticky. I grew up reading the Moomin series, and going through it again when I was a bit older, it stands out to me how much the themes center around love, acceptance and not just acknowledging differences, but welcoming and celebrating them. It is so heartwarming to see that the creative team for this show are exploring this part of Tove and the Moomin series, and that we live in a time where this beloved franchise can have certain parts of it finally brought to light! Edit: I'm sorry, I realize this comment is an absolute TOME, I just have a lot of feelings about Moomins XD

It sounds like tho Snufmin is prob cannon, its supposed to end up as a tragedy. But these are new times were in, its becoming more acceptable to be who you are freely. They've put a spin on some things that push moominvalley apart from the rest of the adaptations so maybe this wont be a tragedy. I don't think you will have to worry about that, honestly this fandom is so wholesome and i feel like people would be okay with what the show turns out to be. If we compare this to Voltron, where it definitely crashed and burned. There were several factors that led to this. The show kept teasing and teasing and queerbating that it left people furious. And honestly the fandom got quite toxic after season 3 or so because they were dead set on a specific ship becoming canon(sorry for the small rant)

I don't think that would happen in this fandom. I've seen most people respect and even join others ship, even though it would contradict another. This fandom seems to be filled with multishippers and respected rare pares witch I love. Although I have seen the tinyst bit of snorkmaden bashing it's not overly extreme and people go to defend her (which is great cuz she's bb) overall fluffy and accepting.

ooOOOoooh, how this fell. Season 2 was relatively weaker than season 1 in my personal opinion, but the later episodes were absolutely fantastic. Though, with the fact they said they'd touch upon Snufkin and Moomin's relationship more, Snufkin only appeared for a specific few episodes, on in which Moomin was absent. I'd say they're just playing at our heartstrings by this point, but the season was just as good as always, even though it was still only 13 eps.

I also read the official Moomin comics by Tove Jansson and there was a comic strip where Moomin was really excited to see Snufkin again. Then Little My asked him "Do you like him so much?" and Moomin started stuttering and blushing. It's definitely canon

It's been renewed for a fourth season! They're currently working on it now and it has an estimated air date of late 2024. There's also a feature film under planning.

For those of ye who may not know,by the end of the books there's a part were moomin remembers snorkmaiden, but a "the girl with golden bangs" and she barely becomes a character that exists to moomin XD And a lot of hints and indirect quotes of moomin totally falling for snufkin. And even though we can never make it canon anymore,its highly acknowledged that tove definitely planned on snufkin and moomin to be a couple. But probably kept it vague for the fantasy. BUT INSTEAD TOTTALLY MADE TOOTICKY AND INVISIBLE GIRL I THINK?! CANON GAY CUZ SCREW THE LAW SAID TOVE AS SHE MARRIED A WOMEN PROBABLY MIDDLE FINGER UP AT THE FINNISH LAWS XD

First of all, thank you for putting this together, it's really interesting and helpful since I'm dwelling in this fandom again (after like, uhm, 20 years?!). It is a lot more grown-up than the 90s show, which I genuinely appreciate. But I think the "target group" consists of kids age 6-12 (?). They didn't explore the relationship between Moomintroll / Snorkmaiden very "deeply", so they can't do it with Moomintroll / Snufkin either. I would very much be convinced of the contrary, though. 🥳 *I will go down with this ship* 😜

The target audience is actually all ages; they expect the whole family to watch the episodes and discuss them together. They're definitely exploring Moomintroll and Snufkin's relationship deeply, having studied the psychology of the characters and everything, though I don't think they'll ever make it explicitly romantic.

Moomin is the only person Snufkin will always come back to and Snufkin is the one Moomin will always feel lonely without. Even surrounded by all friends and family, Moomin will always miss Snufkin when he is away. Their caring and devotion to one another can EASILY be seen as more than simple platonic friendship. tl;dr - they're boyfriends.
