I have the brain rot so here's a little personal analysis: The relationship between snufkin and moomin is heavily romance coded in the original text, at least in my opinion as a native speaker. Tove, from what I've read, had at least one relationship (Vivica Bandler) end because of the other woman's inability or disinterest in commiting to their relationship (i.e leaving her husband, and she also allegedly kept many other female lovers, which could be seen as her wanting more "freedom" in her relationships compared to Tove) but they remained close friends. Snuffkin is, in my interpretation, very afraid of liking someone "too much" and how that would affect the lifestyle and freedom which he so enjoys. Being too attached to someone and have them be equally attached to him, in his mind, would mean ha can't come and go as he pleases. In other words, he has some commitment issues but he still cares very much for his friends, and especially moomin. It's very likely that Tove's own experiences bled into her work, and considering the time she wrote in; parallels and allegories would be the safest way to write queer characters and still get them published. Adaptations leave room for interpretation and I don't think "snufkin and moonin love each other romantically" is a particularly bold one. Moomin is filed with queer themes and allegories and I'd be surprised if Tove Janson would have minded those themes being given the room to be just a little less subtext and a bit more text.

I think that’s kind of the point. In the books, Snufkin is starting to feel bad, possibly a bit guilty, for Moomintroll, who he knows is always so secretly disappointed when he leaves, but always tells him that it’s okay, and that everyone needs time for themselves (partly because he admires Snufkin so much, which Snufkin knows.) In the books he doesn’t hallucinate him, but he has to tell himself that that is not what he should be thinking about in that moment. It’s is meant to be the same scene, I believe, only to get the point across, they use hallucination instead of Snufkin just thinking of Moomintroll.

It's sort of a remake of a 90's cartoon (and I think there's comics or something too) called Moomin, it's about Moomin and the adventures he has. Only one season out so far, but I think there's another coming out at some point.

The dragon episode is a perfect analogy of their relationship, if Moomin has his way, he would ‘leash’ Snufkin to him which wouldn’t make any of them happy in the long run. Snufkin doesn’t like to be tied down in one place, he wants to travel. Moomin would only ever want to be with Snufkin and not his other friends or his family. This is why Snufkin has to be a bit mysterious and travel every year, cause if he doesn’t, even though he enjoys being with Moomin a lot, it needs to be for a limited time in the year.

Is Snufkin really this attached to Moomintroll in the books? From what I know, Snufkin would NEVER hallucinate Moomintroll or have a nightmare he's moved on with someone else-- much less try to track down someone like Teety-woo. I always thought his feelings were subtly on the inside.

I haven't read the books, but from what I've read from other people that have, he isn't THAT attached to Moomintroll and he even is quite distant in some of the books (due to how Tove was feeling with her husband). But, apparently, in the last book where the Moomins are away, Snufkin really starts to notice Moomin's absence and actually becomes depressed about it. Anyways, the 2019 series is based off the 90s anime, not the books. They changed Snufkin a bit (and even gave him a pair of episodes) because they felt that he didn't have too much dialogue in the anime. I personally love this change, I don't think it takes away Snufkin's mysterious aura. Edit: Also, it is shown in the 2nd episode Moominvalley that Snufkin might have some sort of anxiety

I feel like in this iteration the staff didn't want to make Snufkin this cool, has-it-all-together kind of character and really wanted us to see the emotional side of him. HOWEVER, note that the only times we see immense emotion it's usually when he's alone. Take a look at how he reacts when he sees Moomintroll again-- Moomin rushes to him with arms wide open to embrace Snufkin, but Snufkin just cooly leans against the railing with the fishing pole in hand. I think what we're supposed to gleam from that is Snufkin is /purposely/ distant be it because he's afraid of his feelings (look back to the seen with Teety-woo and his feelings on admiration), or just that he doesn't want others (especially Moomin) to see that he isn't as calm and collected as he appears. However, I think this is something Moomin is becoming aware of (look back to the scene with Too-Ticky on lost people). This iteration IS different, but I think the portrayal here isn't bad and rather refreshing! :)

God, I remember The Moomins from back when I was a kid, that old, badly animated cartoon. Now, I have no idea how this popped out in my recommendations, but I clicked on it with a tear of nostalgia in my eye. And what I got was a beautiful gay love story. Amazing. Glad kids today are getting to watch this kind of cartoons.

Whether it's gay or just deep friendship between two males, I feel that it's really healthy to show that these two really care for each other and aren't afraid to show it. I bet Tove Jansson would approve this depiction of their relationship. I really love how even though moomin is always sad that Snufkin has to leave for winter, he is understanding that it's just what Snufkin needs and it makes him happy. And after all, Snufkin always comes back. Just so healthy and beautiful how they are always there for each other, but they also respect each other's boundaries, even when it may hurt a little sometimes since love is very complicated and individual thing for everyone. 90's moomin cartoons were my childhood and I'm always going to be biased towards them, but this new CGI moomin series looks very lovely. I hope this moomin generation bring as much happiness and comfort as it did for me when I was a child. In my family, when you got sick there was no cure like hot blackcurrant juice and watching tape recorded moomin episodes. I hope those kind of warm memories are now being made with this new version. Thank you for this compilation, I had a very bad day today and now I feel a lot better.

Ok so There is a way that Moon x snufkin is cannon because they were influenced/developed/manifested of the creator's husband (or ex-husband while she was making Moominvalley) where he would go away for a long time and she would sit at home and wait for him, and when he kept on coming back to leave again (because of his work, I think). She actually said in one of the interviews that this was where she got here idea for Moominvalley, and if anything it's basically saying "hell yeah they're in love". After the divers they (her and her ex-husband)became really good friends and she actually preferred it that way. WHAT I MEAN TO SAY IS SNUFKIN X MOOMIN IS ADORABLE AND CANNON

This show is so real that its impossible to cleanly parse the characters for their "meaning". Like are we supposed to want them to be together in spite of flaws? Are we supposed to see their anxiety/detachment as reasons for them not to be together, and instead hope they resolve their issues separately, but supporting one another as friends? Is snufkin supposed to represent a mature understanding of what is healthy for their relationship, or an immature stubbornness? For a kid's show there are a LOT of ways to read these characters and their behaviors towards one another. Its kinda insane. In some ways though its perfect because growing into yourself is complicated and there arent any easy answers. I want the best for these two :(
