In the geogrphy room of the gymnasium I attended was a globe of the moon, where somewhat less than half was blank.

It may be of interst to you that Russell now does indeed have a crater named after him on the moon - Russell crater, jointly named for both John and Henry N Russell (of Hertzsprung-Russell diagram fame), on the western edge of the Sea of Storms (Oceanus Procellarum). Other Russell-y named objects include asteroid 1762 Russell, and Martian Crater Russell, found on the southern plains of Noachis Terra.

While I very much appreciate eloquent speech, let's not fool ourselves into thinking that such style represents either "elegance" or "precision." Elegance is most often marked by refined simplicity, free from opulent excess. And precision is similarly defined by exactness of detail with no interfering bulk or confusion. This style of writing, however, is best described as "florid." It is showy, ornate, and dare I say even obsequious at times. The purpose of writing is to communicate, and if a person's style conceals the message then one would be forgiven for assuming that what that person wished to communicate in actuality was their knowledge of fancy phrases. The term "purple prose" was coined for a reason.
