This video shows a descent from 17,000ft into Charlottetown, Canada.
Strong winds create significant turbulence on landing.
Engine leaning procedures during the descent are explained. ATC is recorded.
Your comments & suggestions are always welcome!
Happy Landings,
Capt. Guido

Sounds like Cody, Wyoming. I found my maximum cross wind limit in my Cessna 206 G is 25 kn. Fortunately,other area airports often have less wind. Greybull is often quiet when Cody is blowing and they have a pilot lounge

Beautifully done! Question: at one point, you indicate speed brakes up to stabilize approach. Could you explain? I have a Columbia 400 with speedbrakes, but deploying them on approach is not recommended.
@GuidoWarnecke
@GuidoWarnecke 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark, Stabilizing means just to get back to target speed on the approach. It was a bit turbulent and the speed =was fluctuation, so I added 10 knots or so over normal. I do not know the Colombia and the size of the speed brakes. Relatively small speed brakes in the Money. They get you an extra 500 fpm descent rate at the same airspeed or a deceleration of airspeed Not sure why Colombia does not recommend them on an approach. If you have not done already, please consider subscribing to my channel, that helps a lot. Happy Landings, Capt. Guido

@@GuidoWarnecke Hi Guido: Thanks so much for your quick and informative response. I now see that I had misunderstood what you were saying in the video. I thought you meant you were keeping speed brakes up through touchdown. In fact, now I understand that you were deploying them to get back to target airspeed. That would also be a recommended use in the Columbia. Thanks again! Mark PS: I'm already subscribed and enjoy all your videos!

Interesting. I also own an Ovation and have 2 questions: 1. You extend your flaps at speed higher than the white arc? And even full flaps before the white arc is reached? 2. You always land with speed brake or was it only here because of turbulences? Thanks.
@GuidoWarnecke
@GuidoWarnecke Жыл бұрын
Hello Khang, I’m not aware that I have set the flaps outside the published speeds. White arc is typically only for full flaps. I cannot recall full flap speed for this aircraft. SB on for landing was because of turbulence. Will check. Thanks for the comment and Happy Landings, Capt. Guido

What is a good trainer plane to purchase? I am beginning flight school in the fall and feel that owning my own plane would save me time and money. I have MSE, curious as to why you used the speed brake to stablize in descent. Loss of lift with potential cross wind would seem to create a hazard. For me I ususally use first flaps at this wind component. Higher speed at landing alleviates porposie tendency and also more quickly the go around given the probability of a go around. Would appreciate your comments on the speed brake. I never use them unless I am high on approach or control left me too high...Bill
@GuidoWarnecke
@GuidoWarnecke 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Bill, I do not consider myself as an experienced pilot on Mooneys. I used the speed brakes to bring the airspeed quickly to desired target speed (I think 80 knots). They come out and retract very quickly, so I see. no hazard. What I have seen so far is that the Mooney is a clean aircraft and tends to float with excessive speeds on landing. Not desirable in a crosswind. Happy Landings, Capt, Guido

@GuidoWarnecke

Hi Manila, back to the basics is always good... For the ferry flights, I stopped doing single engine and multi-engine piston aircraft. The logistics with Avgas world-wide is very complicated and there is always the elevated risk of engine failures, compared to a turning engine. The ditching of the B737 off the coast of Hawaii just showed the opposite though ;-) Happy landings, Guido

One question: does a strong cross wind landing contribute to distort the landing gear ?
@GuidoWarnecke
@GuidoWarnecke 11 ай бұрын
The landing gear of a light aircraft is not designed to take side loads. So you have to straighten out the aircraft before touchdown with the rudder. Alternative you use the slip method in wich you touch down with the upwind wheel first. Airlines can accept a certain side load om the landing gear. Happy Landings, Capt. Guido See attached video. Note the typo error: I wrote: "downwind wheel", correct is "upwind wheel" kzbin.info/www/bejne/opbWpq2VmdF-mcksi=rBs40bLeJ3hutdpY&t=179

another great video! why does the mooney have speedbrakes? that's pretty uncommon for propeller aircraft aside from motorgliders, no?
@GuidoWarnecke
@GuidoWarnecke 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Thomas, the Mooney is a very aerodynamically "clean" aircraft. I aircraft with piston engine you cannot bring the engine to idle in a descent from altitude because of possible shock cooling the engine. So the speed brakes help a lot. They normally add 500 feet per minute descent rate at the same engine power. Alternatively - that is what I did - you can use them to slow the aircraft down during an approach. If you approach 10 knots too fast for example, you would need 1,000 feet more runway. But you are right, not may piston engine aircraft have speed brakes. Happy Landings, Capt. Guido

@GuidoWarnecke
@GuidoWarnecke 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. It is actually easy. Not sure what the max demonstrated cross wind component is for the Mooney. Important is that you are able to control the aircraft at all times. If not, then a go around is in order and land at another airport with less crosswind. Typically airplanes are designed to handle a direct crosswind of 50% of their stall speed. If a Cessna 172 has a stall speed of 45 knots it can handle around 22 knots or so. Happy Landings, Capt. Guido

Can you explain the speed breaks a bit more? Why are they used to stabilize the approach? Or is that only in windy conditions
@GuidoWarnecke
@GuidoWarnecke 2 жыл бұрын
Aircraft with piston engines have an inherent problem: you cannot reduce (line in a turbine) the power for the descent too much. This might cause an excessive cooling rate of the cylinders and possible cracks. The speed brakes allow you to descent with a good rate and at the same time keep the engine power on. That is the main function of speed brakes in piston engine aircraft. Especially the Mooney is aerodynamically very "clean" and would speed up quickly in a descent otherwise. Happy Landings, Capt. Another "Top-Gun" episode! I often thought about the issue of retracting flaps & gears (mistakenly) at the same time upon landing. I guess it's possible in some aircraft(?).
@GuidoWarnecke
@GuidoWarnecke 2 жыл бұрын
Normally, the gear retraction is not possible on the ground as a weight on wheels switch 9senses that the aircraft sits not he ground and the struts are compressed) presents this. Switch can be faulty - and it has happened. Many times. Happy landings, Capt. Guido

Hello, sir. I don't know what it is about your videos but I find them so much more enjoyable than others I watch. I do love watching the larger A380 videos but you are always flying something different and your knowledge of the flight controls regardless of the platform never ceases to amaze me. That's a lovely Mooney, by the way. Your skills are an inspiration and I look forward to many more excellent adventures as I live vicariously through your flights. Safe travels and all the best to you.

Did you land with the speed brakes deployed? Is that helpful in a crosswind?
@GuidoWarnecke
@GuidoWarnecke 3 жыл бұрын
The speed brakes were used to bring the speed to the normal touchdown speed. The Mooney tends to float otherwise. I just learned from experienced Mooney pilots that there is no limitations to land with the speed brakes on. Best is to use them as much or as little as needed. Happy Landings, Capt. Guido
