Using wheel stands to balance a new tire setup never occurred to me, Del. Thanks, mate. You just saved me a ton of money when I get my little single lift shop running out of my little shed at my house. I’ve learned all kinds of cool tricks from you. If you and Penny ever wanna come visit out to Kentucky for a vacation sometime you got an open invite at my place anytime. I live right on the lake. Killer fishing spot to boot.

Thank you so much for your kind words my friend, its just the simple things that can make life a little easier and get stuff done without drama.. Thank you also so much for your awesome invite, it would be amazing to visit Kentucky, what a beautiful place you live, and when we finally get the projects, and all the other things done and make some time for a vacation, we're coming over to America for a long break and visit some of the incredible people we have got to know on KZbin.. maybe next year, or as soon as we can make it happen.. Thank you again and have a great week.. Del & Pennyx

Amazing how it turned out! Wish my wheels were that clean and gorgeous haha. One thing you should add next tire change around is fit a 90degree valve, especially at the front. It will make life so much easier.

Hi buddy, I know what you mean, like the Triumph ones, I'm ok for now, as I use my own air line at home, which has a flexible lock on hose that can get in between the discs, but you're right, those flat 90degree valves are brilliant !

Thanks buddy, its gonna get a bit more radical yet, im junking the tail unit (gonna hang it on the wall), and will be re-making the entire back end. small and aggressive looking, it'll make the back end look a lot more beefy and intense..hoping to get it on the road this season.

Thanks for the video on the balancing, last time I replaced my discs I couldnt find my taps so I used the bolts and isopropyl alcohol and ran the bolts through multiple times until it was clean, marked the bolts with nail polish (after loctite'ing them in and torquing them) and checked them frequently for movement.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 6 жыл бұрын
Good practice there buddy, as you are not cutting metal with the tap, just cleaning out the old threadlock and the alcohol will dissolve it chemically, so that's a great hack, thanks for sharing... if you don't wanna invest in a tap & die set though, a great little side step for that expense is just buy yourself M6, M8 and M10 taps from a tool shop and you can grab hold of them with some locking pliers, perfect for cleaning threads!

Enjoyed the vid...nice job as usual. You didn't mention it, but I am assuming you were applying anti-sieze lubricant on the axles? One thing I noticed is that you choked way up on your torque ratchet when torquing the front axle pinch bolts. I was always told that in order to get accurate torque you must grip the wrench back on the knurling. What say you?

Another great informative video until I retired I had been a tyre fitter all my working life from wheel barrow tyres to massive earthmover tyres static balancing is a better than nothing and have worked in a tyre shop for years that just had a bull's eye balancer similar thing just finds the heavy spot and no complaints from customers about wheel vibration so it really does work did watch the other balancing video a long time ago with the spocked wheel and putting the weights either side and not just on one side cheers have a good day and penny as well 👍

Might not make a difference, but I could not help wondering, will the three missing bolts effect the balancing of the wheel? Probably will just counter each other out, would be interesting to check and find out though.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 6 жыл бұрын
The three nuts are purely to hold the sprocket in place while i order a set of 6 new locking nuts.. and the wheel was balanced with the sprocket carrier off buddy, so no effect on the wheel.
@HalfdeadRider
@HalfdeadRider 6 жыл бұрын
For some reason I did not notice that you done it without the sprocket on, I would have wondered about that too lol (as I think you know from another comment). I did wonder about the three bolts, I know how sensitive balancing a wheel can be as I used to work in a tyre and exhaust centre years ago. However I don't know the effect of the sprocket being on or off or on with bolts missing compared to them being on/in, we never done bike wheels. I thought the extra weight on one side might possibly change the weights needed.

Do you torque each bolt by 1/3 till you get to final torque? I was taught to divide by 3 and torque 1/3 each time not the final torque from the go. So every bolt gets torqued evenly......... Thanks
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 6 жыл бұрын
That's generally the drill for a gasket joint, especially on a large item, like a cylinder head, or a primary cover, and you torque them in sequence as well, but these are shouldered bolts and they mate metal to metal so from the point they ground against the wheel rim, there is no more than 1/8th of a turn left before full torque is reached, so in this case, I nip them up by hand, torque them down to full torque straight away, and then do a second pass, in sequence, in case the first bolts still need a little more, works every time.... but once again, in 'squashing' applications, such as head gaskets, etc., you do use the rule of 1/3's...

Looking great Dell, I am redoing wheels on my old H2 Kawasaki and wasn't sure if the cush drives needed replaced. I wonder if you could speak to the purpose of cush drives and the importance of replacing them. Thanks for all you and Penny do for the riding community and all of us do it yourselfers.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Monte, there is a little test for cush drives... lay the wheel down and drop the sprocket carrier in to place, then rotate the sprocket back and forth, feeling for any freeplay, if there's more than about 10mm, or if they are particularly squashy, then just drop a new set in mate, they don't cost much and readily available from people like Wemoto... good with it, all the best, D&Px

All looking great Del, you have proved your point about those wheels not needing a clear coat if they stand up to brake cleaner! I am curious how much play you'd expect on a cush drive before replacement? Mine has about 10mm but the bike has now done 35K and it's a 2001, is that a normal amount of play? Thanks in advance for you help.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Charlie, The generally accepted test for worn out cush drives was:- With the back wheel on the ground, and the engine in neutral, grab hold of the back sprocket top and bottom, and "Rotate" it back and forth.. if there is more than half inch of rotational freeplay slop... then replace them.. HOWEVER.. if you feel the gears snatch as you short shift, then stick a new set in, they dont cost much, and will tighten up the drive take-up a lot..

Great job Delboy 👍 will be interested to see how you get on with the ebc discs...i have had a set of ebc contours for roughly 12000 miles and 1 of the front discs has very worn bobbins on it...they are sort of coming apart and allowing the disc to wobble...alot. Making a change to armstrong discs soon i think 😕 shame as the ebc pads are great
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Sean.. ive had EBC discs for years, iv done at least two other videos i can think of where i fitted them to our other bikes.. i always use the EBC Copper Sintered HH pads with them and they're beef... And thats the first time ive heard of the bobbins wearing... thats not right mate.. its not a known or common fault, maybe you have a faulty pair... if it was me, before i lashed out the silly money a new set costs.. id talk with EBC direct.. they are a British company and have a customer care line.. let them know mate, even send them one, you never know, they may just replace them for you..? wear and tear is one thing, but that sounds more like premature failure..!
@seanhellen
@seanhellen 6 жыл бұрын
Moonfleet41 Hi Del, thanks for the advice...might give em a bell and see what happens. Sounded like premature failure to me too as the other disc is fine. Had a look at their site and the warranty covers 1yr/10000 miles and you need a mechanics note with mileage and date on it as proof...bit hard as i did them myself 😆

Nice discs. Do you prefer the round ones to the wavy variant? are there any deal differences? (that you know of)
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 2 жыл бұрын
Not that I know of mate, many people have opinions on wavy discs, some say they chomp through pads quicker, but personally I have found the greatest improvement in braking efficiency to come from a well bleed set of steel hoses and copper sintered pads, regardless of the discs...

Good point, I was wondering about the missing bolts so much I did not think of that, it might be the same as the bolts, it might not matter either way. It would be interesting to check and find out for sure.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 6 жыл бұрын
Soody69, Hi mate.. it's generally practiced to static balance with the sprocket carrier off the wheel.... the reason being that it only sits pushed into the loose fitting rubbers.. and will not be held perfectly square to the wheel (to ensure it runs true) until the wheel is bolted into the bike... for "Dynamic Balancing" the assembly is bolted into a machine and spun at speed, so the carrier will be held true by the machine... but for 'Static Balancing', its fine to balance a wheel without the carrier fitted.. the sprocket is balanced during manufacture, so wont unbalance anything later..

Quick question on the thread lock, back in the day 1980/81 when you bought thread lock you were handed a small red bottle with a white top, happy days! Now there’s all sorts. High Strength, Medium Strength, Blue Removable, Vibration Resistant. WTF. Any recommendations would be appreciated. I’m thinking Loctite 2700 OEM High Strength. Look forward to your thoughts. Regards Michael
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, the high strength stuff is for permanent fasteners you never intend to remove... the best stuff for general use is the blue stuff in the red bottle with the white top - it's temporary, and removable, threadlock for things you'll remove often, like brake calipers, discs, etc.... Good to meet you too my friend, hope you're getting lots of use of the lift, was talking to someone just today who is going to be buying the same one... catch you in March, gonna be a little further distance for you, but will be a great ride a lot further this time and the ending cafe does great food and is a really cool place...!

Question about balancing the wheels. With an axle smaller than the opening, will it balance properly?
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 6 жыл бұрын
Personally I have always found that it does Daz, as long as the bearings turn freely, then the weight of the wheel holds it down and it should roll on its bearings..

Hi Gary.. thanks mate.. Ive had that Torque wrench for about 20 years.. its about time for a new one, but you know how it is, im always buying tools, and mostly things i dont yet have.. so buying a new version of something i already have is second on the list lol... But for what its worth, it's a Sykes Pickavant, no longer made, but there is a modern equivalent.. and i got it from Machine mart buddy.. Hope that helps.. Del.

Out of curiosity what torque did you use ? I know it varies from bike to bike it's just a guideline as my manual stated before was 105nm which is 5nm more than the axle nut which seemed a lot and when i phoned the dealer they said they couldn't tell me as if I used their torque and something broke a customer could try blaming them which is a bit daft as manual states to ask dealer if I need any info

They are used to absorb the energy that the chain generates on the rear wheel when you accelerate. If you imagine that they were metal instead of rubber one good twist of the throttle is likely to snap your chain. So they use then to cushion the impact that the chain has on the sprocket and the whole rear wheel. Hope this helps.

Hi buddy, they are called the Magic Tip Circlip Pliers from Wiha, and the best supplier for them is these guys: www.reconelectrical.co.uk/tools They don't list them on their website at the moment, but they can get any Wiha tools you like, and at a lot less money than buying direct from Wiha... just call them up, tell them what you want and they'll order them in for you... they do several options, inside and outside circlips, and bent head as well... hope that helps - let us know how you get on !

Hiya moonfleet. Ever heard that you can drill then tap a rear brake caliper to the chain adjuster through the swing arm to still allow it to move and also to secure the carrier and rear caliper to make changing rear easier? (I'm sure I saw this on a Race bike video??)

Getting there. Just one tiny thing that would annoy an ocd nut like me, you didn't line up the two front discs with each other, there's 5 mounting holes and 6 pairs of spokes on the carrier so the disc will sit differently depending how you rotate it if that makes sense, yes I know they'll work the same but I thought I'd mention it cos I have nothing else to do right now! One thing you've never mentioned is the ram air, I'm building a thundercat fighter half naked thing just now and they don't run well at high speed with the ram air removed , saw an air box mod on a web site and did what I reason is a better mod and it runs great I just wondered if there's similar issues on the zx7?

Andrew Bowie.. You're right buddy, its one hole out if that was a bother, or a requirement.. its just looks i guess. wasn't really that bothered tbh, i guess you are a bit more OCD than me..lol With the Ramair, i read a lot about it when i first got the bike, and apparently the 750 doesn't rely so much on airbox pressure as the 600's do. so im thinking i wont lose as much as you did.. i have made those inlet ducts to face forward and catch a good proportion of the incoming air and still retain some performance.. but i wont know until i get it all done and out for a ride.. then i can deal with it.. Thanks for the heads-up buddy.. take care. Del.

They are just a top quality made product, not the only good quality brakes but they look great. Paired with some top quality pads, maybe some braided lines and you will have amazing braking strength and feel.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 6 жыл бұрын
Like Halfdead Rider said Samuel, they are top quality brakes, and used with their own Copper Sintered HH pads they will increase braking force purely due to greater friction..ive used them many times and they give you better feel and feedback, you need a much lighter squeeze on the lever to scrub speed off.. and they never corrode.!

I Iain, it's exactly like the name says, "Cush Drive".. it 'cushions' the 'drive' take-up by placing rubber blocks between the mating faces inside the sprocket carrier... this absorbs shock and vibration that not only makes for a smoother ride, but also make the bearings in the gearbox last longer...

The problem is, you're balancing the wheels only static, but not dynamic. Sure better than unbalanced wheels, but they still might tumble, if you don't balance them dynamic. But you can do that only with the right machines...

This is not the way to balance your wheels. if you are going to try and do it yourself the shaft you put through the wheel needs to fit the bearing snugly (use cones) not like the one in the video. This video explains how to balance a wheel kzbin.info/www/bejne/eZ_Od5qgfp52rtE
