Just a little tip, when using heat I'm sure it's better to heat just the nut in this instance. This will expand the nut off the thread making removal easier. Also, using penetrating oil is just cooling them down, which surely negates the use of heat..?

Having spent about 30-odd years fixing and servicing my own bikes, I'm all too familiar with the heartache and joys involved in fasteners and plastic things that go SNAP! This poor bike really has had a harsh life, and great that you'e giving it a new fresh start. I'm really pleased that you're spending the time to video all this step by step stuff, to show the unknowing what it's like in the real world, rather than the glorified American shows on TV that make everything look so easy. Can't wait to see how this pans out, should be very interesting, and an absolute beast when it's done!

Hey mate just a quick tip(I own 9 antique motorcycle... lots of headaches!) Anytime you have an exposed rusty stud with a nut you need to remove give them a good soak in PO and put a little wire wheel on your rotary tool and knock that rust off first before even trying to move them and then soak them again and they should come right off. del, i'd suggest in investing in a set of 3/8ths drive hex and torx drivers (ideally an impact rated set), using a ball end hex t-handle in a corroded or very tight fastener is a certain recipie for a headache especially with something that looks like its been at the bottom of a canal for a decade. get the right size, clean out the head of the fastener best you can with a pick and hammer the driver into the fastener. then stick an impact on it, it'll come right out. even one of those impact screwdriver things you smack with a hammer will do the job to crack it loose.

Not sure if it was visible, but these aren't ball heads, these t-bar allen wrenches are straight sided, I think we all know the ball headed version is for after you've cracked it loose and you just want spinning access... I do have a full range of socket mounted keys and torx, but not impact rated ones, there's always a tool list aye mate?! Thanks for your insight..

A good scrub with a wire brush would help shift a lot of the stud rust, allowing the nut to come off easier 👍

Hi mate, in some ways, they stop you over doing it, I know what you mean abut leverage, but the bolt head can only take so much, as i found with the exhaust ports, I do have socket mounted allen keys and torx bits, it's just too easy to reach for a t-bar I guess!

Lube & heat repeat, repeat - worked a treat. Blanking plates - cut the flanges off the OEM pipework and just weld over the hole in the middle. Perfect size & made for the job. Keep up the good work and getting nuts off 1 flat at a time, been there too many times :)

Hey Del another great vid..i know its only removing bolts ..but its removing bolts without pnematic tools and showing everyone this is probally worse case scenario of what you'll face and these are a few ways to improvise , adaot and overcome....you stay so calm at times i would have reached for "big hammer" Great job mate kerp the vids coming

Yeah love it, it's not just weight saving, it's junky corroded weight saving. I found on a couple of bikes that removing the secondary air injection smoothed the throttle out at low speed and revs i.e. through town.

Always found a few hits hit w a nut socket and/or an extension and a hammer this loses the rust bond in tread, and then pennetreting oil and leave overnight.. If that don't help fire upp engine and get it warm then try again.. Beats drilling out and helicoiling engine..

I remember when I had my little Chinese HN125 I removed the same unit but only had one port to block. I used a beer can lol, double thickness it was strong enough to blank off the hole and was very cheap. Well done with the rusty nuts looks like the penetrating lubricant did the job :)

Great videos! You inspired me to do stuff myself. And this winter I did engine refresh on my track bike and (even I was surprised) it runs and did a track day! successfully! Woohoo! I absolutely have to chip in on the two bolts on the crank. Do remove them! It's absolutely safe. I'll explain why. The Two halves area sealed with silicon, and squeezed tight by a good 20+ bolts. If you remove two nothing will happen. Let me explain where then number of bolts come from and the gasket. Bolts main aim is to take load from the bearings of crankshaft and gearbox. Those are monstrous. The two mating surfaces are machine to perfection and silicon does amazing job at sealing the oil inside it. That's it on gasket. Now The bolt pattern is mainly for factory and rebuilds because when the two halves put together bolt tightening sequence will guarantee that you will bed them perfectly together. That's it. If you now remove two bolts nothing will happen. Can't run the engine without them but your crank is already in one piece and sealed. I personally would to get rid of that bracket. Have you got a set of metrinch spanners and sockets? They are great for those slightly rounded nuts and bolts as they are designed to work on the flat and not the point. 6 point sockets and spanners are the next best when dealing with stubborn nuts and bolts.

No Sir, I don't have any, they are cool, I do have a range of different sockets, the Sealey lock-on sockets are really useful, and the Snap-On sockets I have work on a similar principle to metrinch by driving more on the flats... we always need more tools aye?!

You could always use the original air pipe flanges that meet the block , cut the pipes off flush and weld up the center holes since they are the right size or you could use as templates to makes some then wouldnt cost a penny :D

If the hose flanges are steel. Clean them up to bare metal and simply weld the holes for the pipes and refit :) aslong as air tight won’t have adverse effects, many do this on the bmw s1000rr/Gsxr 1000’s/ Daytona 675s utilise the old plates instead of paying from USA for block off plates

just a quick question on cam chain - can it be removed by simply lifting off top sprockets and dropping down tunnel( then replaced by same method? and also, does head need to come off to replace rear chain guide or does it locate with a peg and bottom bolt? ta very much

Hi Charles, yes, i took your advice on closer inspection those pipes were pretty badly corroded and the actual main unit lower down was all seized up with rust and filth.. so it was no more then dead weight.. and i was just being a wimp not wanting to attack those rusted nits.... but as always, out the other side of the job, you feel epic... Del, you are going to clean up that frontal area of the engine, some degreaser on the underside of the crankcase and around the filter, get rid of the corroded look, make it all look smart again, maybe some paint and lacquer especially if you are fitting a new exhaust header and pipes? I threaded the holes when i removed the pairs from my Vtwin. Stuck a bolt in them, but mine is a £500 commuter LOL, it stopped it back firing anyway!

The "air intake" pipes (or EGR valve) i always have removed them if i see them on any bike as they just silly emissions crap as you said and bedsides am sure there some performance boost to it carb meant to handle air and fuel not some piped thing lol cold air injected into a hot cylinder can never be good

Nice work Del. I'd like to think I'd have that much patience, but in reality about 5 mins in to the job I'd loose my rag and be snapping studs at an alarming rate! Might try to get hold of some of that penetrating fluid, as the Divvy is reluctant to give up many of its fasteners.

I use Aerokroil here is the USA I’m a union electrician and work on bridges replacing electric motors on draw bridge the saltwater is very hard on hardware even stainless rust Aerokroil works very good but is bad for electrical insulation wires and tool handles soften them up and some plastic too

Cut pipes off old brackets, file surface flat and then weld plate over holes, jobs a good-un.
