Hi Del, great videos mate, I am planning to remove my Triumph thunderbird sport forks, just to repaint outer tubes.... Just bought bike and noticed the salt has had a go at the lacquer.. However, your video alerted me to the fact that the forks actually go through sliders for headlamp and that grommets live, and die therein... I casually searched ebay on the off-chance that some may be available, after you'd said no chance of finding any..... I found four brand new for £15.00!! Big thanks for highlighting the need, I looked at mine and can see they are cracked, so Thanks again.. Brilliant..

Hi Steve. Most welcome mate, those shrouds at the top are pretty subtle aye, you hardly notice them from 10 feet away.. im glad you found some, there are, it seems a few companies out there answering the need and turning them out for realistic money.. Good luck with your project mate, don;t you love that 5 minute clearcoat they cover the forks with... once you've painted them they'll last for years then.. ! have a good weekend mate. Del.

Always nice to see these refurbish projects coming along. I've done the same on a couple bikes now, but other than cleaning up the internals and putting them back in... Is there anything I should be looking for as far as wear inside? The bushings, or damper rods...? Thanks Del
@Moonfleet414 жыл бұрын
Hi Graeme, if you look at the gold coloured ring I took off, that's the top bushing and there's another larger one at the bottom of the stanchion, you can replace those if they're scored or worn, and they are designed to be softer than the inside of the slider that they rub against, so they will take the hit... you can put emulators in the bottom of the forks, they are like a small contraption to improve damping, you can fit progressive springs if you don't have them, and if you want to really wring the last ounce of performance out of a regular fork, you could fit Hyperpro silicone seals... and that's about the most you'll do short of titanium nitride coating your stanchions... but seriously mate, new seals, fresh oil and healthy bushings will at least return you to factory spec and that should be good enough, unless you want to upgrade things.
@graemelogan12144 жыл бұрын
@@Moonfleet41 Thanks Del. I've never really had a look at the bushings, and just stuck them back in. There's definitely something feeling a bit lose over bumps right now, and the headstock is fine. I'll have a look.

@Moonfleet414 жыл бұрын
You used the term 'straight away' and that's how I took your question mate, but all things corrode over time and short of replacing everything with marine grade stainless, there's nothing you can do, just maintenance and regular cleaning... and for what it's worth, much of what I wheeled off was dirt, specially on the dome nuts as they were stainless, just filthy after 20yrs!

I like the black fork bottoms, but they may not fit every bike. If you wanted to get BACK that silvery, shiny, almost OEM look, would you use a more metallic glossy paint? Clear finish? Have you tried this before, and on what bike? Thanks DEL & PENNY!
@Moonfleet414 жыл бұрын
I never bother polishing or lacquering fork leg sliders, i just paint them in a tough black finish as they get so much punishment from road grit and salt, any bling finish is gone in a season and a waste of time, if you want silver, then you can buy tough paint in silver, which would give you the look you want if you don't like black.

Nice job, Shame they don't do silver, that blasted finish looked fab, could you lacquer that? It is awesome paint mind, I flatted and then polished back my tank after painting it with tough paint and it was like a mirror after!
@Moonfleet414 жыл бұрын
Yes ate, you could clear coat that blasted finish, it'd be pretty cool, but I've always doubted the integrity of clear-coat straigh on to metal, you saw what became of the factory version, so it's hardly gonna last if you did it again, it's always a finite finish, but I do plan for the wheels to be naked polished alloy, which you can either have fun polishing by hand or clean with a Scotchbrite for a satin finish... in my view, to leave it bare is actually better than to clear-coat it... at least you can maintain it yourself!

No mate, it would take up 1/4 of the garage space, I could never film in there as it wouldn't only be too cramped but also the dust fog would ruin any filming and quite probably the camera, I invested with this garage set up in 3 large extractors and with the door open I clear the entire space within 10mins and it's no big shakes to chuck a sheet over the bike and the machines... but the biggest reason I don't need it is that 3 doors down from me is a pro- paint shop as I'll be using for the final paint job on the Triumph coming soon!
